After lots and lots of painting, the Craig’s List wardrobe we found for Megan’s office makeover is finished!

And, here she is.  The beast herself…

Megan came to the studio yesterday to help us with the final coat of green on the outside (a custom mix of MMS Milk Paint in Boxwood, Lucketts Green and Mustard Seed Yellow) and the interior in Linen.

Kriste and Megan also worked on cutting and hemming the curtains.  We’re just going to hang them on clips, so they just needed a double hem on three sides.  We’re going to hem the bottom in the room, once the curtains are hanging, so they hit the floor at the perfect height.

This morning, my dad came over and installed some shelves in it, so it can be functional for storage.

He screwed 1 x 2 supports along the back and some scrap pieces of wood on each side, measuring to make sure the shelves would be level.

He then rested the shelves on the supports and screwed in one more support from the bottom, in the center, to hold the shelves in place.

I then painted the shelves and supports in two coats of Linen, so everything blended together seamlessly.

Oh, that bead board.  I love it in the fresh coat of Linen.

We decided to leave the finish unfinished and we didn’t even distress it.  It just looked perfect and fitting for the piece in its matte, raw state.

We did get a little bit of cracking and chipping that, again, looks perfect for the piece.  I think sometimes we fight pieces too much, when they know exactly what they want to be.  We just need to work with them.

Obviously, these are all fun accessories and some of them will be used in Megan’s space, but this will be filled with books, bins, papers, office supplies and whatever Megan needs to store.

I just love how this piece turned out and can’t wait to see it in the space.

As a reminder, here is how it started…

And now…

Just in case it sounds like I was eating bonbons while everyone else was painting, sewing and putting in shelves, I was working on the slipcovered chair.  We’ll talk about that in the next installment.

And I think we’ll be ready to install everything in Megan’s room next week!

      The final color is perfect.

Love how this wardrobe turned out. I’m always so amazed by your work. I have a question about how your dad installed the 1 x 2 supports. I have a small wardrobe that I’ve been wanting to add shelves to, but I’m afraid that the screws will poke through on the outside. How does he known the depth of the screws that he can use? I can’t really tell how thick the side pieces of my wardrobe are. I don’t have a handyman around, so it’s up to me, I sure don’t want to wreck the piece. Thank you!

      • marian

Sure thing! You can usually see the thickness of one side somewhere on the piece, whether it’s the top, bottom or one of the sides. Snoop around and see if you can see an edge. Most wood boards are about 3/4″ thick, but it depends on your piece. They could be thicker or thinner. We attached a 3/4″ thick board to the bead board backing, which was also about 3/4″, so we used 1 1/4″ screws, so they would provide good support without poking through.

I hope that helps a little!
