Christmas Living Room 2018

I know this is a crazy busy time of year for everyone and I must say that this week has been a doozy for the Parsons’ family.  We have been slammed with stuff to do and appointments and obligations from every side…family, work, church, school.  That’s why I’ve been quieter than usual on my blog.  It was just not possible to get a post out mid-week.  We’re expecting a winter storm this weekend here in MN and I’m sort of hoping we get even more snow than expected, so we have a good excuse to stay in our jammies and cocoon ourselves from the world for a couple of days.  (I also hope to get a chance to paint, because I have not been able to since before we left for Thanksgiving and I miss it!) Anyway, today, I am a part of the Farmhouse Christmas Tour with an amazing group of bloggers…

LED Christmas Tree Candle Hack

Last year, I must admit that I was decorating for Christmas mostly because it was just the right time of year to start decorating for Christmas.  I only put a fraction of ornaments on our tree and I didn’t have the creative capacity to work through figuring out how this home would best be dressed for Christmas.  We had only lived here for a few months and so much of the home still didn’t feel like me.  It was hard to get past that.  This year, though, I feel the creative juices stirring and I am enjoying the process of trial and error.  I’m allowing the long pauses, where it looks like I’m just sitting in front of a pile of decorations, but the wheels are inwardly turning.  Sometimes the ideas that come out of those pauses prove to be stupid.  But, there are times when I have an idea

Dining Room Christmas Tree 2018

Disclosure: This dining room Christmas tree post is sponsored by Balsam Hill.  As always, all opinions shared are honest and my own. Several years ago, I pitched my artificial Christmas tree, purchased at a 75% off after-Christmas discount.  It clearly looked artificial and shed worse than a long-haired cat.  I was tired of storing it and wanted to give live trees a try.  I hadn’t had a live tree since I was a child.  We adopted two Siamese cats when I was in 2nd grade and their first Christmas in our home, they climbed the live tree and drank the water in the stand, resulting in two kittens with belly aches from the sap.  From that point on, we had a fake tree and I carried that tradition into adulthood. I love live trees, but I have learned the downsides.  I had a few trees dry out before Christmas, so I

Christmas faux-liage reviews

I owe some of you an apology.  For the past few years, I have shared tips on decorating a home with fresh greens at Christmas and doled out all sorts of advice on the subject.  When I would receive questions about keeping the greens fresh, I would answer that they just need to be put it in place and left alone.  It will slowly dry, but it will look nice for a few weeks. Okay, that was when I had hot-water heat.  Now that I have forced air, I have been introduced to the disappointment experienced when you pay good money for fresh garlands, sprigs, and swags only to have them dry to a complete crisp long before Christmas arrived. Last year, an advent wreath I made only lasted about two days… Oh, it looked so pale and droopy and sad.  The garland on the stair banister required a 30-minute vacuuming

No-Fail Apple Pie Recipe

I attempted to make apple pie many times and it never turned out quite right.  The dough was tough or the filling was runny or there was a big pocket of air under the top crust or the apples weren’t fully cooked, but the crust was burnt on the edges.  I finally threw in the towel.  We’ll just buy a stupid pie since I can’t make a proper one.  Then, I was taught the recipe and all of the secrets to making a perfect, no-fail apple pie. We had just moved to Pennsylvania and a couple had us over for dinner.  For dessert, she served the best apple pie I ever had.  Ever.  After all of my pie-making failures, I was not shy about asking if she would teach me her ways.  And I was learning from an expert.  She grew up on an apple orchard and then owned an apple

Christmas past

As I’ve been getting ready for Christmas in this new house, I’ve turned my thoughts to past Christmases.  I have always loved Christmas and I have a lot of good ones to look back on… The Christmas when my parents gave me a German dollhouse, complete with painted furniture and red checked “feather deckers” on the beds.   The Christmases I spent rushing off from Christmas brunch to dance in the nighttime parades at Disney.  Yes, it was working on Christmas, but there was something magical about it, just the same.  It was Disney, after all.  And the Christmas when Jeff and I farm-sat for some friends and I was running around in my jammies and wellies, feeding the goats and horses before we opened our presents. But one of my favorite Christmases was the one that seemed, as we were getting ready for it, like it might be one of

Wallace Sleigh Bells

My Oma was an avid collector.  It was just in her nature and she didn’t fight it.  After she passed away, it was almost overwhelming dealing with all of the stuff.  Thousands of swizzle sticks and postcards, and five gallon buckets in a row, filled to the brim with seashells collected on the North Carolina shore over the years.  She collected cookbooks, Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates, campaign buttons, silver dollars and dimes, souvenir spoons, alabaster fruit, Stieff Repousse silverware and serving pieces, and Hummels.  That list maybe scratches the surface. She also collected Wallace Sleigh Bells. She bought one every year from the time they started making them in 1971.  As we were sorting through her attic, we came across the sleigh bells and divided them between her children and grandchildren, so I brought home four of them.  I selected my birth year, Jeff’s birth year, and two random years

Christmas porch

Again, I couldn’t help myself. Once our porch was stripped of the pumpkins that were past their prime and the frost-bitten topiaries, it looks a little sad.  And it certainly doesn’t help that we don’t have one evergreen plant or bush in the front gardens.  Everything is brown and leafless, just emphasizing the ugly side of winter and the lack of attention we’ve paid to the landscaping. The garden beds will have to wait until spring, but I felt like some garlands and lights would do a lot to dress things up for Christmas. I bought two mixed live garlands to hang around the front door and front window and a pair of potted evergreens with some clipped live greens tucked in around them.  I also dug some indoor-outdoor string lights from my Christmas bins to wrap around the greenery. To hang the light-wrapped garlands, I tapped a large nail
