May’s Books of the Week

I suppose I should share May’s Books of the Week before we get into July!  It’s just been that kind of month.  We can’t keep all of the spinning plates in the air all the time, right? It’s been great to dig into projects, though, and it’s okay that it’s distracted me a little. So, here are my picks for May… I purchased this book when it first came out and it is absolutely fantastic for those interested in oil or acrylic painting.  I bet it covers more material than you would get in a college class.  It is so thorough, yet approachable. It’s not just filled with information, but step-by-step demonstrations that show a variety of classical techniques. Yes, art has a strong artistic component (hence the name), but it is also highly technical.  If you learn and study the techniques your skill as an artist will improve. It

for the love of old books & burning Charlotte Brontë

I shared yesterday in my Instagram stories that I know the stress that comes with shopping a popular online sale.  I have been on the buying end of that scenario. Just a few weeks ago, I was watching an Instagram account I follow, @sketchbookcoshop, give previews of their upcoming sale.  They make sketchbooks out of antique and vintage books, so each of their pieces is one-of-a-kind.  One, in particular, caught my fancy, so I sent a message to them.  “Can I purchase this one?” “Sorry, you have to wait for the sale.” I’ve said those very words to many people as I was getting ready for Lucketts Spring Markets.  I always struggled with the tension of making an immediate sale vs. saving the inventory for people who were paying to attend the event.  And do I offer holds for people shopping on the VIP day?  How and when do I

project progress & more happy mail…

The tail end of last week and the weekend were again filled with projects around the home and yard.  I did take time to rest and relax, too, but I want to keep things moving when I’m on a roll.  I can see the finish line on a few of the projects I’m bouncing between and I’m ready to get them checked off my list. So, this weekend, I spent some more time painting the trim we installed a couple of weeks ago.  I finished the caulking, priming, and painting in the master bedroom on Saturday and it looks so good!  I’ll share the final results soon. I also got a coat of primer and the first coat of paint on two walls in the sewing room, including the wall with the windows.  Painting window casings is such a pain, so I’m glad to just have one more coat to

the antique french paint box

One of the things on my shopping wish-list when I went to Europe last fall was a paint box.  Most of the items on my list were, in fact, art supplies…  a silver ink well, a blotter, a tabletop easel, a fountain pen.  As you may have noticed, antique and vintage art supplies have been a favorite of mine lately!  I was really hoping to find a wooden artist’s pochade box in France or Italy, and I did come across a couple, but just not the right one.  I almost talked myself into buying one particular box, but it really was too new.  It didn’t have the soul and patina I wanted. So, I’ve been browsing Etsy and eBay now and then for antique and vintage pochade boxes.  I’ve gotten so far as to put one in my cart only to abandon it.  After all of my years of buying

April’s Books of the Week

I must pat myself on the back for picking some great books in the month of April!  I feel like I can say that because I just picked them off of a shelf, read them, enjoyed them, and I’m sharing them with you. The Art of Beatrix Potter I enjoyed this book on a few different levels.  First off, I liked learning more about Beatrix Potter as a writer, artist, and creative.  This book is part biography with family photos and details about her childhood and how her stories and art began and evolved. I also enjoyed this book as a subject to study as an artist.  There are so many delightful sketches and watercolor paintings, as you would imagine.  I always learn so much from studying other artists.  I feel overwhelmed at the idea of sketching a street scene, but I can learn how to do it by making

March’s Books of the Week

Welp, it’s April 23 and we’re just now getting to March’s books of the week.  That’s just how things have been going lately.  I have definitely put too much self-imposed pressure on myself in a variety of areas and it’s starting to compound.  I know other over-achievers will sympathize.  You know you’re doing fine, but every little thing that slips through the cracks or gets done a little later than desired starts makes you feel like you’re not doing enough.  It’s completely unfair to ourselves and completely ignores the numerous things you’re doing right and well, but it’s a cycle that’s hard to break nonetheless.  Especially when busyness is a kind of sanctuary during stressful times. So, I’m typing it out in the hopes that acknowledgment works as a kind of antidote.  And I’m sharing it in the hopes that others who are feeling the same way will find safety

happy mail

Over the last couple of weeks, I received a few surprises in the mail from a few of my artist/maker friends.  Happy Mail has a whole new meaning now.  Everything that’s delivered is a thread connecting us to someone else…  someone who made something, packed something, delivered something.  When it’s just us at home, everything that comes in seems precious; a bright spot.  I think each of these packages would have felt like that even under the best of times, but in this time of isolation, they made me pause and appreciate thoughtfulness and connection. When I opened my mailbox a few days ago, the scent of lavender wafted out.  Right away, it made me smile.  It’s my favorite scent and I breathed it in deeply before pulling my mail out into a plastic grocery bag to minimize touching it.  When I opened my mail later the next day (we’ve

the best gift

Saturday was my 42 birthday.  It started off with apologies from Jeff and the boys that they couldn’t go out and buy me gifts and couldn’t take me out to a restaurant.  It would be another day hunkering down at home.  The fact that I wasn’t disappointed was surprising to me.  I’ve always been a “big birthday person.”  I love presents and cake and surprises. To plan for the day, I bought the ingredients to make a copycat version of Olive Garden’s lemon cream cake, but there have been bigger things than online shopping for potential birthday presents to occupy my time and thoughts.  We would just unceremoniously move some cash from the gifts line item to my personal spending money in our budget and I could buy something later. It was actually the precautions we’ve been taking to keep our family, particularly our type 1 diabetic son, insulated from
