Office Light & Start 'em Young

What we thought would be a quiet Saturday at home ended up being a day full of comings and goings, hustle and bustle.  My parents came over to spend time with the boys, the boys had a friend over to play, we had a grocery store run, some other errands and got a few projects done.

My dad likes to tinker with things, so while he was over and just hanging out, I asked if he would install the light in the home office.

 And he obliged.

The light was hanging a little low for people 6’3″ or taller, so I unscrewed the finial off the bottom and will replace it with something that isn’t as long.  I’m not sure if it’s the 100% right fixture, but it’s so much better than what was there, it puts off more light and it was only $10 at a yard sale.

When the boys were getting a little restless, we put them to work building the Ikea stools we bought for an upcoming workshop and a MMSMP look book project.  My seven year old built one almost by himself and was rather possessive about the stool.

He wants to paint it himself in a Star Wars Angry Birds motif and already put sliders on it and carried it around with him most of the afternoon.

It was pretty cute.

I’m glad he enjoyed it, because we’re hoping he’ll want to help with the “family business” as he gets older.  Start ’em young, right?

And Jeff finally was able to get started on the family room trim this evening.  It’s looking amazing and I hope to get to prime and paint it tomorrow.  Trim makes me happy.

Trim makes me happy as well. Don’t buy me chocolate, roses, or any other “romantic” fiddle-faddle. Trim is the way into this girl’s heart.

Marian — you are so blessed to have your dad (and mum) to help you! I was missing my dad when you wrote about him “tinkering” with your new office light. My dad could take on just about any project! Have a great weekend!

Kimberly (and Marian) — I was going to say virtually the same thing about missing my dad “tinkering” with projects. He was the one that gave both my sis and me toolboxes when we went off to college and gave us new tools every year at Christmas to put in them. I always recommend this to men with daughters — it was SO empowering.

      Hi Marian!
I’m in love with the little gray French chair in the home office. Would you share with me what finish the wood trim is? From the picture it looks like it has been stripped to natural wood with touches of chippy white paint.
I have an old Victorian sofa that I think your look would be fabulous for…. thank you!

Oh my goodness, a Master Mustard Seed! Did you notice his little thumbs are just the same as yours! Very noticeable in the last photo. Can’t blame him about the stool. They are a great replica of yours and will finish up nicely I’m sure! Is the office walls painted in Grey Owl? Had you said that before .

Ditto on the trim…we’ve been remodeling our laundry room for much longer than I’d like to admit and not a day goes by that I don’t think “this will be so nice when the trim goes up”! Also, I just used MMS Tricycle with the Antiqueing Glaze as an accent inside a display cupboard in the laundry room. It looks so awesome! I’ll send a pic when it gets it trim!

Love the office. What if the black metal on the chandy was painted apron strings or tricycle??

    7. Marisa Franca

They are so cute when they follow gramps and dad around. They not only build memories, they are learning some handy skills. I love it!

My dad was so handy too and like some of your other readers I miss him so much and loved that about him. He taught me how to change a flat tire too! So awesome to see your son learning and taking an interest.

If moldings/trim are primed and painted before installing, hours of work can be saved.

How I wish my dad had lived to see our boys, I miss Him and Mom so much. But I have been blessed with wonderful grandson & (Granddaughters) to enjoy. I want to hug that litle guy, my goodness what is another grandchild!!!!!!Thanks so much for sharing.

I love your lighting choice! Really nice! So nice to hear about that family time! 🙂

Marian, I think the new light fixture looks good. The black metal makes it a bit more “masculine,” which is good since you are sharing office space with your husband now. I was just wondering if those lights would accommodate small, burlap covered shades. That may make the fixture look more interesting.

How cute that your older son was helping! You may have another pair of hands (albeit little hands) joining you in your projects soon.

I’m impressed that your son got involved with the assembly process. And I’m impressed with the patient help he was getting. How special. Who cares if your day didn’t go as planned. Looks like it was a pretty special day.

Marian and anyone here that can help me out.
I was inspired by this amazing blog and refinished a lovely dresser in
a grey/white. I decided I wanted to change the hardware.
Something maybe glass, a wee bit of bling.

      My problem – I need 3 1/2″ drawer pulls. I thought I was a good
researcher, but found so little available or that aren’t blah modern tubular style.

****I would appreciate any guidance.******** Many thanks!
Oh and my new room, i beefed up the window with tons of trim. What a
      transformation.

A lovely day with the family!

    16. MaryS

TRIM absolutely makes me happy too!! Details, details. I’ll bet if you put a ceiling medallion up with that light fixture you’ll really love it a lot more. Thing is…. the light has to come down, medallion go up, light go back up. Doggone it. I have them in every room.
I hope your little guy gets to keep his stool… after all he’s invested now. 🙂

    17. Wendy

Your little man looks just like you…….he’s your little Mustard Seedling!

    18. Kristi

Love that light fixture-totally scored on that! I had to laugh when you said your son carried the step stool around with him because my four year old would have done the same thing. He loves it when our big ladder is out for a project in our house-then it’s up and down the ladder for a solid hour!

    19. Kit

Yes! Finally someone writes about 8020 mentari mentari jadore fashion blogspot.

    20. Liz

I was buying paint at Home Depot Saturday and found a tub of spackle with primer added to it! One more thing you don’t have to do when prepping for painting!!! Score!
