Running a Business

one of the secrets to great photography

The clock ticked past 9:00 tonight and I still had no idea what I was going to post about.  It was one of those days when I work on things that are very uninteresting.  I primed the baseboard heaters in my family room and the under side of my kitchen cabinets.  Bo-ring.  I was about ready to get my camera out and snap a “before” picture of my heaters, but that seemed a little silly…even in the blog world.  I have finished three pieces of furniture, but I have to lug them into the house for their “beauty shots” and that just wasn’t going to happen today.  So, here I am…late into the evening and dry on material.  I started looking through my old photographs for some inspiration.  As I scrolled through some I took over a year ago, it hit me.  I knew what I wanted to post about.

watermarks & actions

Last week I posted about my camera and lenses and this is the follow-up post about watermarks and actions that I promised.  Let me preface this by saying I am not a PSE (Photoshop Elements) expert and there are a lot of other great programs out there, this is just what I use.  If you use a free program or prefer another software, that’s totally OK.  Just use what works for you.  There are a couple of ways to watermark a photo.  Before my designer made a graphic for me, I just used a text box and added text over the picture.  This is a great homemade solution if you don’t know how to make a graphic (which I didn’t) or don’t have the money to hire someone to make one for you.    Laura made four graphics for me to use for watermarking.  The one above in white is what I

Lucketts

My space at The Old Lucketts Store is a big part of my business, so I have to share what it looks like every now and then, especially since it’s constantly changing.  Here’s how it looked last Thursday… I sold five furniture pieces over the past couple of days, so it doesn’t look like this anymore.  I guess that means some furniture painting and shopping is in order…

my camera & lenses

You can find an updated post (written in 2022) HERE about my camera, lenses, and other gear. I get a lot of questions about what camera and lenses I use as well as how I process my pictures.  I received a bunch last week, so I thought it was time to share it all in a post.  Well, a few posts.  This post is about what gear I use. My camera body is a Nikon D7000 digital SLR.  This picture is from Gear Patrol, because it’s hard to take a picture of your own camera when that is the only camera in the house.  I could’ve done the “mirror shot, but I’m not exactly photo-ready today.  So, anyway, there she is… You can whistle at her.  It’s okay. I really love this camera.  The body is around $1200 (without a lens), so it’s definitely expensive if you’re just starting out.

the mural that started it all

I am such a bad blogger.  I’ve been so busy on other things that I forgot to announce the winners of Miss Mustard Seed’s Wuslu Pick of the Month (the small pedestal with glass cloche)    The winners are… Miss Kitty of Miss Kopy Kat DeeGeeRN and Melanie, anonymous, but left an e-mail.  Congratulations!  Yasmin from Wuslu will be contacting you about your prize. About 3 1/2 years ago my friend, Laura Dreyer (who also painted Adele for me), came over to my house to help me out with a project.  I wanted to paint a mural in my son’s nursery.  After looking through children’s books for a few months, I settled on a page from Guess How Much I Love You.  It’s a beautiful story with illustrations that are perfect for a mural.  So, we took an afternoon and she painted the hares and I painted the scenery.  As we

a closer look at Lucketts

One of my readers left a comment last week asking to see some more of Lucketts.  Here I am, selfishly snapping away pictures of my own room when there are so other many amazing spaces to share.  Well, I’m going to remedy that right now. For those of you who don’t know what The Old Lucketts Store is, it’s a very old general store/boarding house that was converted into an antique store.  It is the highlight of the one stoplight town that’s a few miles north of Leesburg, VA on Rt 15 and it’s about an hour outside of Washington, DC.  It’s not a traditional antique mall.  It’s a collection of about 30 dealers, designers and artists that flows easily from one room to the next.  It is packed with inspiration and furniture and goodies and one-of-a-kind quirky finds.  Here are some pictures I snapped on Thursday… I know..right?  Amazing.

my favorite so far

I received several calls from The Lucketts Store last weekend.  It seems that everyone decided to buy furniture out of my room and it was practically cleaned out.  So, I had to work like crazy for a few days and then I went down on Thursday to get it all filled up.  Here’s what it looked like when I was done… The dining set is an antique that belonged to my grandfather, but no one in the family wanted it. I refinished the top and painted the base in a washed gray.  The chairs are upholstered in a grain sack from Poland.  I built the oversized chalk board for a Cottages and Bungalows tutorial.  Look for that issue soon.  I found a huge ironstone set at an antique mall last week, so I used it to set the table.  Antique strawberry baskets are filled with bagged lavender buds and a starfish
