How does a commissioned pet portrait work?

We will work together on selecting a photo of your pet and discuss things like background color and other elements to make sure I capture your pet’s personality and create a painting that looks beautiful in your home.

Prices include the finished painting and free shipping in the US.  If you would like a piece framed in a vintage/antique frame from my stash, there would be an additional cost.  Paintings that include more than one subject may also increase the cost.   Payment is due when the painting is completed and prior to shipping.  I will send a PayPal invoice to collect payment.  You can pay securely with a credit card or use your PayPal account if you have one.

8 x 10 – $300

9 x 12 – $400

11 x 14 – $550

12 x 16 – $700

16 x 20 – $850

* email marian@missmustardseed to request a quote for paintings larger than 16 x 20.

Each painting is done in original oils on board (a wooden board prepped with two coats of professional gesso) and is finished with a coat of Gamvar Gloss varnish to protect the painting and add an even luster.  Sizes over 11 x 14 are usually painted on cradle board (1/4 plywood with a frame backing for support). Your painting will be dry when you receive it and can be framed (without glass) and hung, but will continue to cure for several months.

I paint 4-5 commissions each week, so depending on the number of inquiries in my queue, it might take a few weeks until I start working on your painting. If the painting is time-sensitive, let me know. If you would like to move forward, send an email to marian@missmustardseed.com with reference photos and the size you are considering.

Once we have your commission details confirmed, you will be added to the queue.  When I work on your painting, I’ll send an email with pictures of the painting for your approval.  At that point, adjustments can be made at your request.  Once you’re happy with the painting, I’ll send along the invoice, and the painting will ship in about a week.

I ship small paintings via USPS and larger works via UPS.  You will receive a confirmation with tracking and insurance information when your painting ships.

  • Take the photo in natural light.  This can be outside or next to a window.
  • Contrast between the light & shadows is great for paintings.
  • Get at eye level with your pet
  • If you’re using an iPhone camera, the lens will distort your pet’s face if you’re too close.  Take a step back and zoom in to minimize distortion.  For dogs, it can be helpful to have one person handling the dog and another taking the photo.
  • Include the entire body in the shot.  Make sure you’re not cutting off feet, ends of tails, etc.  I can always crop if you want a portrait-style painting, but I can’t make up what’s out of the frame.
  • Don’t edit or use a filter on the images.
  • Send the highest-resolution photo you have.
  • If your pet has passed away (first, sorry), then we will work with the best you have!
Disclosure

I will photograph the painting, though, for my portfolio to share on my website and social media.  I will not make your commissioned paintings available as prints without your written permission.
