1970 home renovation

gifts from the garden

Between the rainy days, we’ve had some really lovely days and I’ve been getting out to do work in the garden to take advantage of them.  I’m excited about getting more work done in the house, but it’s just such a disaster right now (with the kitchen renovation happening) that I find myself either painting in the studio or working outside in the garden.  Both have been a nice retreat from the dust, noise, and clutter. The garden has also been a source of discovery and excitement as things are coming to life and revealing themselves.  Some hostas have popped up in the back along the neighbor’s fence and I added a few variegated ones that were given to me by a neighbor.  I was able to get this area weeded, planted, and mulched at a very small cost since most of the plants were free. I bought some lavender

power washing, windows, gardening, & tidying

Today I’m bringing you a cornucopia of all of the work we’ve been doing while the kitchen is underway.  I will say that having people at your house working hard, getting dirty, and making progress is a good motivator for me.  I’ve put in some hard work days since we’ve lived here, but I still feel like I’m recovering my strength and stamina from my time spent in the boot and keeping weight off my foot.  It’s amazing how much muscle I lost during that time and it’s taking me a while to get back to the point where I can do a full day of hard work and not feel totally sapped and achy by the end of it.  I’ve been pushing myself, though, and it’s starting to feel good when I’ve worked hard and I’m dirty and tired at the end of the day, but not completely destroyed.

favorite things | concrete garden accessories

Most of the things I love as an adult can be traced somewhere back to my childhood.  Such is the case with concrete garden accessories.  My Oma and Opa had concrete planters, a bird bath, and a bench in their yard in both of the houses they lived in when I was growing up.  And most of those pieces were passed down from their parents.  I remember sitting in the grass and using that bench as a counter for all sorts of creative outdoor activities.  I would make mud cakes to serve at an imaginary restaurant and line up small stones to make patterns.  I didn’t need much to entertain myself! When we cleaned out my Opa’s house after he passed away, I really wanted to take the bench and birdbath, but they were just too heavy and my van was already loaded.  We left them with the house, but

1970 home renovation | yard clean-up day two

A couple of weeks ago, we started working on cleaning up the yard.  (You can read about that HERE.)  As I’ve shared before, we have a great yard with some beautiful mature trees and bushes, but much of it has gotten a little overgrown and wild.  In some cases, I just have a different vision for the yard and would like a fresh start to put in the bushes and plants that I love or simply give the house a little more breathing room.  While I do hope to do some planting this year to get some of the structures of the landscaping in place, I think the bulk of the work on the exterior of the house this season is going to be clean-up.  This is sort of the demo part of the renovation.  We need to peel back the layers, clean things up, get a fresh coat of

yard clean-up begins

One of the things I love about this house and this neighborhood is the mature landscaping.  There are no scrawny saplings or yards covered only by a patchwork of newly-laid sod.  Everything is established and adds to the charm and beauty of this neighborhood.  For that reason, I was hesitant to start cutting down trees and ripping out bushes, but after being in the house for a few months, I needed to acknowledge that much of the landscaping would need to be removed or heavily cut back.  Bushes had grown together and several were way too close to the house.  The maple trees were in desperate need of thinning and a few of the small dogwoods were struggling in their shadow.  One dogwood had been completely choked out by a thick hedge of overgrown, woody bushes, leaving a tangled mess around a dead tree.  You could see that it was

new exterior lights | 1970 home renovation

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Lamps Plus.  As always, all words and opinions expressed in this post are honest and my own. If you missed the post a couple of weeks ago, I shared the new lights from Lamps Plus we installed in our hallway.  You can find that post HERE.  As a recap, we swapped dated, single-bulb lights for THESE beautiful star-shaped lights with six bulbs each!  The difference was amazing.  You can never underestimate what good lighting can do for a space.  With that success under our belt, I was eager to change out the exterior light fixtures of our 1970s ranch house.  I know “original lighting” sounds charming, but these were builder-grade, cheap light fixtures that had lived a good, long life.  They no longer added to the beauty or charm appeal of the house but detracted from it. There were six of them to change,

faux boxwood topiaries

When we had the bushes removed from the front and the pine and holly trees removed, it made the house much more visible.  That is what we wanted, but now the things we need to work on (like power washing and painting) are a bit more prominent and the porch looks a little naked.  I stuck a couple of antique concrete planters (that belonged to my Oma) when we first moved in, but the porch definitely needed more.  The thing is, it’s a shallow porch, so furniture isn’t going to work.  It just needed some greenery to spruce it up. I had faux boxwood topiaries on the porch of our MN house, but with all of the weight in the planters, it seemed like it would be best not to move them and I ended up selling them with the house.  As soon as I saw this house, I envisioned

tree trimming | 1970 home renovation

As soon as we saw our soon-to-be house in the real estate listing, we knew that landscaping would be one of the projects.  We loved this house and the neighborhood because of the mature trees and landscaping, but some of the landscaping around our house is well overgrown.  We are planning on keeping a lot of it, but some of it needed to be removed because it was either too close to the house or it was beyond trimming. We received a mailer from a tree trimming company a few weeks ago and I decided to give them a call to get a quote on having the large pine tree removed that is in front of the garage.  (You can just see the edge of the branches on the right of the photo.)  We felt like we could remove the holly bush in front of the porch on our own,
