{word of the year}

I just spotted that my sweet friend Layla is having a word-of-the-year party, so I thought I would join in.  It actually fits nicely with what I was going to write about today, anyway.  I’ve had a few overwhelming moments this year already…and we’re only nine days in!  It’s all good stuff, but I’m realizing that when too many good things happen all at one time, it can be overwhelming. Last year around this time, I wrote a post challenging you to not be afraid.  To follow God’s leading in your life and to do so with a spirit of courage.  A few days ago, I realized I wasn’t following my own advice.  I was afraid.  Not afraid of failure, but afraid of success.  Afraid of things getting out of control and beyond what I wanted.  Afraid of the expectation, responsibility and criticism that comes with success.  I started this business

Nest Painting Giveaway

Some of you spotted the gorgeous next painting in my master bedroom… It was painted by my very dear friend, former student in our youth ministry, designer of my logo and an amazing artist, Laura Dreyer.   She is now selling original oil nest paintings in her Etsy shop and graciously offered one up for a giveaway.  Here it is… This is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting on a 16 x 20″ canvas with a soft gold frame. It’s gorgeous.  I cannot express how talented Laura is.  She doesn’t have a lot listed in her Etsy shop right now, but she does paint commissioned pieces, so send her an e-mail if you’re interested.  Here are some of her other nest paintings… …and I think this one is my favorite… Stunning. If you’d like to win the nest painting, just leave a comment.  For two additional entries, you can Tweet or share this giveaway on Facebook and

{hello twenty-twelve}

Happy New Year!  I must say, I’m excited about 2012.  2011 was a fantastic year for me full of exciting e-mails and big opportunities and lessons learned and growth and friendships.  I feel like even more exciting things are around the corner, though, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.  It’s exciting and terrifying all at the same time.  I keep clinging to the fact that God has not given us a spirit of fear or timidity, but of power and love and discipline.  I’m purposing to step into this new year and face the opportunities it will bring with courage.   So, what’s on the calendar so far?  The focus of the first few months will be writing and photographing for my book.  Everything’s due in March, so it’s going to be an intense couple of months.  I also have some freelance articles to finish, a magazine photo shoot and another exciting thing

French chair makeover & updates

After a whirlwind week of activities and festivities, we dropped my parents off at the airport this afternoon.   We got so much accomplished, it’s amazing.  I started getting a little teary-eyed today when I saw so many projects complete.  I know that’s silly, but some of them have been five years in the making and now they’re almost done. Before I show some progress on the house, I’ll share my latest French chair makeover.  I’m really missing working on furniture, but I have a few pieces I’m going to work on in a few days.  It was nice to get this chair finally finished.  I’ve had it since June, painted it in July, upholstered it sometime in the fall and I finally made the cushion cover and put on the trim this week.  Here’s how it started… It wasn’t bad, but it was just a little dated and tired.  Here’s

an early present & a song

As usual, I was probably doing what no one else in the US was doing two days before Christmas…I was mulching my front yard.  I have a special photo shoot coming up in January and, while they’re not coming because of my gardening ability, I want the front of my house to look decent.  We divided and conquered and all four of us accomplished a lot today.  I even took some time to make a rather pathetic gingerbread house with my boys.  It tasted good and we had fun, so that’s what counts. Tomorrow is for wrapping, cooking and spending some time just hanging out, getting ready for Christmas.  I did get an early Christmas present, though.  My parents have been talking about moving up to PA to be closer to us and the grand kids for a few months and yesterday, they put a contract on a house about 8

Living Room Decorations

I spent most of the day yesterday working on the decorations in my living room and it was so fun how it all came together.  I’m using mostly things I bought last year, found in my yard and craft room or had leftover from my retail space.  There’s something in the process of repurposing items that I find enjoyable.  It’s that ah-ha moment…”Oh, I can use this ribbon I’ve had for years and put it over this sheet music and tuck in a feather from my friend’s farm and a piece of greenery snipped from my yard!  That will look great!”  I had a lot of those moments as I pulled out sheet music banners Mini and I had made to use at Lucketts and when I ripped apart an old artificial wreath to give it a new look with fresh greens, rolled sheet music, feathers and glittered leaves.  It’s

all talk, no pictures

I went to bed Saturday night feeling pretty run down and I woke up Sunday morning feeling terrible.  I laid around all day, in bed mostly, and watched movies.  And I have to be really sick to do that.  Fortunately, our family doctor goes to our church, so my husband was able to get an antibiotic for me to take right away.  I woke up this morning feeling better and after a second round of antibiotics and some cold & flu medicine, I am a new woman. I started working on the Christmas decor in my living room.  Would you believe it took me almost all day to decorate the tree and about 3/4 of my living room?  That’s some serious holiday decorating!  I was multitasking a bit, though.  I sorted the holiday bins and cleaned my office, plus I was making most things from scratch, so it wasn’t as
