I shared my progress on the step-back cupboard yesterday and here it is all prettied up!

As a reminder, here is how it looked before.  Well, it had part of the first coat on the top, but this angle better shows what a mess it was!

My goal in giving it a makeover was not to make it look new, but to retain it’s age and charm and lose the pencil scribbles, grease spots, spray paint, and definitely the cobwebs and dirt.  It didn’t need an extreme makeover, but a little attention to bring out the beauty of the inset door panels, hardware and utilitarian shape.

Again, I painted it in a custom mix of two part Eulalie’s Sky to one part Layla’s Mint, both from the MMS Milk Paint line.  The back and inset panels were painted in Linen.  I finished it out in matte Tough Coat.

And isn’t this the greatest little chippy white stool?  I picked that up in the same shopping trip.

The cabinet and all of the accessories (except the plates) will be for sale at the Lucketts Spring Market in May.

Until then, I’m going to love on this piece in the studio…

      Hi Marian,
Have you chosen a theme for Lucketts? I really look forward to seeing all of the amazing finds you will share for Lucketts this year. You had so many beautiful things last year. I hope to be able to come one year. It is a definite on my bucket list. Also, have you ever gone to Round Top in Texas? That’s another place I would love to go to one year.

How do you know to call it a ‘step-back cupboard’? Why is it called that, and how did you find out?

Having bought and sold furniture for several years, I’ve just learned the names of the styles along the way! 🙂 It’s called a “step-back” cupboard, because the top steps-back from the bottom as opposed to being flush.

Do any of the old pieces you restore have an odor? And if so, what is the trick to removing:)
I’ve tried charcoal, outside for an entire summer to air out, primer and repainted…..

I love it! It turned out great. The white compote would look great in my collection!

Love it. I have a cabinet my husband made in a similar color. You can make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear Marian!

      What is Lucketts address?

This is adorable. Love these old built-ins. We’ve torn many out of old houses ourselves and made them free standing by adding backs to them. They are fun to paint and paint so well. I wish I had dozens of these. They are a great seller. Are you keeping or selling? It’ll be hard to part with. We have one in our kitchen.

      Love it!!

Love it! It’s funny how this works… when I saw the raw piece the broken drawer really bothered me. And now that it is painted, I don’t even see it! Just lovely!!

Love it! You find the greatest pieces. I wish I lived closer to Lucketts!!

Plain but definitely appealing! The colors are good on it. It made me remember the step-back cupboard that was a built-in in my grandparents’ kitchen when I was growing up. It was painted all white and instead of the drawers down the side it had two or three across the top of the bottom piece and doors below them. Wish I had it today.

Wish I could be there in May! Beautiful job on the cupboard. It’s wonderful to bring an old piece new life.

What a surprise to see that gorgeous springy blue! Unlike your usual more muted colors and it is just beautiful. There will be a stampede to get to it on opening day!
