After not writing for over a week, I feel like there is so much to write that I don’t even know where to start.  Really, I’ve been sitting here for about an hour… writing something, getting distracted, strolling Instagram, coming back to the post, deleting it, starting again.  It’s silly.  I think I’m just feeling a little rusty and I need to gather my thoughts.  So, I’ll get a blank piece of paper and do that.  Until then, I’m just going to share about the painting I did.  Well, some of it.  I sort of went on a tear.  And it involved Stonington Gray, as the title suggested.

As I’ve mentioned before, and I’m sure you have experienced, decorating is like dominos.  A new mattress leads to a new bed frame (we got this one on clearance from Arhaus), which leads to painting a wall before the bed frame and mattress are delivered, which leads to rearranging nightstands, which leads to replacing lampshades that were crumpled in the move.  You know what I’m talking about.

So, this is how the master bedroom was looking…

I knew I was going to paint the walls, but I did a ton of painting when we first moved in and I needed a break.  Getting the new bed gave me a good excuse to prod me along again.

I shared HERE the colors I was considering…

I ended up going with Stonington Gray (Benjamin Moore) and I’m so glad I did.  I now want to paint everything in Stonington Gray.  Not really, but it is lovely and perfect for the room and I think I will use it in other places.

So pretty, right?!  I am so in love with it and how the room is coming along.

Stonington Gray looks very blue in my room, but if you look it up on Pinterest, you’ll see it can be a chameleon – looking more gray in some rooms and more blue in others. It falls on just the right side of that fence for the fabric I picked, the bed frame, and even the beige carpet seems to look better.

This room was a beast to paint.  It is big, for starters, and everything required two coats.  So, I broke the room up into sections and, in very un-Marian-like fashion, patiently chipped away at it over five days.

Jeff also helped me hang the new curtain rod.  It was a little anti-climatic, since I had to clip up the old curtains for privacy, but it’s good incentive to get the new curtains made, along with a bolster pillow for the bed.

And, speaking of the bed, it is so comfortable and heavenly.  (You can read a non-sponsored review on our Sleep Number mattress HERE.)

I have thoroughly enjoyed sinking into it each night and lingering in the morning.

Of course, it’ll be even nicer when the room no longer smells like paint!

I love the paint color and the new bed! Happy New Year!

    3. Brenda

I love the new bed! Probably not as much as you do, though. 😉 The new curtains will be gorgeous. I know you’ve told us the fabric name, but I can’t remember. I know you’ve been writing about adding a bed crown and I love them. It might have something to do with having one. You are going to have so much fun putting it all together! I can’t wait to see the finish!

    4. Caro

Wow! Now you’ve got me wondering about painting everything Stonington Gray, too. It’s like the perfect bedroom color – blue without being bossy. Love it.

    5. Mary in VA

The Stonington Grey brought new life to the room. What a dramatic change! Can’t wait to see the curtains. I’ve been thinking more about the bed crown and honestly in the new fabric it’d look awesome. Go for it, girl! It’s your beautiful home, make it look exactly like *you!

    6. Jennifer

It looks wonderful! Have you considered painting the ceiling a mixed-down version of the same color?

    7. Elizabeth

Lovely room! You may have mentioned previously and I missed it but where is the chaise from? I’m looking for one to put in my master. Thanks!!!

What brand mattress did you go with? We are in the market. Something I HATE shopping for LOL!! Love the paint color!

We went with a Sleep Number bed, since it can accommodate our very different preferences (Jeff is set at 100 and I’m at 30!) It is a sponsorship, so I will have a review soon. It’s definitely worth checking out!

    9. Lily

So pretty. Very much worth the time it took. Lovely.

    10. Vickie

Oh Happy New Year indeed! I LOVE the room color. Those drapes though….they have to go…and quickly, please! Just kidding. I know you have lots to do…and you’ll run rings around the rest of us doing it. I hope your 2018 is exactly what you want it to be. Hugs from Texas!

Oh gosh, I know! I can’t wait to get those curtains made!!

    11. Julie

I just cannot believe how much the paint color changes the master bedroom! Amazing. It looks so fresh and bright, and before it looked dull and old. 🙂 Love the color.

    12. Dianne

      Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!

    13. Mary S

Beautiful!! That bed is stunning and I can’t wait to see the curtains. I’m not a “blue” person but I believe I could live with this color very easily. Well done, as usual!!

Since Stonington, Ct. is near and dear to my heart I will keep it in mind.
Everything looks lovely and can’t wait to see your bells and whistles.

And so glad you are back. I missed your daily emails.

    15. Vanessa

I love the new color! I’ve been considering it for my living areas, but am concerned it will read too icy in rooms that tend to be dark due to our heavy tree canopy. I think you’ve said that your new home affords you lots of natural light. I have a very similar bed, it was my one big furniture spurge a few years ago during a major renovation and addition project. I love it and have not regretted it one moment,

A quick question about your chandelier. I’ve recently purchased two similar vintage lights. The finishes have dulled over the years and even a good cleaning don’t have the pizazz that yours do. Did you do restoration work on yours?

    16. carolyn kellam

Simply beautiful! Hope this year is filled with all good things for you!

    17. Norma Rolader

Love the bed and the color you have chosen coming together

    18. PC

I love that color -may have to test it out. I suspect it will be more gray in our sunshine. The bed is beautiful.

    19. Michele

      Hi Marian,
It looks so beautiful. Do you mind if I ask, what kind of camera do you use? Your photos seem so crisp, and color perfect. Looking to purchase.

    20. Robbie Zeller

      What a lovely restful spot!

    21. Diane Ruebel

Welcome back with your inspiring bedroom post. May you rest well in your gorgeous new room in 2018!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, MARIAN! Love the color you decided on for your Master Bedroom. Those Sleep Number beds are just “the best”!

    23. Marlene Stephenson

The bed is a dream, and love the paint.

    24. Jamie

Happy New Year! The Stonington Grey looks just perfect in your room. Cannot wait to see how the blue fabrics look against it. You will love the select comfort bed, we switched over 10 years ago and will never buy a regular mattress again. Wishing you and yours all the best for 2018!

    25. Janet in Kansas City

This wall color is so perfect, soft and beautiful. Looking at the samples you painted, I would have chosen the wrong color. You always manage to get it right. Missed your posts over the holidays.

    26. Kay

I miss listening to your family Christmas song this year. I look forward to that each year.

    27. Cindy Jones

Love the Stonington Grey in our master bedroom. It looks great with the linen bed frame and does a great job of reducing the yellow in the beige carpet. Looks much more greige.

    28. Anne

Hi Marian, In our newly built home I used Stonington grey in 3 rooms and on all 3 bathroom vanities…another color I used is Benjamin Moore Whitestone…as beautiful and understated as Stonington…these colors look classic and soft next to all my mouldings, board & batten walls …custom built in hutch and plate rack as well as built in cabinetry sourrounding the fireplace which are all painted B.Moore decorater’s white…I am as happy as you with these beautiful colors…glad you are back in the blogging loop ! Happy New Year to you and your family…

    29. Elizabeth

That bedroom is perfection! ! Love the Stonington Gray and that bed is beyond beautiful! Anxious to hear about the Sleep Number bed. We are in the early planning stages and it is the bed my hubby is interested in.

Also, could you please tell us again, who is your bed made by? Thank you!

      • Marian Parsons

The bed is from Arhaus, but I bought it on final clearance for about 70% off and it’s sold out. The queen size was still available last I checked, though.

    30. Rachel Mora

Love love love everything!!!! Bravo!!! You hit a home run on this one!!!! Can’t wait to see it finished!!!

    31. Jody K

Love the room! Love, love the bed! So serene. And the chaise looks perfect there. I have an almost identical one in a sunny corner of my living room. It’s a beast to climb in and out of gracefully, but love to read a good book or page through a magazine once I’m in it.

    32. Debra

Just perfect! What a before and after. The new color is so peaceful and restful. Just beautiful, and I really LOVE the bed!

    33. Elizabeth

Two coats? I admire your patience. The result is what counts, and yours is a doozy. Looking forward to enjoying more of the transformation of your MBR.

    34. MaryLisa Noyes

The bed is the start of your bedroom sanctuary! The color on the walls will be so soothing and compliment everything…the drapes will be the icing on the cake when you make them. I hope you do a tutorial on it. I would love the “how to”…..

    35. Marietta Lyons

I love this color… used it in my master bedroom as well as my Kitchen. Love your style?

    36. Shelley

Delightful! What is a lobster pillow? I don’t make a connection to sea animals in your style.

    37. Kim

After a year of mulling colors, I FINALLY chose Stonington Gray for our entry way, living room and dining room (now I need to choose complimentary colors for the kitchen (cherry cabinets) and family room – open to suggestions – it will take me at least a year to choose colors!). I am so happy to see how lovely the color looks in your room, I hope it looks as nice in our home. I am starting painting next week.

We have had a Sleep Number bed for years now, and it works as well as it did on day one. I LOVE it! I could never go back to a regular mattress.

    38. Sandra Boff

Ahhhhhh. So much nicer. It looks soothing. I would not reupholster the bed. Just add the color with fabric, furniture and art.

    39. Krista

It looks beautiful! What a difference!

    40. Deb

As so many others have commented, the Stonington on your walls is lovely! What is the color on your ceiling? I’m abroad for 4 more months and need to pick paint and carpet for the MBR of the farmhouse we’ll move into when we return to the US. Do you have a suggestion for paint & carpet that would look good with the Stonington? (Painter prefers Sherwin Williams paint, but he could surely match! A nice carpet will probably come from Lowe’s or Home Depot.) There are so many different whites, greys, greiges, it’s tough—especially when I can’t look at the “up close”.

    41. Anna

It’s so much prettier with Stonington Gray! When I had my decorating business and worked with painters, they all said “Without a minimum of two coats, you never get the depth of color and it’ll often ‘read’ wrong from the color chip.” I found that to be true too when doing my own painting. They also said the only way you can get away with one coat is if you’re just refreshing the same color (eg. Stonington Gray over Stonington Gray)

Can’t wait to see what else you do to the room.

    42. Cindy Redman

GAAAAAHHHH! It’s wonderful!!! How on earth could a wall color be so perfect with everything in there. You must totally be in love. … and your bed is to die! Now I want to paint everything Stonington Gray1

      Cindy

    43. Gabrielle

Love the colour Marian. The bed is just beautiful.

    44. Rebecca Neustel

It’s already looking lovely! Were you able to use that curtain rod anywhere else? It has that old world look that fits with your style.

    45. Naomi S.

That is a very nice grey color. Blue compliments it nicely, too. Marian, I was wondering the source for the striped chair with the attached “footstool” that you have in the bedroom. I need to replace a chair in my LR and that looks like it would be perfect with my grey couch. Right now, I have a club chair with a separate footstool and I get really annoyed with that footstool ending up being pushed all over the small sitting area. Partly because we have another footstool in that area too and when the kids move them around it really clogs up the space. Anyway, I’ve been looking for quite a while for a replacement for the old chair and footstool and just haven’t seen any thing quite right until I saw your striped chair.

    46. Susan Hill

I know this is an older post, but I love the fabric you chose. Could you provide the designer name and name of the fabric?

    47. Mary Colby

What is the name of the bed brand please. Love the whole room. Stunning !
