season of giving | using social media for good

Even though it’s a big part of my business, I will admit to having a love/hate relationship with social media.  It can be impersonal, superficial, and downright ugly at times.  And, honestly, sometimes it’s just too much input from people who don’t really know you.  But, it can also be an amazing community…  A tribe of people connected through a common love or common struggle.  Connecting for support and friendship.  Joining together for a cause.

This is an opportunity to make those likes and comments mean something more than a drop in the social media bucket.  This is a chance to have those likes and comments become physical dollars to support charities and non-profit organizations that support individuals who are sick, suffering, struggling, and/or in need.

I have partnered with Balsam Hill and their Season of Giving campaign to raise money for a non-profit of my choosing – and I picked the Minnesota chapter of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund).

As I have shared before, my youngest son, Calvin, is a type 1 diabetic, so choosing the JDRF as the non-profit to support in this campaign was a no-brainer for me.  (You can read more details about Calvin’s life with diabetes HERE.)

(At his diagnosis, the JDRF gave us a backpack with information, encouragement, and a white teddy bear for Calvin.  The other bear was on loan from his older brother.)

I truly believe that a cure can be found in Calvin’s lifetime and the JDRF is committed to finding a cure as well as supporting families affected by diabetes and finding better treatment options until that cure is discovered.

(The boys at the JDRF One Walk a couple of years ago.)

So, what is your part in this?

We’re not asking for money.  Balsam Hill is going to do that part.  We’re asking for you to comment, like, and share.  Just do your social media thing and maybe even step it up a notch, since this time it can make a difference.

For every comment on THIS blog post, Balsam Hill will donate $2.00 to the Minnesota chapter of JDRF.

And then, you can do even more.  Head over to the Balsam Hill Facebook Page…they will donate $0.50 for every reaction/like, $1.00 for every comment, and $1.00 for every share.  (Just comment with the charity name you wish to support with your comment.  Shares and engagements will count towards the featured charity on that specific post.  The JDRF will be featured December 17-19, 2017, and I will post reminders.)

I’ll share more opportunities to support the Minnesota JDRF on their Facebook page as well as on mine and the Balsam Hill blog.

If you’ve never left a comment on this blog, today is a good day to leave your first one.  Just a few seconds, a few clicks of the keys, and your comment will equal $2.00 for the JDRF.  Just tell me Merry Christmas.  Tell me about someone you love who has T1D.  Tell me how social media is a love/hate thing for you, too.

Just leave a comment…

…and let’s support the JDRF as they give backpacks of information to frightened parents and teddy bears to kids who just found out needle sticks will be a part of every single day of the rest of their life.  Let’s support them as they advocate for families who cannot afford the insulin and equipment to keep their children alive, which can be hundreds of dollars each month, even with insurance.

And let’s support them as they search tirelessly to cure type one.

PS – This is not a sponsored post and I am not being compensated in any way for participating in this campaign.  I am doing it to support my son, the JDRF, and Balsam Hill’s generosity.

My son John, 14, was diagnosed at 18 months (2/05).

    45. Kristine

So awesome! Glad to comment for your cause!
I’ve followed your blog for years and was pleasantly surprised when you said you’d be moving to Rochester, as I’m a Twin Cities gal. I just saw your IG story on the brittle greenery-yup, it gets desperately dry here in winter and horridly humid all summer!
I’m very much a suburbia gal on the exterior but deep within I’m a lover of all things domestic, with a vintage farmhouse flair (not just because it’s trendy right now, either!). I very much admire your creative, get-things-done spirit! Merriest Christmas wishes to you and your fam!

    46. Katelyn

I am so happy to comment and help this great cause! Many of my family members are Type 2 diabetics and a few years ago my cousin’s young son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes in general is such a life changing disease that takes a great toll on a person’s body, but to watch a child experience has reiterated the desperate need for a cure! Thank you for all you are doing with this post, and of course, I love following along with all of your work here on your blog and on Instagram.

    47. Brocanteuserose

    55. Elizabeth Sadlack

As a type 1 diabetic, I too pray for a cure. May the Lord give knowledge to the people He has working on it & give peace & patience to those living with it & their families.

Also, welcome to MN! Our family moved from Northern Virginia last year to MN. I always enjoyed your items when I’d visit the store in Lucketts, so glad I get to keep on here too through CJC.

    79. Chris Moore of Seattle

      Merry Christmas!

    80. Laura

My 36 year old son has Type 1 and was diagnosed when he was 25. I hold on to hope that a cure will be found, but I despair that the drug lobby will allow a true cure to be implemented – there’s too much money at stake in insulin and diabetic supplies. However, thanks to efforts like this one, hope for a cure stays alive! Thank you, MMS, and thanks to Balsam Hill!

    81. Victoria

I was reading an article yesterday about the move to human trials for a vaccine for type 1. Only works before your cells are killed off but sounded promising.

    82. Jen C

Merry Christmas! And thanks to Balsam Hill for supporting a great cause.

    83. Becky

      Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

My husband has had Type 2 for 17 years. Knowing how he has struggled to take care of his diabetes without shots, I can imagine some of the difficulties children endure. What a blessing that Balsam Hill is giving so generously to such a good cause!

      Merry Christmas!

    103. Marilyn

Our daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 6 years old. It has not always been easy, but she is now 31 years old, married and has a beautiful 2 year old girl. When she was first diagnosed I heard that being first diagnosed with diabetes is like having a hippopotamus move into your living room. Everything revolves around it and it’s all you see and think about. But as time passes it just becomes part of your life. Then someone comes over and exclaims, ” you have a hippopotamus in your living room!” You realize, yes I do, but I don’t notice it’s there anymore.

    104. Sharon

A wonderful way to support the Minnesota JDRF

So happy to hear that Balsam Hill is giving back in this way!

    114. Elizabeth Flamm

What a great thing for Balsam Hill to do!

    115. Kristin Johnson

My husband Tyler is a Type 1 diabetic. He was diagnosed at age seven and has now had diabetes for 39 years. We need to find a cure! Diabetes effects so many different parts of the body…heart, brain, eyes, circulation, kidneys, liver…just to name a few. It weakens blood vessels making diabetics more susceptible to brain hemmorrhages. We just went through that in October. Thankfully he is doing well. He also has a stent in his heart. Diabetes takes such a dramatic toll on the body. My husband takes great care of himself and is in great control…but things still happen. My heart goes out to all diabetics and the families that love them. Thank you for doing this Miss Mustard Seed and Balsam Hill.

    116. Laura

What an amazing thing this is. Finding a cure and providing support and information in a families time of need makes all the difference. Thanks for sharing your story and for supporting an amazing cause

    158. Mary Jamieson

A corporate giving program that I can totally get behind! My husband is type 1 as well and his son has been since he was 5. Diabetes does not have to make your life worse, but if you have it, you must learn to adjust just a bit to live a full, healthy life. Good luck to your son! And, extra blessings to you, Mama!!

    159. Elena

Merry Christmas and thank you Balsam Hill!

    160. Patrics

Although we do not have children with diabetes we have friends who do and know how life changing and challenging this disease is. Fighting for a cure!

Fabulous cause! Let’s find the cure!

    200. Lori

God Bless you Marianne and your family. Our oldest son was diagnosed 15 years ago with type 1 diabetes. A day that we will never forget. It was scary for sure, but our son has done well keeping his A1C below the targeted level. If I may offer research autoimmunity and holistic/natural/integrative medicine. Type 1 diabetes has for some time been classified as an autoimmune disease. Once you start researching your beliefs in treatment for your son and health in general will change forever. And for the good. I live with multiple autoimmune diseases and my life has been changed for the better by believing God has provided all the green food we need!

    201. Susan

Sending prayers for a cure and prayers for your sweet boy.

I also have been wanted to write to you to thank you for the post on your Balsam Hill tree as few weeks back. I grew up with real trees and swore I would never have an artificial tree, but I had a similar experience to you last year and had to take our tree down the day after Christmas. After seeing your post, I bit the bullet and ordered a Balsam Hill Norway Spruce, it is just gorgeous and so realistic. It was easy to put together and I am finding it much less stressful to not have to constantly sweep up needles, check the water, etc. Again, many thanks, Merry Christmas!

    488. KWS

Hope they find a cure! I hate the way social media has changed the way people live. So many lives aren’t even really lived, they are just photo ops, going through the motions for a post. I went to a wedding that was obviously just a bunch of photo ops for facebook or snapchat or whaatever. The bride and groom weren’t really engaged with the people there they were just running to and fro for the next picture.

My daughter had a friend in dance that had juvenile diabetes. It is certainly a noble cause to give to. Although I do not use social media, I’m glad to leave a comment here, and to add JDRF to our consideration for donations this year. By the way, you boys are such the image of you, and just so adorable!

    665. Dana Wall

Wonderful!! You are so right about the social media, today I was looking through a FB marketplace for furniture and I was STUNNED to see so many people reaching out for help for their kids. Christmas Santas are in short supply here in NC. I responded to one poster that asked for help paying for your grand baby’s headstone of all things, her daughter is devastated and also cannot provide gifts for her other two boys (2 and 5) I called the memorial park to confirm that they did have an outstanding balance and am putting together forces to raise some money for this young family, so they can all rest easy. There are needs everywhere so it’s great to be able to help, especially little ones <3

    666. Linda

Wishing you & your family a Blessed Christmas in your new home & church!

    667. Kathy

My grandfather was a TID. He was diagnosed in his thirties after losing his sight completely, from diabetes. Due to my grandmothers amazing care for him, he lived until he was in his late 80s. He even won some awards for being one of Australia’s longest using TID of insulin, relying on it for more than 50 years.

Here’s to advocacy. It’s one way to keep social media upbeat (although that can sometimes get a little too passionate). I’ve thought about starting a blog and social media is one of my main deterrents.

After 46 years of going out to cut our own fresh tree, we said enough of carrying that big, heavy tree and tying it to the top of the car and invested in a Balsam Hill tree. It doesn’t smell as lovely as the real tree, but it looks so great that everyone has been convinced it’s the real thing.
      Good job Balsam Hill!

    812. Karen

      Thanks Balsam Hill. Merry Christmas!

My friend has been Type 1 diabetic since she was 6 years old. She is now 68 & is still fighting the battle. I am the most non-medical type person ever but am now learning to administer some of her medications into a PIC-line. (not sure of spelling.) I’m nervous but she’s willing to be my guinea pig! Merry Christmas to you all. Hoping & praying for a cure real soon.

    821. Barrie

Happy Holidays to you all. I too am using social media this Christmas to get the word out that I am collecting 500 pairs of socks for the homeless. As of today I’m at 371 pairs with the local brewery here in Excelsior, MN offering a free pint of beer to the person that donates 3 pairs of socks. I am humbled by the support in our tiny town. Good luck to you!!!!

    822. Angie

What a wonderful way to support a cause. I have a few friends who have type 2 diabetes and I know what havoc it caused in their lives. I can’t imagine being a child and diagnosed with type 1.

    823. Michelle

Merry Christmas to your family and the Balsam Hill families! We are praying for a cure!!

    838. Kristine

I too have Type 1 Diabetes and I’m 47 years old!! This disease affects more than just children and the public knows so little about it. People always assume adults have Type 2 Diabetes, so I just don’t tell anyone and choose to suffer in silence. I too hope a cure is found in your son’s lifetime. This disease affects the whole family and is a never-ending chore to maintain! Many blessings to you and your son…and thanks go Balsam Hill for their generous donations!

    839. Pat

Having a child with medical issues is a difficult road to travel. I send you good wishes. I hope and pray that a cure is on the horizon. Merry Christmas!

The JDRF backpack was amazing. We were absolutely terrified and the information they provided gave us some comfort. And my son still loves Rufus (the bear that was included).,

    867. Lin

A very good cause!! Thank you Balsam Hill and Merry Christmas to all!!!

    868. Patty

Thank you Marian and Balsam Hill for supporting T1D. There is so much publicity about type 2 and so little public info about type 1. The expense and constant vigilance involved in staying healthy can be overwhelming. Your support of Calvin shows that it can be done and thankfully progress is being made to make it easier but it is so expensive!
Thank you for sharing your challenge, it does help the cause.

    869. Margaret Langenberg

How wonderful that Balsam Hill is contributing for all the comments to this wonderful organization. There are so many people and families praying for a cure for TYPE 1 and hopefully with all of our help, it will happen in our lifetime. I have known so many people with TYPE 1 or their children and know first hand how hard it is for all involved and also financially draining for a lot of families. Merry Christmas to your family and enjoy your first Minnesota holiday season. I remember the kindness to my family when we traveled to the Morristown area in 1963 for my aunt’s funeral. My father was born near Detroit Lakes and moved back to Nebraska when he was almost 7. But I remember also the beauty of Minnesota.

    870. Sandra

Thank you, Balsam Hill, andbless you for your thoughtful generosity. My brother was diagnosed with type 1 in 1957. So many advances have been made since then, and I continue to pray for a cure.

1132. Ellie Sandler - Nest and Nook Vintage

My husband has Type 2 diabetes and even though I know it is different in many ways from T1, I still feel for you and the challenge it can be to keep your loved one healthy and safe. We’ve had several scares (DKA twice!) and visits to the hospital due to his and I can only imagine what it must be like for you with your sweet little boy. Much prayers and love to you, always! You’ll always be one of my most favorite bloggers and creative inspirations! I know you may not remember meeting me and Facetime-ing with me about becoming a blogger and several emails we exchanged as well, but it all meant so much to me and I am finally taking the plunge this new year and starting my own blog. So, as impersonal as social media can be (I totally agree… plus it intimidates me a little too!), it’s been a wonderful place to connect with a special person like yourself (one of my people) and to support you back in a way that means so very much to both our hearts! Merry Christmas and much love to your family! Ellie (of Nest and Nook Vintage)
