installing a flagpole

About a year ago, we lost our flagpole in a storm…it may have even been during Hurricane Sandy.   The flagpole bracket was plastic and a strong wind finally snapped it off.  With everything else going on, it wasn’t a priority to put up a new flagpole bracket, but finally, when it was 18 degrees outside, we decided to do it.  It’s one of those 10 minute projects that often gets put on the back burner, but it adds a lot of charm and curb appeal to a house. I bought a heavier-duty aluminum one from my local True Value. Jeff removed the old bracket with a drill… …and installed the new bracket in the same place.  Since he was drilling into solid wood, he didn’t have to use the wall anchors that came with the set.  The bracket was the same size as the old one, so he didn’t

Show Business | Part 1

As I’ve mentioned how I’m getting ready for the Luckett’s Spring Market, I’ve received several e-mails asking various questions about my process, so I thought I would share the answers with “the group” in the way of a series.  I think we’re overdo for some information-heavy posts, anyway!  So, here we go… If you’re happily selling in an antique mall, on Etsy, eBay or maybe just occasionally at tag sales or you have a stash you’ve told your husband will become a business…at some point…you might wonder why you should try being a vendor at a fair. What is the advantage of being a vendor at an antique fair and is it worth hauling your stuff to an event?  I’m going to give you a very muddy answer.  It depends on the type of vendor you are.  If you’re really a collector who needs an overflow, so you have an

Here comes Lucketts…

I know it’s just the first day of March, but my sights are already set on the Lucketts Antique Market.  It’s historically been my biggest event of the year.  And every year I try to top the previous year…in the pieces I bring, the way things are set up, the planning and prep that goes into two days. Last year, I felt a little off.  It was still an amazing sale, but it rained and I didn’t have enough time to set up the booth the way I wanted to.  I remember shoppers running towards my booth when they opened the gates early and I was still frantically unpacking boxes, crying out, “I’m not ready, yet!”  Well, I just had to relax and let it be…rain, big blue tarp, frizzy hair, damp shoes, unfinished booth and all. If you didn’t see the photos from last year, Jeff photobombed about 85%

Painted Guest Room Bed |

Remember the guest bed I bought a few months ago?  My mom and I found it at an antique store for $100.  It needed a bit of gluing, but only on the decorative parts.  The bed is very solid…  …and I was totally in love with the curved footboard. Since 2002, I’ve been holding onto a magazine with a picture of this bed in it…  I’ve always wanted to replicate it if I ever found the right bed.  I knew I could paint the $100 bed in a similar fashion to finally have my own version of the bed in the magazine for my guest room. I started out by painting it in one coat of MMSMP French Enamel with the Bonding Agent added. Once the French Enamel was dry I started to add the other colors…Apron Strings, Mustard Seed Yellow and Linen. It was a little scary at first,

Master Bedroom

bathroomgallery

This past summer, we did a renovation of our master bathroom.  You can see the full details HERE.  The renovation was floor to ceiling. Here’s what it looked like before.   As you can see, it’s a small, regular bathroom.  It’s not one of these huge train-station-ish master bathrooms.  Since it’s not big, I wanted to make the most of the space and I wanted to pay attention to the details.  The ceiling was painted a creamy off-white, which would’ve looked grungy against all of the bright white in the new space. I went to my local True Value hardware and bought a can of bright white EasyCare ceiling paint. And I painted the ceiling before we installed the new tile, vanity, toilet, etc., so I wouldn’t have to worry about splatters, which just happens when you paint a ceiling. Warning – The process pictures in this post have terrible

Mystery Guest & Snowed In

We’ve had a crazy winter here in PA, as I know many others have as well.  Well, today, we’re getting hit with the biggest storm of the season.  It’s been snowing all night and is supposed to snow all day.  So, we’re snowed in.  What’s so funny, though, is I have a wonderful friend visiting and she and her son are snowed in right along with us!  We’re all hanging out in our jammies and the coffee drinkers are keeping the Keurig busy.  And we are playing, creating, laughing, chatting, dreaming, scheming and even working out and eating healthy together. So, who is my guest?  I’ll give you some hints and see if you can guess… She is a blogger She says ya’ll a lot She can palm a boy’s basketball She’s one of the coffee drinkers keeping the Keurig busy (I’m not) She refers to me as “THE mustard

Alternative to Seagrass & Jute

Over the last few months, I’ve been switching out most of the rugs in my house to seagrass and jute.  I’ve kept a few wool rugs, but I’m really enjoying the neutral color and rich texture brought to a space by natural grass rugs.  I will admit, though, as lovely as they are, there are a couple of downsides.  One is that they shed fibers and dust.  I’m used to huge fur balls with wool rugs, so jute shedding is tame in comparison.  It is a little annoying, though, and can be a big problem for people with allergies. So, when Yasmin of Decor Steals contacted me about testing out a rug that looks like jute or seagrass, but is a made of a synthetic material that doesn’t shed, unravel, etc., I agreed to give it a try.  I’m pretty set on rugs, but my guest room floor has been naked
