Before and Afters

Slipcovered Chair & Rugs for Sale

Before I show you the chair and the rugs, I had to share a sweet gift I received in the mail yesterday.  It’s an ironstone thimble! Look at the little mark inside.  And it was wrapped with a paper tape measure bow.  I swear, I have some of the best readers.  Thank you, Susan. Now, on to the slipcovered chair.  Any guesses which one I pecked away at over the holidays? If you guessed one of the green velvet chairs, you’re right! I know a lot of you loved them as is and I’ve used them that way for a while, but it was time to change them up.  I don’t mind a touch of green in the paintings and from the boxwood, but I’m trying to de-green a bit.  Here’s the result… I know you perfectionists are looking at that crooked piece in the front.  You know who you

“If you give Marian a morning…”

Kerry from Home Sweet Organized Home left a comment yesterday about how I work and I just loved it.  It’s based on the adorable kid’s book If you Give a Moose a Muffin… “If you give Marian a morning, she’s going to go to the attic. When she goes to the attic she’s going to find a rug.  Finding the rug will remind her that she needs one in her bedroom.  When the rug goes in the bedroom, she is reminded that the room needed a little something . . . “ And that’s exactly how I work. So, if you’ve been following along, you know I’ve been rearranging the furniture in my family room to give myself a bit of a fresh start.  Since I moved the table out of the kitchen, that brought the kitchen into the shuffling.  I also removed the shutter that’s been leaning against the side of the

new/old rug & starting the reset

It was one of those days when I woke up ready to get things done.  I cleaned out the coat closet before I took the boys to school and didn’t eat a bite until my “late brunch” at 1:30 pm.  I wasn’t joking around.  (That’s not normal for me, by the way.  I’m a big fan of breakfast.) I’ve been wanting to clean out the attic space under the eaves in the guest room for weeks, so I started on that once the boys were at school.  Well, I cleaned out the built-in bench “cubbie” in the home office first, but then I started upstairs.  I actually had to clean up the guest room as well, since it had become a dumping ground for the window unit air conditioners and cast-off furniture, pillows and rugs.  I had a big pile of trash out on the curb, some things set aside

Time for a reset & second chances

So, after reading all of the opinions I solicited about my family room, I wrote a post about my thoughts and plans.  The post turned into a rather disjointed mess-of-a-conversation with myself about the room and the direction I’m heading.  I went to sleep thinking about rugs and fabrics and paint colors and furniture arrangements.  I woke up this morning and started rolling up rugs and stared at the room with my head cocked slightly at an angle, thumb on my chin, pointer finger resting on my nose, tapping occasionally as I lulled around the space.  I then realized a couple of things… First of all, I need to just step away from the room for a few days, which I am fortunately doing.  My husband and I are taking a mini-vacation to Charlottesville, VA for some hiking, good food and to tour Monticello and walk around the beautiful UVA
