Christmas tree in an antique laundry basket

When I shared about using presents as part of Christmas decorations yesterday, several people asked here and on Instagram about two things: How did I get the Christmas tree to stand up in the antique French laundry basket, and where is the antique goat cart? So, let’s talk about those two things. First of all, I decided to try something different this year with the dining room Christmas tree.  Since it’s only our third Christmas in this house, I’m still playing with options.  I like to keep decorating for Christmas a little open so I can feel free to try new things or change things up from year to year.  I don’t want to do a full overhaul, but use the things I have differently.  So, I decided to leave the goat cart stored in the basement this year and tried putting the dining room tree in one of my

presents are a part of Christmas decor

I am a multitasker to my core. I like flitting from one thing to the next, but I also seem to work at my best when I’m juggling a few things.  As a part of being a multitasker, I’m always looking for ways to make the things I have and do work in more ways than just one.  It’s helpful in business when one piece of furniture can be blog content, a social media post, a YouTube tutorial, an avenue to promote products, and eventually a product to sell.  It’s helpful in decorating when one piece can be beautiful, and functional, and will look just as good in the dining room as it did in the living room.  And, of course, this carries over into Christmas and seasonal decorating. I don’t want to have too many things beyond a couple of trees that are Christmas-specific.  I want ribbons I can

Society6 prints & paper sale

For those interested in prints, wrapping papers, and cards, I added a few new designs to my Society6 shop and most of my products are currently 50% off! One of my newest prints is this pair of rabbits… I didn’t add any new paper designs this year (time got away from me), but papers I designed in previous seasons are still available and are on sale for $10, which is 60% off the regular price.  You can find all of my wrapping paper designs HERE.  Society6 wrapping papers come in packs of five 20″ x 29″ sheets and are the perfect weight for wrapping presents or even using for craft projects and handmade gifts.  It’s thick so it doesn’t tear easily and isn’t see-through, but it’s not so thick that it won’t hold a nice fold. I hope to add some more patterns this year.  I really love pattern design,

2024 Christmas tree | set-up, lights, and garland

When we got back from our trip for Thanksgiving, we unpacked the car and while we were carrying things, I had the guys carry the tree up from the basement for me.  I usually might wait a day or two so we could settle and unpack, but with December a day away, I wanted to get rolling.  Thankfully, I had given myself a gift last year.  Instead of putting all of the lights on when the tree was put together, I put them on one section at a time.  This allowed me to unplug the lights and leave them on the tree when we put it away.  Happily, all of the strands were still in working order and we were able to get the tree up and lit pretty quickly. If you haven’t been here for past Christmases or you need a reminder, this tree is an 8′ Noble Fir

dining room mural | for now

We’re back home from visiting family for Thanksgiving.  We unpacked and put up the Christmas tree the day we got home so we had lots of time to enjoy the lights and ambience through the season.  I also set up a tree in the dining room, which is exciting to see against the backdrop of the mural.  This week, I’ll be working on more Christmas decorating, but before we get into that, I wanted to share what the mural looks like for now.  I still don’t consider it finished because I want to add or adjust a few things, and I’m still strongly considering applying an antiquing glaze to mute the colors and soften the overall look.  I even received the glaze just before we left for our trip, but I decided I would get through Christmas and then decide. So, here is how it looks for now… I love

2024 Christmas decorating guide

I was a little behind last year and by the time I shared some of my favorite Christmas decor ornaments, swags, and faux greenery, they were sold out!  So, I decided to get ahead and post them just before Thanksgiving (and while most items are on sale.)  Many of these items are ones I’ve used for several years and have returned to retailers once again.  They are all classic and can fit a variety of decorating styles. Realistic LED candles | Norfolk pine garland | Faux cedar picks | Faux juniper | Bird ornaments | 2024 Wallace Bell | Society6 Miss Mustard Seed Paper | Cozy knit stocking | Velvet ribbon  I fell in love with the Norfolk Pine collection a few years ago and, since then, have added a few garlands, wreaths, branches, and even a small bucket-sized tree.  They are an investment up front, but they save a lot of money (and mess) in the

2024 Christmas gift guides

It’s that time of year!  The time to start (or continue) elfing for our friends and family.  I’ll be honest and share that I’ve done a bit of elfing for myself when I’ve come across can’t-pass-up deals for some of my favorite things.  As I’ve done in previous years, I’ve put together a few different gift guides in the hopes something will pop out as a novel idea for someone on your list.  Ultimately, though, I pick things that I like and that I think are worth sharing with others.  So, if you’re like me (and I imagine we have some similar interests if you read this blog), then you might find a few things to add to your Christmas list, too. Of course, there are books included in each of my gift guides!  It’s just unavoidable.  There are some high gifts, some stocking stuffers, and a few things that

dining room makeover | the new velvet curtains

Last week, I made a final push to get the dining room mural to a place I could call it “done for now” and put the room back together.  The best part was hanging up the new curtains custom-made for the room by Neutral Curtains.  (As a disclosure, I partnered with Neutral Curtains for an Instagram post and received these curtains as a part of that partnership.  This blog post is not a part of my obligation, though.  I wanted to share here because the curtains are gorgeous and my experience with them was excellent.) The first thing I love about Neutral Curtains is you can order an entire sample book for $1.00, which includes free shipping.  That’s not $1.00 for one swatch.  It’s for an entire book.  I ordered all the books so I could feel the fabric options and see the colors in my own space. And my
