Home Studio

the rest of the studio (for now)

On Monday, I shared the new Billy bookcases I added to the studio to get my library of art books off the floor and organized.  It’s made the studio space feel much more useable, functional, and conducive to creative work.  If you struggle with your creativity, productivity, effectiveness, and focus, look at your surroundings.  Are they a part of the problem?  I know my space was a problem.  I found it hard to write, I wasn’t excited about taking pictures, and I felt like I was tolerating the space instead of thriving in it.  Now, the main components are in place and it has given me just the boost I needed. Now that things are taking shape a bit better, I thought I would give a little tour of the rest of the space. Before we put the bookcases together, I scooted the hardware cabinet (which we left on sliders)

billy bookcases for the studio

I don’t do this very often, but I fell off the face of the blog world at the end of last week.  I really just needed to dive into getting things done and, as you can imagine, stopping to take pictures and write about it all slows things down quite a bit.  So, I took some unplanned time off to make some real headway in my studio (among other places) and I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to have some areas of the house put together.  Not finished, but put together.  Before I bailed on the blog last week, I shared that I had purchased four Billy bookcases from Ikea to hold my books in the studio.  We do plan to build shelving in the dining room to have a library, but that project might not happen for a while and, until then, I felt like I needed

books, bow windows, & blinds

One of the challenging parts about a home renovation following a move (in which things were packed up not knowing what house they were going to) is the stuff management.  I mean, we’re still not fully unpacked and definitely not even close to being organized.  Spending time on organizing even seems pointless when things will just be moved again.  Being the tidy person that I am, it’s a challenge.  I have to keep reminding myself that it’s temporary and there will come a time when I can dig it, sort through stuff, and feel on top of the stuff in our house once again.  But, there are hundreds of dominoes that need to fall before that happens. One of the areas that has crept higher up the priority list is my studio window as well as getting things a bit more manageable in my workspace.  Just as a reminder, here

Antiques

the antique victorian bamboo shelf

Remember the antique Thebes stool I found a few weeks ago at a local antique store?  Well, in that same booth, I found another incredible find at an excellent price – an antique Victorian burnt bamboo shelf.  I think it was $85 with an additional 20%.  As I picked up the rickety old shelf and handed it to Jeff, he gave me a quizzical look.  Trust me.  It’s special.   I have seen these antique burnt bamboo shelves go for a lot of money.  This one, while just a little shifty from being such a waif-like shelf, was in excellent condition.  I normally have a piece in mind where I can use a piece, especially a piece of furniture before I purchase it, but this is the kind of piece you can use in a dozen different places.  I imagined it in the kitchen stack with linens and some copper pots

thrift store ribbon holder

In between the unpacking, painting, and projects, Jeff and I have taken a morning or afternoon here and there to hit a few local second-hand shops.  One afternoon, we made the rounds to a few of the thrift stores just a couple of miles from our house.  At one of those thrift stores, I spotted a wooden rack.  At first, I wasn’t sure what it was…a towel bar, maybe?  Whatever it was, I liked it and thought it was interesting.  It could have dozens of different uses and it was only $10, so I decided to pick it up.  When I got it home and interacted with it more, I decided it was a paper towel holder.  I could’ve used it as that, but I decided to have a bit more fun with it and make it a ribbon holder in my studio. I have some gorgeous ribbons that I’ve

tour of my new art studio

It’s the room tour that many of you have been asking for – the art studio!  Of course, it’s not finished yet, as is the case with our entire house, but it’s getting there.  It’s settled enough and looks enough like an art studio to welcome you into the space and give you a little tour. As we were looking at homes, this was a big question that needed to be answered.  Where would my art studio be?  In some houses, there was an outbuilding that would’ve worked for a studio and/or workshop and in others, I’d have to appropriate a room originally intended for another purpose.  In some houses, there really wasn’t an option and those were crossed off the list.  It was a must.  I could be flexible with the size, location, and other details, but I had to have a space to work and create. When we

my temporary studio

As we were looking for an apartment or home to rent for the month between moving out of our house and driving out east, we had a few requirements.  Number 1, we didn’t want it to be outrageously expensive and, let me tell you, renting furnished apartments by the month can get absolutely crazy.  I was not prepared!  The second thing is that we wanted to have enough space so we wouldn’t feel on top of one another for four weeks.  That would be three bedrooms so the boys could each have their own personal space.  The final thing is that I needed a place to work…a temporary studio. My work can pretty much be done anywhere.  I just need my laptop and wifi and I can be productive, but I knew that I would really want a space that felt conducive to writing, painting, and creative work.  When I

touch-up paint therapy

Painting in some form or another has always been therapeutic for me.  It was a creative outlet when we lived in my in-laws’ basement while Jeff finished his degree.  It was transformative; a way to put my personal touch on every surface of the three homes we’ve owned over the years.  It was a task that could be completed amid a never-ending routine of monotonous household chores.  It was quiet and slow late-night time alone after a busy day with young boys.  It’s been a place of personal growth and development.  It’s been my go-to for over a decade when I want to create and think.  It’s the perfect mix of productivity and meditation. For this reason, a painting task I procrastinated on through the move turned out to be a gift. One thing that had been on the to-do list before we closed on our house was touching up
