the Christmas victrola

A few of you noticed my early Christmas present in the Holiday Home Tour I shared a couple of weeks ago.  If you were with me when I lived back in PA, you may remember that I owned a Victrola.  I bought it in a lot of furniture.  It was thrown in as a freebie, but it was the piece I was most excited about.  The cabinet was in poor condition, but the Victrola worked and I enjoyed it so much.  I would play records on it now and then, although it’s a bit impractical to play one song at a time when compared to an infinite playlist on an iPhone.  When we moved to MN, I decided to let it go.  I just didn’t see a 100+-year-old Victrola really working aesthetically in a typical suburban home. Over the 4+ years we’ve lived here though, I have found myself browsing

october – december 2021 favorites

I’ve had the “October 2021 Favorites” post sitting in my drafts for weeks!  I knew time was ticking to get Christmas content out, so I kept pushing this post off in favor of sharing posts about Christmas decorating and crafts.  But, I have some great favorites to share, so I thought I would combine all of my favorites from October through the end of the year into one final 2021 favorites post.  Maybe you’ll get some ideas for last-minute Christmas presents or how you want to spend any gift cards you receive.  Favorites are just always a fun thing to share, so here they are… feels like home Of course, the Feels Like Home book launch! It was a culmination of a lot of work and a very exciting time.  I am so proud of this book and it felt good to launch it into the world.  Thank you for

a few favorite affordable fountain pens

As I’ve been sharing some of my fountain pens on Instagram and here on the blog, I’ve received some messages asking for recommendations for affordable fountain pens for fountain-pen-beginners or for those who don’t want to spend a lot on a pen.  When I bought my first “real” fountain pen a few years ago with my birthday money, several people warned me that I had just opened a door into a whole new (addictive) world.  Several fountain pens later and I see they are right.  I’ve said before that I’m not into designer shoes and purses, but give me a pair of Crocs and nice writing/art supplies and I’m set. When I was in a fountain pen shop in Paris a couple of years ago, buying a 1920s fountain pen as a souvenir, an older gentleman was buying a young woman a €900 fountain pen.  Wendy, who was translating for

small business saturday | small shops & big sales

I’ve never been a big Black Friday shopper.  I went out to do some Black Friday shopping one year just to experience it and I waited in a line that wrapped around the store to buy a Playdough set.  When I got to the checkout, the woman ringing it up asked me, “Is this it?”  “Yep.  That’s it.”  And that was it.  We went home and I haven’t gone since.  I might buy a few things online if I see a special sale, but I’d rather hit a local antique store or cruise around on Etsy to eBay for goodies.  So, instead of sharing Black Friday deals today, I’m going to get you geared up for Small Business Saturday by sharing some of my favorite small shops.  Several are offering coupon codes through the weekend for my readers or they are already running special sales, so make sure you write

a day in stillwater, mn

For a few weeks now, Jeff has been trying to get me to go on a day trip.  As someone who is a natural homebody, the pandemic, lockdowns, and busyness have all made it easier to become even more of a homebody.  And I recognize that isn’t necessarily a good thing.  So, when some of our friends shared about the oldest town in Minnesota, Stillwater, Jeff decided we needed to do a day trip there before winter set in.  He has Mondays off, so he picked yesterday to whisk me away.  I packed a small bag with some sketching supplies in case we just sat by the St. Croix river for a while, but our plan was to hit some of the local shops, grab lunch, and walk along the river. It was the perfect day weather-wise.  Clear and sunny, warm, but with a crisp fall chill in the air.

August & September 2021 Favorites

I don’t know about you, but August and September were a blur!  Well, not quite a blur, but I realized I hadn’t done a favorites post for August about halfway through September and then I could hardly remember my favorites from August.  So, I decided to put them together in one post of late summer favorites and there are some really good ones… (This post contains affiliate links.) little boy Jeff told me a long time ago that I would love the movie and should watch it and, for some reason, I just dragged my feet on it.  I have no idea why.  We finally watched it in September and he was absolutely right.  I loved this movie.  It was more than enjoyable…it was touching, beautiful, funny, powerful, and moving.  It covers themes like innocent faith, unwavering love, and learning to know and love people as individuals instead of judging

making a beautiful, comfortable bed with brooklinen

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Brooklinen.  As always, all words and opinions are honest and my own. Use promo code MUSTARDSEED to get $20 off your Brooklinen order of over $100. I was having a conversation with one of my good friends a couple of weeks ago and she shared that she just bought all new bedding.  It was a splurge, a deliberate investment in herself and her sleep after a particularly trying couple of years.  When I got off the phone with her, I thought, good for you.  We often overlook pampering ourselves by making sure our bed is comfortable and inviting. I’ve learned the value of good bedding over the past few years and it’s become a non-negotiable to me.  It goes beyond decorating and aesthetics because sleep is so vital to our physical and mental health, our mood, productivity, and creativity.  We spend 1/3 of our

“random miscellaneous company”

“Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.  Besides, in this random miscellaneous company we may rub against some complete stranger who will, with luck, turn into the best friend we have in the world.” ― Virginia Woolf Just as I love antiques and vintage things, I love used books, too.  I love new books and will buy those when they are new releases, but if the book has been around for a while, I always look into purchasing it used first.  Not only does it save a lot of money, but I’m getting a book that has a little story to it.  Sometimes, that story remains a secret, but other times, I can see who the book belonged to, what library it came from, who checked it out, or
