favorite home project in 2011

As the year is winding down, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the best things that happened in 2011.  Today, I’m going to share my favorite projects we tackled in our home.  I did a lot of projects and makeovers, but I sold most of them, so I really enjoy projects I get to do in my own home.  We’re almost done with two that have been a long time in the making, but until those are finished, my favorite makeovers happened in the kitchen and family room. I was itching to paint these cabinets from the day we bought this house five years ago.  It was a happy day when I finally got the “thumbs-up” from hubby and the courage to tackle the 52 cabinet doors. …and what a difference.  It was totally worth all of the hard work.     I also love the changes we made in

the day after Christmas

I don’t know about you, but I’m totally whipped.  Christmas is exhausting.  Fun and definitely my favorite time of year, but exhausting.  The kids are over-loaded and tired, the “Christmas Bomb”went off leaving bits of paper and tape and pieces to toys and candy wrappers and crumbs all over the place and I’ve eaten way too much chocolate.  I’ve enjoyed the surprises and presents and going through the Christmas story with my boys while we acted it out with the Little People nativity set, the music and the food.  This was the first year my boys were really excited about Christmas and “got” what was going on, so that was a lot of fun.  I feel like I’ll be able to prepare for it all a little better next year.  This year was very much done flying-by-the-seat-of-my-pants.  But, we made it through and we’re blessed beyond measure.   After taking

It’s finally Christmas

After cramming fall and spring into one week, I’m finally getting ready for Christmas.  We put our “family” tree up today and I started decking out the dining room and entry hall.  The “pretty” tree is in it’s place, but I still need to put the lights on and decorate it.  I know the blog world has been showing off their Christmas decor for weeks, now, so I’m a little late.  I hope you’re not too sick of Christmas at this point!  If you’re not, here’s what I’ve done so far…                          I can’t wait to get more of it done.  I’m really getting into the spirit, now!

trim & a tree skirt

The project that won’t ever end (I seem to have a lot of those, don’t I?), is finally coming close to an end. This past week, I put in the trim around the baseboards and bead board. If you’ve ever put trim in an old house, you understand my pain. The floor is not level, the walls aren’t plum and it’s a nightmare to get things looking like they’re at least kind of straight. The floors are almost an inch off from left to right and from front to back, so putting in a squared off piece of bead board was tough. I ended up with a sizable gap where the bead board is supposed to fit snugly against the baseboard. Instead of trying to cut the piece at the exact angle, I decided to leave the gap and put some trim over it. Trim, caulk and paint can make

I hope you’re all having a great weekend.  I don’t have anything specific to share today, so I’m just going to share a few random bits. I’ve loved old trophies for years and have been fortunate enough to find some in my grandparent’s attic and a few small ones at yard sales, antiques shops and flea markets.  The big ones, though, have always eluded me.  Well, affordable ones, anyway.  My friends at Wuslu hooked me up with some wonderful reproductions.  I wanted two large trophies to plant my mini cypress bushes in and these were perfect.   I’m not normally into faux-tiques, but these are pretty darn convincing and certainly more affordable.        We were going to finally get our Christmas tree today, but decided we weren’t really in the mood, so I spent much of the day cleaning and hanging with the boys and my husband worked

I shared a few days ago that we ripped out our fireplace, all because of a great Black Friday deal on a flat screen HDTV.  So, we were left with a few holes in the wall, some raw drywall and a patch of plywood on the floor.  The pressure was on to find something to put under the TV before the TV arrived, because you know that thing was going on the wall within 8 minutes of it crossing over our threshold.  When I was at Lucketts on Thursday, I had the thumb’s up from my husband to look for a piece that would work.  I kept passing a French provincial buffet, but it looked like it was going to be too big.  After looking around some more and not finding anything else, I went back to the buffet.  I loved the color, the shape, the wood top and the storage
