I have shared in the past that rugs are my nemesis when it comes to decorating.  It’s just so hard to find a rug that works with everything happening in a room.  I threw in the towel and had pretty much all jute and seagrass rugs in the house.  I love the look of them and I have found certain styles that feel comfortable underfoot, but the one that was in our bedroom was not one of those.  It was scratchy and rope-like and definitely not comfortable.  The problem was that I needed a large rug, 9 x 12, and it had to work with the fabric wall and I didn’t want to spend thousands on it.

I’ve been looking for a long time and haven’t found anything that I loved for a reasonable price.

When I was asked by Birch Lane if I would like to work with them on a room refresh, I immediately looked at their rugs.  My house is pretty much done, so I don’t have any rooms that need an overhaul, but a refresh?  Sure.  I’m always up for a refresh!

I browsed through the large area rugs and found itThe Marnie.

It has blues and neutrals and the traditional design compliments the fabric perfectly.  The browns in it even work with the woods in the room, which was a nice bonus.

I think when many of us think of a room refresh, we think of changing a lot of little things – like throw pillows, accessories, etc.  But a room refresh can also be one change that makes  a big impact, like this rug.  It added so much warmth literally and visually.  And, it’s a hooked wool rug, so it’s comfy underfoot.  I literally sprawled out on it as soon as we had it in place.  I hadn’t done that in our room for a couple of years!

In addition to the big change, I made one little change.  I added Junette Euro shams to the bed.  This is the kind of thing I would swap in and out depending on my mood.  I like how the shams add a warm neutral to the cool blue & white palette, which is nice for winter.

The thing that I love most about this rug is that I have these shades of blue all throughout my house, so I can move this rug around to other rooms if ever I want to make a change.  Area rugs are a big investment and selecting one with colors that can work in several different rooms is a great way to ensure longevity.

It’s staying in the bedroom for now, but who knows where it will end up down the road!

It matches so well! It looks like you picked the rug and every other element out at the same time. Rugs are my nemesis, too. My problem is I always buy the wrong size rug. Always. I always buy them too small. I’m slowly learning to always go a size bigger than I think/measure. Ugh. It’s been an expensive thing to learn!

Beautiful rug, Marion! It really pulls all the colors from around the room. I’m very curious, in your last picture, what color is the tall dresser and chair painted in? Is that a mix of MMS colors? Thanks!

I really like the rug and your mix of colors and patterns.

Great choice….the rug really coordinates well with all the blue and white in the room. Rugs are my nemesis too and I have the most difficult time picking one. I think I remember seeing a decorator on HGTV comment that they number one mistake most people make when buying a rug is that they under-size the rug for the room which makes the room appear smaller.

Love It! The pattern and colors are lovely!

What a beautiful addition to your room! I have to confess that I find your wallpaper absolutely swoon worthy. Would you consider sharing the manufacturer and name of that wallpaper? Great job on your refresh!

    13. Cheryl

i just discovered your blog a few months ago. Your decor has been an inspiration. I have an extensive collection of antique dishes. I am an antique dealer and I have been able to buy and sell as I please. I have two questions for you. You seem to have plates on a lot of the walls in several room in your home. How do you hang them securely? Are you able to change them out at will?

    15. Kathy

Perfect Marian! As if it was made precisely for you, congrats, and, as always, thanks for the inspiration.

    20. Inara

Absolutely beautiful! You do such a fabulous job!! Love the dog bed did you make it?? Thank you for the great inspiration as always!!

    21. Rhonda

Gorgeous!!! Oh…and where do you find extra large platter hangers????

    22. Elizabeth

What a beautiful rug. Wise choice. What would happen if you went with a solid or subtly textured wall treatment behind bed? Might it help the rug to shine even more?

    23. anne

      I agree! It’s perfect!!

    24. Summer

Perfection! Marian I love your style! I wish I could beam you down here to Macon, Georgia, so you could do my entire house for me!

    25. Lesley

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but I have to disagree with this choice. I feel it competes with the fabric wall treatment and drapes, making what should be a restful spot a busy, energetic one. And I like both options, just not together. I would have looked for a light tone with a blue stripe border, or the reverse, maybe.

      • Nancy

Yikes I agree with you, too. I can picture a dash and Albert swedish stripe. I feel like the drapes and wall are too similar to the pattern on the rug. I do think it’s a Marian rug, though…It’s got all your colors.

    26. B. Folk

      Beautiful rug, beautiful room:-)
