decorating dilemma | massive, masculine furniture

Leigha has been a thrifter her entire life.  The talent to find a good deal was used to furnish her home and she eventually sold her finds out of two booths at antique malls.  She’s recently been honing her style and realizes that “her home no longer speaks to her.”  While Leigha’s ready to sell it all and start over, the fact that she has a busy life (works as a librarian, married to a firefighter, three boys), it’s a little more than impractical. She would really like to make her bedroom a haven, though.  A place she really loves. Right now, there are only two things she likes in the space…the pictures of her boys (not the thrifted leopard frames) and the tall secretary her parents gave her.  That’s it. Leigha wants a lighter, brighter, cozy space.  She wants to move away from the heavy, masculine furniture.  She loves green, crocheted cream

decorating dilemma | wonky windows & neutral blahs

In this decorating dilemma post, we’re actually dealing with two issues… I know the first one is very common…  getting stuck in the world of neutral blahs.  We’ll circle back to that one in a minute. The second dilemma is a less common, but I’m sure many of you can still relate.  I know I can! You look at a home and fall in love with the cathedral ceilings and the alcove with the arched window.  And then you move in and get settled and realize you have absolutely no clue how you’re going to make window treatments work in that space.  A space that is so unique that you can’t buy off-the-shelf window treatments for it.  So, you’re watching TV with a beam of sunlight coming through that beautiful arch right into your eyes. source unknown So, we’re going to address these two issues in Kim’s space today. Here

decorating dilemma | a wood stove

Once I wrote about working on Megan’s office, I started getting e-mails from readers who weren’t local, but really wanted some help with their spaces.  Sadly, I’ve had to tell them that’s not really my forte.  I once tried to do a virtual consultation and ended up throwing in the towel before I really got going. I feel like I need to stand in the space, see the homeowner’s style and what they have to work with in order to really be able to help them.  Of course, I can look at a picture and throw out some ideas, but what if it’s not functional for their family or it doesn’t work at all with their style?  Is that really valuable to them, then?  And, if it’s not valuable to them, is it even worth doing? But then, I was looking through the latest issue of Country Living magazine as I was hanging

Finding & Embracing Your Style

This post is about style.  Your style.  Great style.  And how to figure out which is which.  Do you find that you love transitional  beach modern French bohemian country shabby chic log cabin Edwardian cottage junk style?  Do you get your home set in one style and then a magazine or blog will sway you in an entirely different direction?  Do you feel like your style is a moving target?  You’re not alone.  You’re not suffering from IDSPD (Interior Design Split Personality Disorder.)  It’s ok to love a lot of styles.  Here’s the important question you have to ask yourself: Do you love this style or do you love this style for your home?  That’s a very important question.  As decorating fanatics, we all appreciate great design and chic style, but we don’t have to use it all in our homes and we don’t have to use it all together

Resetting a Room

Have you been working on a room and you’re feeling stuck or it’s not looking the way you envisioned?  If so, it’s time to press the reset button and here’s how I do it.  I’ve been working on my living room for a few months, now.  When I was looking at it the other day, I realized it’s not turning out the way I wanted it to.  It is mostly, but once I added two of the curtain panels, it totally messed me up.  I had been decorating for a pretty neutral room and the pop of color and pattern from the curtain fabric began to compete with all of the pictures and accessories.  Step 1: Remove all of the pictures, accessories, and anything else from the room that you’re not sure about.  Only keep what you really love or need.  This is a great time to move some furniture around

Ask Miss Mustard Seed – Decorating a Small Space

“How do you paint/decorate to open up a small room? All of our bedrooms are very tiny (10×12 or smaller) and so it just feels very smushed. The kids are little, so their rooms have lots of toys plus beds, and then my bedroom is super tiny and squished. I just want a refined look that makes the room not look so claustrophobic 😉 Any tips?” I grew up in military housing and our family of four lived in a 900 square foot apartment.  I currently live in a house that was built in the 1940’s, so most of my rooms are pretty small and the upstairs rooms have angled ceilings and dormers.  Basically, I’ve never lived in a huge home, so I feel your pain.  (By the way, don’t you all love it when you read about a 3500 square foot “small” home in a magazine!?  That’s huge!  It
