The Wonders of Grout

I actually had to dig this photo out of my computer’s recycle bin. I was embarrassed at the gaps and, while I had faith in grout and caulk, I wasn’t eager to share the full frontal shot of my first tile job.  So, instead I showed shots where my imperfections weren’t so in-your-face. Well, here’s what that same wall looks like after it has been grouted.  (I still need to caulk around the edges.) Amazing, right?!  I was a little nervous that I had too much faith in caulk and grout, but it exceeded my expectations in making my amateur tile job look great. Here are some things I learned in my inaugural grout-applying project.  1.) Grouting is a not-fun job.  When I looked longingly at the bucket of grout on my counter before my trip to Arkansas, I imagined I would smooth the grout over the tiles in one swoop, sponge the excess

Living in Upheaval

I only have a small idea of what it’s like to live through a kitchen renovation, but I know enough to know that it’s pretty disruptive to a household.  One of my dear friends had to gut her entire kitchen (down to the studs and floor joists!)  I remember her balancing across the joists with a platter of sliced watermelon to feed volunteers who came to help with the kitchen project.  That woman fed a family of six with a microwave, griddle and crock pot for weeks.  Amazing. Replacing my back splash, counters, sink, faucet and range hood pales in comparison to the upheaval they went through.  Even so, I want to keep things as normal as possible and restrict the number of days I have to wash dishes in the bathroom sink. Here’s the way we’re making the changes easier to live through… First off, we loosened the counters,

Installing the tile back splash

I woke up today, ready to get to work on the tile.  I had the tile saw (borrowed from a friend), the tile, the supplies and my dad lined up to help.  The morning was cold, but sunny.  So, I started to get everything set up and it started to sleet.  Okay.  No biggie.  We have to use the saw outside, but I’ll just set up a canopy tent.  By the time I gathered the saw horses and brought the canopy to the deck, it was like a blizzard outside.  Uh-uh.  I am tiling my back splash today and that is that.     My dad and I got a nice cozy setup on the deck and got started.  (Yes, that’s a kiddie pool on the deck that has one big ice cube in it.)  I got about 2/3 of the way through the project and realized I was woefully

my dirty little secrets

Picture this…I have very important dinner guests over to my house.  I welcome them into my kitchen. They compliment my bright white cabinetry.  I’m finishing some dinner prep and chatting with everyone, gracious hostess that I am.  Are you with me? One of the guests asks if she can do anything to help me.  I ask her to grab a bowl out of the upper right cabinet.  She sees this… ..she passes out.  Babies cry.  Children cover their eyes.  The fathers grab their families and leave in disgust. I’m left standing alone in my kitchen…in my disgrace. Okay, okay!  I’m guilty.  I didn’t paint the inside of my cabinets or cabinet doors.  I didn’t and I’m okay with it!  I’ll shout it from the roof tops and show it to the world on my blog!!  I DIDN’T PAINT THE INSIDE OF MY CABINETS OR DOORS!!!! In all seriousness, I was just too impatient (in case
