$4.00 Chair + White Cotton Twill =

I absolutely love being able to make slipcovers.  If you don’t detest sewing, you really should try your hand at making one.  When we purchased our house 3 1/2 years ago, we were moving from 1010 square feet to about 2500.  We needed furniture, but buying new was not in the budget…nor is that my style.  So, we started hitting yard sales and we came across this chair for $4.00.  I wasn’t in love with the lines, but it was comfy, sturdy and it didn’t stink.  I knew it would be greatly improved by a slip cover.  Enter the white cotton twill. I made a fitted cover with minimal piping and a pleated skirt.  My slipcovers are not perfect, but I only make them for my home, so they don’t have to be.  I love that I can just toss them into the wash with a little bit of bleach

Gold Leaf Tutorial

I was asked if I would do a gold leaf tutorial and I was happy to share how easy and effective this process is. I purchased an entire armload of large, dated frames at an auction for a quarter.  I was not quite sure what I was going to do with them at the time, but the auctioneer looked at me and almost pleaded with me to take them off his hands.  These two frames were in that lot. They are clearly 1960’s-70’s style frames and not at all my taste. They had an interesting texture that seemed like a great candidate for applying gold leaf. In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to apply gold leaf to a frame, but you can apply metal leaf to almost anything. First of all, make sure your surface is clean.  Also, what’s underneath the leafing may peak through, so make sure it’s

Half Canopy Tutorial

I have received a huge response from my half canopy, so I am following up with a tutorial.  I try to keep all of my posts from being too wordy, but this one will be the exception.  Now, I did not take pictures while sewing, but I’ve included a drawing and I’ll talk you through it.  The sewing part of this tutorial assumes that you have some sewing skills and can figure it out.  If you don’t sew, never fear!  Try making this with some pretty cotton sheets or some premade curtain panels.  This project looks fancy and complex, but it’s actually very simple.  All of the sewing is just going in a straight line.  If you can sew in a straight line, you can make this. Sewing Ok, here’s the fabric you need to replicate this look on a queen sized bed in a room with 8′ ceilings.  10 yards

“Joy” Banner Tutorial

Here’s my tutorial on how to make this cute and easy “Joy” banner for the holidays. It was the kind of project I made up as I went along and I really like how it turned out. (Don’t you love it when that happens?) 1.) First, you need some chipboard letters to spell out whatever word you want on the banner. You can buy them, cut them yourself with an exact-o knife, or with a Cricut or other personal cutting machine. I purchased this package of 26 pages for $10.00 at AC Moore. One cool thing about this package is that once I use all of the letters, I can use what’s left as a stencil. 2.) I decided on the word Joy and picked three letters that were the same size, but different fonts to make it more interesting. 3.) Using a foam brush, apply Elmer’s glue onto the

Slipcovered Ottoman

I love ottomans. They are so versatile. They can be a foot stool, coffee table, side table, and you can slide them under another table to pull out when you need some extra seating. They are the ultimate multi-taskers when it comes to furniture and they are easy to slipcover. I purchased this one at a yard sale for $4.00. The upholstery was a little tired, but it was in otherwise good condition. I sewed up a slipcover using sanded white cotton twill from Wal-Mart. This took about 2 1/2 yards of fabric, plus piping and thread. I chose to go with a pleated skirt to make the piece look a bit more feminine. I absolutely love how it turned out. I know some of you may be hesitant to use white slipcovers in your home, but I have two toddler boys, two cats, and a husband and all of

Slipcovered Chair Reveal!

Well, despite having the flu, I finally got well enough to finish this chair that I started to slipcover last week. Here’s how it started. It was a leftover from an auction, so it was free. Can you believe that no one would even pay $1.00 for this? I mean, it’s dated, but it’s sturdy and the upholstery was in pretty good condition. I guess they didn’t see the potential in it. There loss is my gain! The first thing I did was remove the frilly skirt, so I could have a skirted slipcover and you wouldn’t see the old one underneath. I swapped out the frilly skirt for a more tailored pleated one. I made the slipcover out of my bargain fabric ($2.50/yard) from Wal-Mart that resembles linen or hemp. This fabric was great to work with and I love the nubby texture of it. It really is an

How to Sew Custom Piping

First of all, I have been featured with some other fabulous furniture makeovers on The DIY Show Off, so make sure you check it out! I have had several questions about how I make my slipcovers & pillows, so I thought I would share some sewing tutorials. I am a self- and book-taught seamstress, so I am not a sewing expert, but I can share with you how to sew pillows, slipcovers, and curtains for your home. This tutorial is on how to make your own custom piping (trim) to be used in your home decor sewing. First of all, you need a zipper foot attachment for your sewing machine. You can get these anywhere sewing machines or supplies are sold. You also need some piping cord. You can purchase this in 10 yard bags at Wal-Mart (if they still have a sewing section) or at a place like JoAnn

Slipcovering a Chair

I bought this pair of french styled chairs at an auction a few weeks ago. (Only one is pictured, but they are a matching pair.) I was in love with the lines, the style, the down seat cushion…not the fabric so much, but that can be remedied. Those chairs were coming home with me and I kept raising the amount that I would pay for them. Only $50 for the pair…maybe $80…is $100 too high? At the auction I was certain that everyone in the room was going to bid on those chairs. When they went up “on the block” the bid started at $10…yes, I’ll pay $10. And nothing happened. There was not a bidding frenzy, people weren’t throwing their paddles in the air. Could I get them for $10? Then a paddle went into the air…here we go…I’m ready, pal, you’re going to loose. He bid $15 and
