Before and Afters

Untitled-1

As the year is winding down, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the best things that happened in 2011.  Today, I’m going to share my favorite projects we tackled in our home.  I did a lot of projects and makeovers, but I sold most of them, so I really enjoy projects I get to do in my own home.  We’re almost done with two that have been a long time in the making, but until those are finished, my favorite makeovers happened in the kitchen and family room. I was itching to paint these cabinets from the day we bought this house five years ago.  It was a happy day when I finally got the “thumbs-up” from hubby and the courage to tackle the 52 cabinet doors. …and what a difference.  It was totally worth all of the hard work.     I also love the changes we made in

Untitled-1

I am in search for the perfect coffee table for the living room.  I want something interesting…maybe a skirted ottoman with curvy legs or something on wheels.  Whatever it is, I haven’t found it yet.  I’ve had this round side table in the room for a few months and really liked it there, but it was even more perfect for my family room, so I was left with a hole in the living room.  (This is a constant problem for frequent furniture re-arrangers like myself.) So, I hauled in the cedar chest that was used to store a train set in my family room and tried it in front of the sofa.  Hmm…the scale of the piece is right, but the orange color wasn’t working.  I know you’ll just die of shock when you see what I did next…     …you know me so well.  Yes, I painted it.

the reno that won’t end…ever

This bathroom renovation has just about bested me.  We’ve been working on it since…oh…January.  If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably remembered when I entered my half bathroom in a DIY Disaster contest by True Value.  Well, your votes made me the winner.  Here’s what the bathroom looked like when I submitted it for the contest.     (Before pictures always look worse when a toddler’s pajama shirt is strewn on the floor.)  This post might refresh your memory about the window to nowhere, the ballet bar, the pink plastic tile, the faucet that was installed incorrectly, the sink that was falling off the wall, the sticky black tiles… Is this ringing a bell? There are dozens of reasons why it’s taken us so long to get this done.  We had to wait for the tile, then wait for it to be installed, then wait for

the “grass sofa” – before & after

Remember this?  This is one of those pieces that people like me have nightmares about.  The dresser that is so saturated with smoke that it needs a bath in bleach.  The upholstered chair that was used as a dog bed…and then a cozy nest for a mouse.  Or the sofa that was stuffed with dried grass.  When I opened this one up, I know I was in way over my head and needed to call in reinforcements.  “Ummm…Ruthie…I need help.  Quickly.”   Ruthie swooped in and saved me (and this settee.)  Before she came to pick it up, I stripped the fabric away from the frame and painted it in ASCP Louis Blue with Old White and gold leaf detail.  I then distressed and waxed it. Ruthie took it from there.  She removed all of the contents of the settee, including pounds of dried grass, a plastic feed sack, cardboard box pieces and an

barrel-back chairs

I bought these chairs back in January from an estate furniture shop.  I loved the shape and, while the upholstery was done well, the fabric was not my thing.  I intended to upholster them myself, but once Ruthie came into my life all of that changed.  I turned over every upholstered piece I had in my queue, including this pair of barrel-back French chairs. I painted the frames in ASCP Old White (unwaxed) and distressed it with a sanding sponge before putting them in Ruthie’s capable hands.  She found a super heavy duty fabric that looks like burlap, but feels nice and will wear much better.  It was also a nicer fabric for her to work with and it doesn’t stink or shed like burlap.     These chairs look classy, now.   I got so used to doing everything myself, that it’s still feels funny to turn a piece over

{swiss miss}

I always hate the anticipation of having to drag a piece of furniture up my basement steps, rearrange my dining room and set up a photo shoot, but I am always so happy when I take the time and effort to do it.  This is my latest dresser makeover, that is going to be the “pop of color” in my room for the Lucketts holiday open house.  I’ve been calling her the “Swiss Miss”, for obvious reasons. I found this dresser at the same shop where I found the cola cooler.  It needed a little bit of repair on the drawers, but was in nice condition otherwise.  The wood is a beautiful bird’s eye and I fancy these empire-shaped dressers.  (It did have all of the the drawers, I just snapped a quick picture with my phone before I painted it.) I sanded down the top (the old finish was

chalkboard armoire & princess dresser

Another day of making ornaments has come and gone.  My entire house is dusted in glitter and littered with shreds of paper.  Sigh.  So, since I’m stuck in monotony at the moment, I thought I would share two other new pieces of furniture I worked on last week and dropped off at Lucketts. This armoire had been in my office for a couple of years, but it was replaced in my recent makeover.  I couldn’t just let a good vintage armoire go to waste, so I gave it a new life. I decided to paint the entire piece in black chalkboard paint.  I think it could work in a kid’s room, kitchen, craft room, play room, family room…lots of options.  The other piece, which actually already sold, is this princess dresser.  It wasn’t bad, but the paint finish was very tired, so I stripped the top and painted the base in ASCP
