Furniture Makeovers

buying & selling antiques

in the lobby

Well, I’m all cozy and snug in my new retail space in the lobby at Lucketts!  There’s still a lot that I want to do, but I was able to get some pieces in the space and figure out my game plan.  Some girls got my space settled while I was out of town and they put these two huge, beautiful bookcases on either side of the hardware counter.  They looked absolutely perfect there, so I changed my game plan and bought them to keep in the space.   (I’ll probably paint them eventually.)  The plan is to fill the shelves and bins with my paint, companion products, books, t-shirts, bottles of glitter and some antique goodies.  I’ll put a feature piece (probably a dresser) up on the hardware counter and on the wall where the Lucketts Green dresser is.     I decided to bring my legs in so

Milk Paint Video Tutorials!

I just uploaded my first three video tutorials on working with my Milk Paint!  The milk paint won’t be widely available until August 2012, but I wanted to start putting the videos out there to answer some questions about Milk Paint and to show what kind of tutorials will be available.  Enjoy!   Subscribe to my You Tube Channel if you want to see the latest videos when they come out! Say hello to “Typewriter”

What else would I call the black in my milk paint line?  I thought about “fan”, but that didn’t work for me, so I went with Typewriter, one of my other favorite vintage decorating elements. Introducing this color was tricky for me because I don’t usually paint pieces entirely black.  It looks too heavy to me and I think you lose a lot of the detail of the piece.  So, I decided to leave the drawers wood, paint the body black and add a little decorative painting to the front.   Here’s how the dresser started…   Those stripes are contact paper.  I was about to rip them to shreds (figuratively) for being so ugly, but then I realized it was really pretty clever.  They applied a burled-looking contact paper in strips to look like inlay.  Ugly, but the idea is clever.  Very thrifty, too.  I pealed off the contact

Say Hello to “Lucketts Green”

Happy 4th of July to everyone!  We just finished our hamburgers and corn and I’ll partake of some black cherry ice cream once the boys go to bed.  This morning, though, I had some time in the workshop to complete a couple of dressers to introduce two more of my milk paint colors and to get the pieces ready to take to Lucketts tomorrow.  So, without further delay, say hello to Lucketts Green…   Here’s the dresser before…     So, why is it called Lucketts Green?  Well, if you’ve ever been to Lucketts, you would know immediately why I call it that.  For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, this is why… It’s very similar to the color of the shingles on the exterior of The Lucketts Store.   And for those of you who don’t know, it’s one of my favorite places on earth and I am privileged to be a

new pieces & making videos

I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday, but I did get a chance to paint some pieces in the workshop. And it was awesome.  I made a few of my milk paint videos… …showing how to mix the paint and what to expect when working with a powdered paint… While making the video, I refinished the top of this piece and painted the base in Lucketts Green… …and started working on this one to showcase my black – Typewriter. I’m enjoying this one… I hope to have something to reveal tomorrow. The winners of the Goose Creek Candle Giveaway are… Judy (tjgibson84), Cynthia Briggs, Nancy Salamo, Lonna Berridge, Ashley Yasek and Kelly of Dragonfly Ink Designs.  Congrats, ladies! For those of you who didn’t win, remember you can use coupon code 1062512 when you check out and you’ll receive 30% off your entire order.

What’s going on…

I have to laugh because I had no idea when I had the thought of having my own milk paint line, then presented it to Homestead House, then announced it on my blog that it would totally takeover my life!  It’s been nuts and amazing all at the same time. I have started pinning confirmed locations of my retailers and we’re at 50 so far.  Fifty!  And I still have some more orders and applications in my in box.  I wasn’t prepared for that at all.     After printing about 30 applications and orders on my little $50 printer, I gave my husband the business card and sent him to the store to get a more professional printer/scanner/fax/copier.  The first time I printed wirelessly was magical.   Faith, my new assistant, will be starting in a few weeks and it can’t come soon enough!!  I’m still going to do a LOT

the language of color

I am learning all sorts of new things as I’m working on launching a paint line. One of those lessons has been on the universal language of color. In order to communicate with the designers I’m collaborating with, I have had to learn the standard, the reference point, so we’re all looking at the same color. I have lots of paint decks (I am bit of a junkie), so I thought I could just pull out the Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams color that was closest to what I was thinking for one of my 12 colors. Well, that’s not the case. That would probably work in a pinch, but it’s not the standard. The standard is Pantone.       So now I have my color reader and my Pantone paint deck and I am able to find the Pantone color that matches my custom milk paint color.

the big black box

It all started with a black Friday sale.  We had been thinking about getting a flat screen TV for a while and we found the one we wanted on an Internet sale for $1000 off.  We decided it was time and pulled the trigger.  The TV we owned at the time fit in an armoire in the corner, but that wasn’t going to work for the new flat screen.  Despite the sacred DIY rule to never remove a fireplace, we decided to remove our fireplace, which didn’t work and we weren’t very fond of anyway.   As soon as we got home from visiting family, the project began.  (Guys don’t procrastinate on a project when a flat screen TV is involved.)   It was messy, but the demolition only took a few hours.     I patched and painted the wall and found a perfect vintage buffet to use as a console.   For a while, though,
