1970 home renovation

trellis inspiration

A little over a week ago, I shared some of our spring project plans and I thought I would flesh one of those ideas out a bit more.  Specifically, let’s take a look at some trellis inspiration ideas I’m considering for the blank wall of siding on the front of the house.  This year will likely involve prepping the beds and planting, but I’m not sure if building a trellis will get on the spring to-do list this year.  I know I want some sort of vertical, wall-covering element so I would want to keep that in mind with any prepping and planting we start. Here is how the house looked in the early fall, shortly after we finished painting the front.  We painted the shutters, siding, and trim and, prior to that, had a new roof installed.  All of that work has boosted the curb appeal of the house,

things I miss about our MN house

When we bought our home in Minnesota, we knew it was a great house with good bones, but if you told me I would think about it and miss it with some regularity, I’m not sure I would’ve believed you.  There are things I’ve loved about all of our homes, but the house in Minnesota is probably the nicest home we’ll ever live in.  Maybe not our favorite (that is yet to be determined), but the nicest.  It was big, and bright, with a very smart floor plan.  It was the perfect house for us in that season.  And, it was a prime candidate to customize to flesh out those bones a bit more. Now that we’ve lived in our current home for over a year and we’ve been working through renovation projects, I find myself thinking a lot about our previous home and the things I miss most.  I

kitchen garden inspiration

We’ll be starting our spring yard clean-up soon and I’m already excited to work on some of the blank spaces we cleared last year and continue pruning, shaping, trimming, and pulling things that are a little out of control.  I’m also excited about some of the ideas we have for the future and one of those is a kitchen/cutting garden outside of our side door.  This is the entrance everyone uses since it’s off the driveway and we’d like to make it look a bit more charming and less utilitarian.  Last year, we painted the trim, shutters, garage door, and cellar doors.  We also added new lights and made the kitchen window larger.  Very late in the season, I planted some Japanese holly bushes and liriope in the beds and I’ll some more to that this spring. We would eventually like to build a small portico and make the stoop

unlacquered brass kitchen faucet update

As we use our newly renovated kitchen more and more, I want to provide some updates along the way.  I know I still need to share a full tour of the cabinets and how we have it all organized, so that is on my list.  I’ll likely make a video showing a complete look at the before and after of the space and then a tour of the cabinets so you can get a true sense of the space.  I know still images and drawings don’t always give a complete picture.  Anyway, in today’s post, I want to share an update on our handmade unlacquered brass faucet. I had my heart set on a brass bridge faucet to compliment the Edwardian feel I was going for.  I reviewed a lot of different options from name-brand faucets that were over $1,000 to used faucets on eBay to handmade faucets from Morocco.

the reality of hooks by the door

So often, when we see hooks by the door in magazines and online, the contents of those hooks are very neatly curated.  Only the very cutest jackets, aprons, and bags will be displayed along with the trendiest shoes tucked underneath.  I do that myself when I’m working on a styled shoot.  A pile of Crocs and a mass of mismatched coats aren’t inspirational.  We can look at our own hooks by our own doors and see that.  But, I always think it’s nice to balance the practical with the pretty and the real with the styled. When I decided to put hooks by the side door, I knew it would be a magnet for clutter.  At the same time, I knew it would be practical.  You need a handy place to keep coats in the winter, drop a bag, and hang the dog leash.  And most people want to do

favorite things | antique overshot coverlets

As I’ve been sharing our living room makeover over the past few weeks, several people have asked about the blanket over the back of the sofa.  Even though it sometimes annoys my family, I’ve always liked having a quilt, coverlet, or throw folded over the back of sofas and chairs.  Not only does it add a bit of color and give me another place to display some of my favorite antique textiles, but it helps extend the life of the piece of furniture (or the slipcover between washings.)  The blanket on the back of our living room sofa is sadly not something that I can simply link to.  It’s an antique overshot coverlet from the mid-1800s.  But, since you may have never heard of any overshot coverlets, let me tell you a bit about them, share some tips on where to buy them (and how much to pay), and give

living room lamp remote

When I shared the new wall sconces/lamps in our living room, the thing I was asked most was about turning them on and off.  With a deep sofa sitting in front of them, they are a little awkward to reach.  You have to do one of those knee-on-the-sofa maneuvers, which can be tricky at times.  But, I wasn’t worried about it because I have a trick in the bag that I’ve used with difficult-to-reach lamps before.  It’s cheap, it’s easy to install, and it works.  It’s a battery-powered light remote. details about the sofa | curtains | European stag antlers | wall color | lamps There are available that will tie into a smart lighting system and allow you to turn lights (and other things) on and off with your phone.  We had those in our last house and, I must say, I do miss them!  But, we haven’t installed any smart

card room green living room | the “dresser corner”

Yesterday, I finally finished putting the living room back together after painting the room Card Room Green in November.  As I started arranging the plates and antlers on the wall over the dresser in the corner, I wondered why it took us so long!  Did I really procrastinate that much?  Then, I remembered we put the Christmas tree in that corner and made the decision to not hang things on the wall until we took the tree down.  And then I involuntarily started playing virus Bingo.  If I get Flu B or RSV, I’ll complete a row on my card.  Anyway, it felt good to get something done and bring the newly painted room to life a bit more. Here is how that corner looked before the room was painted… And here is how it looks against the Card Room Green… For me, this is a case where both wall
