german glass glitter letters & giveaway

I have been making German glass glitter letters for years.  See the old school watermark? I was so excited when I finally found German glass glitter and some great chipboard letters in amazing fonts.  I made them for myself in the beginning and then started making them to sell in my retail space and it was a staple for several years. Great chipboard letters have become harder and harder to find, though.  I am hoarding three sets of the original letters I used in the first picture, but otherwise, what I’ve found has been pretty run-of-the-mill.  I thought I found some great ones, but when they arrived, they were different than what was pictured.  Bummer!  So, I’ve been looking for some alternatives and I found a good option… These plastic letters don’t come in the prettiest fonts, but they are simple, cute and already have magnets attached, so it saves some

children's book bunting

We launched our line of MMS German Glass Glitter just before Lucketts and, in such a busy time, I didn’t get to announce it until after the fair.  Now that I’ve had the chance to catch my breath and get back into a bit of a routine, I’m ready to start giving you some ideas for how you can use the glitter and showcase the different colors.  Really, it’s simple.  You can use it anywhere you want glitter, but I know some people like a bit more direction than that! Here’s what I came up with today… This project is a good example that a little glitter adds just that extra something and it doesn’t have to be reserved for froo-froo-sparkle-princess projects. I started with a tattered vintage children’s book.  I love the old illustrations and the colors, but the book was in really rough shape with a lot of scribbling,

Christmas in April

Yesterday I mentioned that Jeff and I went to the local tree farm and cut down a tree for my Christmas HGTV.com photo shoots.  It was a pretty odd event…cutting down a Christmas tree just a couple of days before Easter, but I have gotten used to the seasonal confusion that happens in the decorating and retail world.  You always have to be thinking and working well ahead of the seasons. Not only did we have to cut down and trim the tree yesterday, but I had to decorate it three times to photograph three different tree skirts.  My arms had so many pin pricks on them it looked like I had hives!  I guess I usually have long sleeves on when I’m decorating the tree in December!  Despite my flesh wounds, the process was fun in its own weird little way. The first tree skirt was a “sunburst” design,

Christmas 2013 Recap

I’ve gotta say…it was really tough for me to get in the spirit of Christmas this year.  I’m not sure what it was.  It’s my favorite time of year and I usually can’t wait to put the tree up and start listening to my Christmas play list.  I love the decorations all over the house, the lights, the food, the get-togethers, the white elephant gift exchanges and the Christmas plays.  I don’t know why, but this year it felt like something I had to get through and I hate even saying that! Christmas day, though, was wonderful and festive and fun and all of the things it’s supposed to be and made me glad I dragged myself into the Christmas spirit.  My husband ordered some pastries from a local 5 star bakery for everyone to enjoy in the morning as we opened presents… …and I put out some bing cherries

The Only Gift – A Christmas Song

For those who don’t know, I have a musical background.  Musical theatre was my hobby and passion throughout my childhood (and I later earned my degree in that field) and I played a variety of instruments.  My mom was a music teacher and taught everyone in my family how to play guitar and music was always a part of our home. When I met Jeff, my husband, I didn’t know he could sing.  I’ve always been a ham, but he was shy about that sort of thing.  One day in the car, I was listening to Les Miserables and he started singing along.  I gasped.  It was God’s gift to me.  It took a few years to get him to sing in public, but he joined the praise team at our last church and started to develop his ear for harmonies. A couple of years ago, I sang a song

Boxwood & My Christmas Tree

I just did a photo shoot today for the MMSMP color of the month, Boxwood, so I thought I would share.  I think this may be my favorite non-blue/gray color in the line.  It’s so rich and pretty.  I’ve sold all of the pieces I’ve painted in Boxwood, but I have a dresser in my son’s room that is just begging for it.  I was hoping to get to that this month, since it is the color of the month, but with slipcovers and upholstering and decorating for Christmas and the family room trim and all of that, I think it’ll have to wait.  Anyway, here are some pictures to give you a good sense of the color… Can you tell I enjoy these shoots?  I really do.  I think the photography/styling aspect of my job has become one of my favorite things to work on.  If you want to

Getting a Tree & Style Update

Today we went to pick out our Christmas tree at the local tree farm where we have bought our trees for the past few years.  It was a chilly day, so we strolled through the open barn looking over the lineup of 8 ft+ trees.  One caught my eye.  It was tall and looked perfect.  Confident in my ability to pick out an amazing tree, I went over to buy some garland while the tree I selected in about 10 seconds was wrapped and strapped to the top of our van.  When we got home, my husband trimmed the lower branches and we put it in the stand and put it in place. Hm.  It looked a bit thinner than I remembered and there were some big holes in the shape of it.  Plus, the branches point more up than out.  Did I really pick that tree?!   Yep.  I did.  Well,

Christmas Inspiration

Over the past few years, decorating for Christmas has been mostly about work.  That sounds terrible, because I love Christmas, but with a blog, freelance writing jobs, magazine shoots and a retail space, Christmas started in September, ended in February and often sprang up in July or some other random month.  By the time it was really Christmas, I was sort of Christmased out.  This is the first year that I have nothing going on.  No articles.  No retail space.  No magazine shoots.  While all of those things are an exciting and a fun part of my business, it’s sort of nice knowing that decorating for Christmas will just be about my family and decorating for us.  Yes, I’ll share pictures on the blog, but that’s not what it’s about. So, I’m looking at holiday decorating with a fresh perspective and excitement this year.  I look forward setting up a
