Market on Chapel Hill

Well, I am in serious need of an epsom salt bath, but Kriste and I got the trailer all packed up today and we’re ready to head to Alabama for The Market on Chapel Hill this Saturday (October 3, 2015).  Just to clarify, it’s in Pike Road, Alabama, NOT Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  It’s called “The Market on Chapel Hill”, because the market is in and around a chapel/meeting house on a hill. We stay in the Chapel Loft, which is just a stone’s throw from the chapel on the hill.  I took this picture from the door, the morning of the market last year. Anyway, I am really excited about my space this year.  It’s my third year selling at this market and I feel like I’m bringing really special pieces this time.  I was very particular when I was shopping, more than usual, and tried to find pieces

creative space

This week has been “one of those weeks.”  Not a bad week.  Just a very busy week and things kept getting shuffled around…a doctor’s appointment I forgot about, a kid home from school, cancelled and rescheduled meetings.  Too much to do, not enough time, not enough sleep.  I realized on Wednesday night that I hadn’t eaten a meal all day.  I had just grazed on apples and cheese and crackers.  And, by the time I realized it, I was too tired to do anything about it. I know so many of you can relate…busy families, demanding careers, full calendars. I find, that on the weeks that are really packed, I have trouble finding the time, the space, to be creative.  Words don’t flow as easily when I’m writing.  Ideas stall.  Apathy creeps in.  Everything is more of a struggle than it was last week, when I felt fresh and inspired

How my business began | part 6 | when it takes off

The last two installments of this series sort of overlapped.  In part 5, I shared about starting this blog.  In part 4, we left off where the consignment store I sold out of was closing its doors. That’s where we’ll pick up the story. This was the time in my business when it was really scary.  I had become comfortable with what my business had become in two years and I just imagined more of the same…selling out of a local shop, nurturing my growing blog, listing items in an Etsy shop here and there.  It was simple and safe. Then things got uncomfortable. The doors of the shop were closing.  Along with that, the door to my biggest source of income was closing, too.  I remember that sense of panic bubbling up.  We weren’t living off my income by any stretch.  It was still very humble, but it helped with

how my business began | part 5 | the blog

In the last installment of “how my business began” I glossed over when I started my blog.  Starting the blog was like pushing over a domino, starting a chain reaction that has brought me to where I am today.  It deserves more than a gloss over, so we’re going to take a few steps back in the story and I’m going to share the details. First off, I didn’t have a high opinion of blogs. Or bloggers. Bloggers to me were guys in their basement, ranting about sports or politics.  Talking about something they were, most likely, not qualified to talk about, but they felt so opinionated about the subject, they had to share it with the world.  (“The world” in this case, being their eight buddies who read their blog.) And they were usually in their underwear when they wrote their blog, eating Cheetos. I know I was not the only one

how my business began | part 4 | finding my niche

My business was only a few weeks old and, after a craft show failure, I found a shop willing to sell my hand-painted ornaments and, even more exciting than that, the owner was willing to accept my painted furniture and antiques on consignment. It was the first opportunity I had at a somewhat steady income stream. I decided to take the “shotgun approach” and scoured my house for anything and everything that someone might want to buy.  I had a lot of things found over the years at yard sales, antique stores, thrift stores, my Opa’s attic, and a few things that were passed along to me for free as well.  It was time to turn all of that squirreled-away stuff into much-needed cash. In addition to scrounging for things I could tag and put right into the store, I painted a few pieces of furniture that had been hanging out

business, blogging & balance

In a recent comment, Cami made a request. “I for one, would love to hear you talk about balancing a blogging career with kids and family.  I’m just getting mine rolling and I feel so overwhelmed at times.  You’ve been going at this longer and I would love to hear your ups and downs and ways to manage it all.  Balance.  The great juggling act of life! 😉  Thanks for all your words!” Oh, Cami.  You’re asking the blind to lead the blind.  Everyone who knows me even a little bit, knows that I struggle with balance. I struggle. I can manage okay when our routine is in motion, but when it’s off, because of a snow day, vacation, sickness, whatever, all of the balls I’ve managed to keep airborne, awkwardly at times, come falling down.  And it’s not the funny, slapstick routine where the balls fall down and the clown spastically tries to catch

how my business began | part 3 | now I’m an entrepreneur…

As far as degrees go, I probably have one of the most useless degrees when it comes to preparation for the business world. I have a degree in Musical Theatre. My class schedule sort of looked like Fame.  I went from tap to private voice lessons to costume design to acting.  My backpack was filled with ballet shoes, leg warmers, scripts, and a music binder. When I decided on that degree, it was not because I wanted to prepare myself for starting a business.  It was because I loved theatre and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. When I started my business, it wasn’t because I thought I had the right credentials, background or degree or even a solid plan.  It was because I felt compelled to.  I needed to.  (Try explaining all of this to a guy in a suit when you need to get liability insurance!) So I didn’t have

how my business began | part 2 | the name

If you missed part 1, read that first HERE. …so, I had made the decision to join the ranks of the “mom-prenuers.”  My mind was fixed on it and I felt a strong pull in that direction. (Jeff said that he will write a post sharing his perspective of things, but for now, I’ll say that he was supportive of me, but he didn’t think it would work at all.  Of course, he didn’t say that at the time.  He gave me the go-get-em-hon attitude and let me pursue it.) The first thing I needed was a name. I wanted a name that was meaningful, memorable, unique and not restrictive.  Some of the names that were kicked around among my friends and family… MVP Designs (for my initials, but I thought it sounded like a sports-themed business) Seldom Scene Creations (my dad’s idea, mainly for murals) Widow’s Mite Designs (Another biblical reference.
