the antique post office register

As someone who enjoys unique antique finds and getting goodies in the mail, last week was a banner week!  I received several highly anticipated packages (I’ll share about those in other posts) and I made a trip to one of my favorite local consignment shops to pick up a vintage pond yacht I spotted and reserved on their Instagram stories.  Of course, while I was in the shop, I needed to take a look around and just a few steps in the door, I knew I was leaving with more than just the pond yacht when I spotted this amazing antique post office register… I had a silent dialogue with myself of how I didn’t really need this piece and I wasn’t even sure if I had room for it in my studio.  But, the price was so good for such a unique, quality piece ($228) and all of the

favorite things | marmalade crocks

I remember in my very early days of antiquing, I saw a little marmalade crock sitting on a window sill in an antique mall.  I was immediately drawn to it and, at $8.00, it was something I could afford to buy.  I used that jar for years to hold pens and pencils on my desk.  Now, I own at least a dozen antique marmalade crocks, much older and larger than the $8.00 purchase that started my collection. A few years ago, I bought several large lots of advertising pots, including marmalade crocks at a wholesale price.  While I sold most of them at the Lucketts Spring Market, I kept a few favorites for myself. I use them all over my house.  Marmalade crocks hold antique flatware in the kitchen… …knitting needles and crochet hooks in the studio… …scissors, rulers, pens, and pencils as well. And brushes.  Of course, brushes. I

back-to-school supplies for mom

Back-to-school is such an exciting time.  We make sure the pants are not high-waters, everyone gets a new pair of shoes, and we get to go shopping for pens, pencils, notebooks, and hand sanitizer.  But, we also need to take a minute to acknowledge that it’s such a hard time for moms.  The house is so quiet and clean and there isn’t anything to do but sit around and be sad until your kids come bounding home from school, ready to eat a snack the size of a meal.  It’s just a really rough time and moms deserve some consolation goodies to fill up that quiet, clean hole her kids leave in the house all day. When we get the boys’ supplies ready for back-to-school, we take an inventory of things we already have and then shop for the things that aren’t crossed off the list.  Moms are exempt from

“green bay local no. 485”

Well, this is the last of my Gold Rush Days finds from 2021, but I saved a good one for last!  I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to go to an antique market that particular day.  I am almost always in the mood to shop for antiques, but it was a hot and sticky Friday at the end of a very busy week.  I just didn’t know if I wanted to go through the trouble.  But, I had a list that had been sitting on my desk for several weeks of things I’d like to look for at the market and my friend Cheri was planning on going whether I went or not.  She got to the event early Friday morning and started sending me pictures of things she spotted that I might like.  That was enough to get me out of bed to get ready to go. I

antique pastry cutter & nutcracker

I am going to share more about the basement makeover this week (including sharing about painting the trim and light switches), but I thought I would share a couple more of my finds from Gold Rush Days today – an antique pastry cutter and a nutcracker with bone handles. Both of these finds were ones that I spotted early in the day, but did jump at right away.  Neither the antique pastry cutter nor the nutcracker were on my list, they weren’t things I *needed*, and they were both priced a little on the higher side.  So, I admired them and kept looking.  As I was shopping the rest of the market, though, I kept thinking about those two pieces.  I wondered if someone else bought them or if they would still be there.  I imagined them in my house. I’ve learned when antique shopping (or shopping for anything) to

no. 10 Ansco folding pocket camera (circa 1906)

One thing I’ve learned after years of shopping for antiques is to always open up boxes and cases.  Sometimes, the most delightful things are hidden away in a case that doesn’t look very impressive.  Typewriters, binoculars, sets of silver flatware, and cameras are just some of the things you can find in boxes and cases.  I opened a beat-up old leather camera case when I was at Gold Rush Days and found this beautiful antique camera from 1906 – the no. 10 folding pocket Ansco camera for just $20… I found a description of the no, 10 Ansco camera from THIS website – “The No. 10 Folding Pocket Ansco was manufactured by Ansco in circa 1906. This model was similar to the No. 9 Folding Pocket Ansco except that it featured rising-falling and swing front. Like the No. 9 it produced a large negative for landscapes and panel portrait work

gold rush days finds | collars & boots

Yesterday I shared about the antique letters and books I bought over the weekend at Gold Rush Days and today I’m going to share a few more of my finds as well as what I plan on doing with them. When I’m shopping for antiques, I sometimes have specific things I’m looking for, but I almost always end up buying things that “speak to me.”  I can’t explain why I’m drawn to certain things except to say that I just like what I like.  One of the things that I’ve always been drawn to, right from the very beginning of my love for antiques, is old clothes.  Even if I don’t buy them, I always take a minute to admire old shoes, hats, petticoats, socks, dresses, coats.  Some of my earliest antique purchases were baby dresses and little lace bonnets.  I even bought a pair of heeled leather wingtip shoes
