Painting & Refinishing

Painting & Refinishing

Removing Paint Pt 1 – A Video Tutorial

I remember the first piece of furniture I purchased at a yard sale to refinish.  It was a small 1950’s highboy that I scored for $10.  I slid it into the backseat of my car and couldn’t wait to get it home to test out my DIY skills.  I had never refinished a piece of furniture, but I was pretty confident I could figure it out.  We lived in a tiny apartment, so I lugged the dresser onto our porch and started to work.  It had a dark finish on it, so I decided to sand it all off.  Well, after about 2 hours of working with a palm sander, the finish was gone, my arms were vibrating and I was covered in dust.  It was glorious and I was hooked.  That dresser had five different looks while in my possession until I sold it a few years ago.  (I

Trickery | Vaseline Resist Technique

Well, I received another oh-crap-call from Lucketts on Saturday.  The Painted Empire dresser sold the day after I brought it in.   I guess I wasn’t the only one in love with that finish!  Here’s how I did it… I’ve heard about using Vaseline (petroleum jelly) as a paint resist for a while, but I never tried it.  On this empire dresser, I pictured layers of blue and wanted to have clear definition between the two colors.  This seemed like a good piece to test it out on.  I painted the first coat of paint in Flow Blue with the bonding agent added to all of the paint except for what I used on the drawers (I wanted some selective chippiness.)  I then rubbed some Vaseline over the edges of the piece and around some of the key holes and other random spots.   I don’t think there’s a specific

Making an “Antique” Sign

I must apologize!  I posted a teaser about this sign I made for Cottages & Bungalows and said I would post the tutorial after the issue was off newsstands.  Well…that was in August, so I think it’s safe to say that those issues have been pulled.  So, at long last, here it is… What you’ll need: 12” wide pine board cut to desired length Acrylic craft paint (at least three colors) 2 ½” sash brush 1” artist brush, 1.0 liner brush, ½” angled shader Computer Printer and printer paper Scissors Tape Graphite transfer paper Ballpoint pen 80 grit sand paper Dark brown soft furniture wax Round brush or cotton cloth Clean cotton cloth Drill with driver bits Tape measure or ruler 2 D-ring hangers Hammer and nails   How to do it: Cut a piece of 12” wide pine board to desired length or use a piece of scrap lumber.

French Chair Makeover & White Wash Tutorial

Before I show these chairs, I am letting you know that I am selling them.  Yes, they are cane chairs and they are beautifully Frenchy, but I’ve recently made room for two pairs of French chairs and I just can’t make room for a third.  Now it’s out there and you can hold me to it!  (It’s tough for me.)   This pair of chairs have a beautiful shape, but a finish that wasn’t quite right for my taste.   I painted the pair in Shutter Gray Milk Paint followed by a wash of Ironstone and one coat of Furniture Wax.  The wash brings out the details of the piece and softens the finish to give it a soft, aged look.     It’s a subtle finish, but makes a big difference, especially on a piece with lots of detail.   Here’s my latest video tutorial to show how simple

bonding agent video tutorial

I show in my latest “Boxwood Dresser” how Milk Paint can look when the bonding agent is added and it’s not distressed.  As you can see, a beautiful finish can be achieved (without using a separate primer coat!)   Here’s how…   More videos to come…

Getting Milk Paint Super Smooth…

This week seems to be all about me being in front of the camera. I’m making video tutorials for my milk paint line, videos for the enhanced e-book version of my book (coming out in November), AND I have a camera crew coming to my house tomorrow to do some filming for a special project.  I’m still sporting the curly hair and it’s been a little unruly on camera, but I’m going with it!  (Actually, I think you’ll have to wait for the next video to see the curls.  I’m wearing pigtails in this one.)  Anyway, it’s been a bit of a change for me to wear lipstick in my workshop. So, in this video I share tips on mixing milk paint with a blender.  I think one of the toughest things for people to get used to when using milk paint for the first time is the texture. When

Hemp Oil Video Tutorial

I’m still working on all of my video tutorials for the Milk Paint website.  Actually, this will be an ongoing project as I share new techniques and creative ways to use Milk Paint and the companion products, but I’m getting ahead of myself.  Today I’m sharing about Hemp Oil, the top coat sold with my line as an alternative to wax.   So, what is Hemp Oil?  It’s an all natural oil that contains no VOCs and no petrochemicals.  It can be used on raw wood to seal and protect it, on old wood to revive it or on porous painted surfaces as a topcoat.  I used it on the interiors of the drawers on my Linen dresser…   It’s so easy to apply.  You just dampen a clean cloth with the hemp oil and rub it on.  That’s it.  You don’t have to worry about streaks or brushstrokes or
