Tuscany, Paris, & Junk Bonanza

I have a couple of very exciting trips and events coming up this year that I wanted to share, in case you’re able to join me.  The first one is a biggie. A few months ago, I received an e-mail from one of my MMS Milk Paint retailers, Dana, of Le Beau Chateau.  She is a seasoned world traveler and has taken and led many trips to Europe.  She pitched the idea of a creative retreat in one of her favorite places – Tuscany. I’ve had a few invitations like these over the years.  I would always get a quick rush as I allowed the idea to become a reality in my mind.  But the real world…small kids, a husband in school, etc. would pull me out of the daydream.  It just wasn’t the right time.  Maybe one day, it’ll be the right time. When this opportunity came, it was

open-handed recklessness & practical plans

My time of retreat felt like flight.  Not the kind we’re used to these days when you’re herded like cattle through security and shoved into a seat appropriately sized for a nine-year-old.  It was flight that was light and swift, like a blue jay.  The wind was in my hair and I glided, soared, and soaked in the view. The landing has been a little rough, though.  I thought I was prepared for it.  I knew that coming home after having completely uninterrupted days in 70 degree weather and sunshine would be a jolt.  It’s been more than that, like there are literal forces at work against me, trying to siphon all enthusiasm from a completely full tank. I ended up in a mix of tears and manic laughter at my small group last Thursday, when I was asked to share a prayer request for the week.  Even though I was

fear is not the boss

Confession time… The last 2-3 years have been a bit of a struggle for me.  Maybe more than a bit, if I’m completely honest. Before you roll your eyes and wonder what on earth I could be struggling with, hear me out.  (And stick with me, because there is a happy ending.) The struggle has been an internal one and has been fostered by fear and nurtured mostly in silence.  It crept up with such stealth that it was hard to name or put my finger on.  It was an unexplainable, literal lump in my throat that would manifest itself almost daily.  It was moments of panic that would overwhelm me at times, a sense that things would come crashing down.  It was just a matter of time. These feelings, all circled around my business and blog and creativity, have made it harder to share with vulnerability, harder to take

ushering in spring with faux florals

Oh, girls…  I am down in Florida right now having a personal creative retreat and it’s been soooo good.  I can’t wait to sort through my pages of notes and share it all (or a lot of it) with you. But for today, I’m featuring one of my fellow creative business owners… I’ve followed Courtney from The French Country Cottage for years.  I’ve always admired her romantic, yet unfussy style.  Every time I read one of her blog posts or see a frame on her Instagram, I think, “Flowers must follow that girl everywhere she goes.” And now, Courtney has designed a faux floral line presented by Balsam Hill.  The pieces she designed for the line are so pretty and so “her”.  Very romantic and elegant. I hung the Marseille Meadow wreath on the hutch in my dining room and stood back to admire it. It was a stark contrast

February 2018 Favorites

It’s the beginning of another month and that means it’s time to look back at some of my favorites from the previous month.  As I wrote this post, I realized that there is a theme of “spending” spread throughout the highlights.  Spending time with friends and family, how and when I spend money, spending energy on creative endeavors, and spending time appreciating accomplishments. Here are my February favorites… Dining Room & Office Wood Floors  Oh my goodness, it’s amazing to have these done!  I still do a double-take every time I catch of glimpse of these rooms and I am just loving my office as it’s developing.  It’s pretty and practical and actually I’m working in the space a lot more, not just using it as storage for office-y stuff. And I’m looking forward to refinishing the table in the dining room, putting down a rug, getting stuff on the

Creative Retreat Planning

I’ve been saying for months that I need to press the pause button, so I have some uninterrupted, concentrated time to think and recharge.  My thought is this would be a day at home and everyone in the house will pretend I’m not there.  Yeah, I know that was wishful thinking! My kids can pretend to be ninjas and spacemen and super heroes, but they cannot pretend I am not there.  Sebastian doesn’t know what a creative retreat is and when he has to pee, my elbow is the one he will bump with his nose.  Jeff would do his best, but there’s only so much a guy who works full-time and is a full-time grad student can do to keep me fenced off. So, he brought up the idea of giving me the chance to go a local hotel for my own creative retreat.  The idea was still on

January 2018 favorites

Victoria Victoria on Masterpiece Classics is back!  This is a wonderful show, especially for period drama buffs, such as myself.  I think the first episode was off to a slow start, which made me nervous for season two, but it turned out to be a  great season!  (Tip: If you buy it on iTunes, you can see the entire season before it’s released on PBS, so I bought it and already binged.)   Sick-time Stories My oldest son, Marshall, has been so sick this month!  We think he had the flu, although that wasn’t confirmed with a test.  He was sick in every way for a week and it turned into an ear infection, so we suspect the flu.  Then, after his trip to Belize, he had strep throat. Him being sick was not a highlight, but while he was sick, he asked me to tell him stories.  I told

finding a happy medium & $600+ Sleep Number Giveaway

Disclosure: This post and giveaway is sponsored by Sleep Number®.  As always, all words and opinions are my own. In almost 19 years of marriage, Jeff and I have been able to find a lot of common ground.  We’re actually pretty good at finding happy mediums.  There is one place, though, where we’ve been stumped and where compromise hasn’t worked… Our mattress. I want a mattress to swallow me up.  He basically wants to sleep on a board.  (Not really, but it feels like that to me.) I’m sure so many couples can relate. So, what we have is a very-comfy-for-me, but too-soft-for-Jeff memory foam mattress that’s been relegated to the guest room and we’re sleeping on another very nice inner-spring mattress that is a compromise.  Jeff sleeps with a pillow between his legs for extra support and I toss and turn regularly to find a comfy spot. We’ve been
