it is time

On April 27, 2012 (four months ago to the day), I announced that I was going to have my own line of milk paint.  It was my pie-in-the-sky-dream-come-true.  Four months later, I received my first shipment of milk paint.  Not just any milk paint.  MY milk paint.  Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint.  In the boxes and labeling and packaging that I carefully selected and hmmm’d and haw’d over.  In the custom colors I mixed and designed.  I sat cross-legged on the floor, pricing each box.  Just by myself.  In a bandanna and some sweats splattered with paint.  There wasn’t a big ribbon to cut or a ceremony and I wasn’t sipping an IZZE soda while a team of people I don’t know priced it for me.  It was just me in my living room with my paint.  It was a sweet moment as I looked at the stack of boxes.  It’s

True Value Tool Review

Am I the only one who has trouble finding the right screwdriver that’s the right size and shape for the hardware I have to remove from a dresser?  Usually I need a flat-head screwdriver for the vintage pieces and I’m always misplacing them.  I use them so often for prying things, opening paint cans, etc. and I’m not the greatest at putting things away.    So, when True Value sent me the Swift Driver by Master Mechanic, I thought, “This is a gadget that’s perfect for me!”     It basically is a hybrid between a regular screw driver and a drill.  You turn the handle and there are some gears inside that turn the tip a little faster. (I’m sure that’s not the technical description…)   …and it successfully removes the hardware (as it should.)     There’s a small switch on the side to turn, so it can drive

there are limits…

If you’re a risk -taker, a work-horse, a dream-chaser or a go-getter, you know that it can be tough to find your limits.  You always feel like you can do more and it’ll all work out.  Some can, but I think most people who fit into that category think they can and then they get burned out.  There have been times in the four years I’ve been doing business when I’ve been burnt out, but it’s always just been for a week or two and then I’m ready to roll again.  I’m not feeling burnt out now, but I don’t want to get to that point.   I L-O-V-E what I’m doing.  I love this blog.  I love my business.  I love the opportunities I’ve gotten from it.  But there are limits and I haven’t been very good at setting them.  A few months ago, my gallbladder crapped out on

Shop Lucketts – August Special

I wanted to share the latest Shop Lucketts special for August…   …it’s this galvanized tray with rope handles.  Here’s what the design gurus at Lucketts have to say about it… “We love this tray because it evokes a sense of relaxed simplicity — it’s not trying to be beautiful, it just is.  The beautiful galvanized metal texture with rope handles is utilitarian, but start decorating with this beauty, and it makes everything around it come to life.  At our Design House, we have used this tray on coffee tables to group books and decorative accessories, and it’s been the perfect size at parties to help serve drinks and hors d’oeuvres.  One of our newest and most favorite finds from our summer buying trip!”         This tray usually retails for $45, but they’re offering it at more than 20% off for $35 for my readers.  Snap it

Patience is a virtue…

…and I know I’m really testing it!  I’ve been getting a lot of “will you just sell the milk paint to me already” kind of e-mails and comments over the last couple of weeks.  Here’s is why it’s taking so long…  I thought it was just going to be ME selling the paint at Lucketts and online.  I thought maybe we would bring a few retailers on board after I had some proven success.  It turns out that a lot of people want to join me on this journey, so I started with 15 retailers and then we just kept adding more until now we’re up to over 80 retailers and we have about 150 on hold until we’re ready to bring on more.   That doesn’t sound like too big of a deal, but when you consider that it’s just a few people putting all of this together, it’s a

I needed Faith

I had a little idea a few months ago. It was just an idea to have milk paint colors I loved in cute packaging.  I kicked that idea over to Homestead House Paint Co. and they thought it sounded like a good idea.  Well, I announced this little idea on my blog and it has exploded!  We’re about to launch the paint line with 80 retailers around the US and a few in Canada and one in the UK.  Plus we have about 150 potential retailers who have sent inquiries.  All of this is awesome and terrifying and overwhelming and exciting and it’s finally pushed me to hire someone to help me.  (It’s about time, I know!) Meet Faith, my new Business Manager…   How perfect is it that her name is Faith?  If you aren’t aware, Miss Mustard Seed is a reference to a verse in the Bible about

The Bagster Bag Pickup

I don’t know about you, but cleaning out our basement seems to be an ongoing effort. A few weeks ago, though, we made a big push to get everything really cleaned out.     We’re still working on the organization and, of course, it doesn’t help that I continually bring in new stuff and we’re always working on projects, but it’s getting there.  After the initial major cleanup effort, we ended up with a rather large pile of garbage in the back yard, just outside the basement steps.  (Our poor neighbors.)  It was there for a few weeks.  Yes, my husband mowed the grass around it and it looked pretty ghetto.  Our own little refuse pile in the backyard.  I then received a very timely e-mail asking if I’d like to test out the Bagster Bag.  “Well, I happen to have a pile of trash in my backyard right now.”

KK Children Designs Giveaway!

**This giveaway is now closed**  Boy, everyone.  I am so sorry for missing Furniture Feature Friday this week.  I can’t believe I missed my own party!  It was simply a matter of me totally forgetting what day of the week it was.  I’m really hoping with the fall and a regular school/work schedule will come a bit of sanity on my part.  Good grief.  Anyway, I was able to get some more technical details worked out today and painted a couple of pieces (Ironstone and Grain Sack.)  I can’t wait to show them off when they’re totally done. Today, though, I have a giveaway by KK Children Designs.  I usually don’t do clothing/kid stuff giveaways, but when I received an e-mail from these talented ladies asking if I would host a giveaway, I was blown away by the off-the-charts cuteness and quality of the dresses sold in their Etsy shop.  As a
