thrifting in PA

My mom and I went out to a local antique shop and thrift shop on Thursday and it felt so good to be hanging out with her in some of my old haunts.  Before we get into thrifting and what I bought, I wanted to clear something up.   When I shared my shopping adventures on Instagram, a few people were deterring me from buying anything.  “You just downsized!”  “Wait until you have a house!” Very valid points except for two things. One – I didn’t downsize our belongings because we are planning to downsize our house (although we might.)  I was downsizing because of the cost of moving and storage.  I didn’t want to pay to move and store something that would be more cost-effective to sell and replace on the other end of the country.  We wanted to move pieces that we really loved, that were easy to pack

antique French architecture portfolios

Yesterday, I scored two amazing finds – a pair of antique architecture portfolios by Wulliam & Farge of Paris.  Here’s how that came about…  As we were planning some afternoon outing options while visiting my parents we talked about hitting our favorite ice cream shop, visiting a couple of antique shops, going to the battlefield, and, of course, the topic of bookstores came up.  My mom shared that there is a used bookstore in an old house in Cashtown, PA that I might want to check out.  I looked up their website because used bookstores can be a total bust for me depending on what kind of books the shop owner curates.  If he/she curates a bunch of paperback novels, that’s not going to appeal to me.  But, I saw on their website that Rock Top Bookshop & Bindery specializes in books on history, war, cooking, gardening, design, architecture, art,

antique baby shoes | favorite things

One of the first things I bought when I meandered into an antique store as a young adult was a thin, cream cotton baby bonnet.  I really couldn’t tell you why I bought it other than I felt drawn to it and it was cheap (meaning it was something I could afford!)  I’ve always found it a little funny that I’m so attracted to antique baby things given that I’m not a “baby person.”  I’m not one to seek out the baby in the room to make sure I get to hold her.  But give me all of the antique baby dresses, Christening gowns, high chairs, rocking horses, silver rattles, and tiny leather baby shoes.  I find these items to be so full of hope and story and whether I buy them or not, I am always drawn to admire and coo over them. That’s why I like to use

one last trip to Stillwater

Going on a day trip while hobbling around with a broken foot isn’t what I would normally plan, but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to check out the antique stores and my favorite used book store in Stillwater, MN while spending some good time with my dear friend and antiquing buddy, Cheri.  Cheri was also dealing with a bum knee, so we limped around the town together and really had a wonderful time browsing.  The weather was perfect and we even scored a nice parking spot. We hit Blackletter books first.  I first went to this bookstore when Jeff took me to Stillwater last October.  This store is just wonderful for the kind of books I like because the art book section is huge!  In the past, I would camp out on the floor and look through each book until I was satisfied that I had all of the

decorating books I kept with me

As I was packing away my , I knew I wanted to keep a few out to read, study, and look to for inspiration and ideas for our next house.  In case you missed it, we sold our house in Minnesota and we’re moving back to the east coast.  (You can read about that HERE.) We don’t know where exactly, yet, but we are moving to be closer to our parents, who are split between Raleigh, NC and Gettysburg, PA.  So, we’re looking to settle somewhere between the two. Jeff is still looking for his next position in ministry and we will buy a house once he finds the place he feels called to.  Until then, I’m just dreaming about what our next house might be and thinking about the kind of pieces I’d want to put on my wishlist to furnish that new home.  We sold over half of

purchases for our imaginary future house…

If you get it, you get it.  One of the most exciting things about moving for people like me is anticipating what the next house will be.  I’ve been this way since I was in 6th grade when we moved back to the states and I was going to live in an actual house (not a military-issued apartment), I began to draw out plans for a room I hadn’t even seen yet.  I thought about wall colors, curtains, furniture arrangement possibilities, and how I would want to style my shelves.  I did this with every single move since… dreaming, planning, and sketching.  I do this even when I don’t know what the room or house looks like, yet!  It’s just an intuitive process based on gut-instinct and intangible wishes. In thinking about what our future home might look like, I have that gut instinct.  I don’t know what the house

touch-up paint therapy

Painting in some form or another has always been therapeutic for me.  It was a creative outlet when we lived in my in-laws’ basement while Jeff finished his degree.  It was transformative; a way to put my personal touch on every surface of the three homes we’ve owned over the years.  It was a task that could be completed amid a never-ending routine of monotonous household chores.  It was quiet and slow late-night time alone after a busy day with young boys.  It’s been a place of personal growth and development.  It’s been my go-to for over a decade when I want to create and think.  It’s the perfect mix of productivity and meditation. For this reason, a painting task I procrastinated on through the move turned out to be a gift. One thing that had been on the to-do list before we closed on our house was touching up

tips on getting a house ready to sell

As you know, we recently listed and sold our house.  Of course, I took pictures along the way and thought I would share some tips on getting a house ready to sell.  I’m not sharing tips on how to sell your house quickly or get multiple offers in 24 hours.  Articles like that drive me nuts because they are so misleading.  The speed at which you sell your house and the price you get are so dependent on the market, location, desirability of your home in that market, etc. Yes, we did put a lot of work into the house and it did sell quickly, but that has a lot to do with the hot housing market and location.  Our improvements and home styling were the icing on the cake and may have helped the house stand out and receive a stronger contract.  But, we lived in our PA house
