It’s finally done!  Well…you know what “done” means in my house.  It means I’m done with it for now.  Although, aside from changing paint colors and/or accessories, I don’t think there’s much more I can or need to do to this room.  I’ve always been drawn to white cabinets with dark counters (wood or black) and a wood or white floor.  Now I have it!

Here’s a tour…

As I was going through the list of things we’ve done to the kitchen, I realized that almost all of the materials used for this makeover were free.  Well, not free, but traded for advertising on my blog or promotion through a post.  I’ll try to give you a rough idea of costs, though, so you can get a realistic idea of executing this look (or parts of it) in your home.  With the exception of laying the floor tile, we did all of the work ourselves.

So, here are the totals…

  • Paint – $250
  • Hardware – $450
  • Counters – $2,100
  • Back Splash – $800
  • Floor – $400
  • Sink & Faucet – $1,575
  • Exhaust fan & materials for range hood – $350
  • Misc supplies, tools, materials, etc. – $550

Grand total: $6,475 (over 3 years).  We probably spent about $1500 (including the labor for installing the tile floor) out of pocket and the rest was covered under freelance projects, advertising  trades, DIY blog squad, etc.

There are definitely ways to cut the costs even further, though.  You can choose a less expensive faucet like the Traditional Stainless Two Handled Arc Faucet, get Numerar Beech Counters ($129/6 ft section at Ikea) instead of walnut, tile the back splash in White Ceramic Subway Tile ($75/12 sq ft), and go with these bronze drawer pulls for $1.85/each and these knobs for $1.29/each.

Full tutorials will be available on HGTV.com soon for the custom range hood, butcher block counters, boxwood topiaries and boxwood wreath.

…and now…

I tell you, this is how I pictured this kitchen when we first walked into our home almost seven years ago and I’m just tickled when I look over at the space.

Please remember that we fixed it up over several years and as we could afford it or as my blog/freelance work gave us the opportunity.  If you’re itching to give your kitchen a makeover, I would suggest starting with paint.  It’s probably the biggest bang for your buck and can make dark and dated kitchens look bright and fresh.

I’ll share more details about installing the sink and faucet and I’ll definitely post to the HGTV.com projects when they’re live.

There are a ton of links in this post and some of them are Amazon Affiliate links.  This post is not a sponsored post and all opinions are my own.

Looks AMAZING my beautiful and talented friend!! LOVE it.

    2. Lori @Vintage Charm Restored

I absolutely love it!! The before and after’s are amazing!! I need that wreath for my own Bessie!! I really love your countertops the most!! Never thought I’d be so drawn to the wood but man they are truly beautiful with all that white!! Love Love!!

    3. Liz

Gorgeous! You have such an eye for what looks good together…I just can’t get over the backsplash. Love it!

    4. julie

Fits your house perfectly! Job well done! (so excited to do my own butcher block counters this spring) 🙂

    5. Monica

Looks great! I love how light and farmhousy it is! But, I will admit that I don’t love the cow head 🙂 Glad you like it though!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yeah, my husband’s with you on the cow. It’s not his favorite thing, but he said it’s okay.

    6. Ann

It is so beautiful! I also love those countertops — and I am inspired to try a make-over in our kitchen. My husband and I have never done ANY project at all, however, beyond painting a wall. Thank you for showing how much can be accomplished!

    7. Katie

It’s so beautiful! And I LOVE the faucet, and I weep that I will never be able to own it!

    8. kristin

Absolutely LOVELY! I love that you had a vision when you walked into that kitchen so many years ago. I did the same with the house we have now. I had a “vision” for the family room and it all came together. The kitchen was soo close to my “dream” kitchen I lucked out there. I think as creative souls we see those “visions” and it is such a treat to have them come to fruition. It is absolutely wonderful–ENJOY! And paint your cabinets people!! That and cabinet hardware I think can really change a kitchen. I also suggest adding crown molding to the top of cabinets and/or extending, along with adding beadboard to the sides of standard cabinetry units and the standard islands! I am so excited for the topiary/wreath tutorials!!

    9. Iesha

Love love love. Perfect blend of vintage and antiques, with a splash of colors!

    10. Jeanette @ Creating a Life

So happy to hear you have the kitchen you always wanted (and knew you could create!) It’s all so beautiful and full of character and charm!

      Jeanette @ Creating a Life

    11. stefanie

      wow!!! it is soooooooooo beautiful!!!

    12. Melissa Linnenburger

Your kitchen is so delicious, I could eat it! Where are you hiding your microwave? I was wondering how I might make myself a beautiful range hood, but my microwave lives there. Did I miss that detail somewhere?
      Beautiful, as always!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Thanks! If you look in the picture with the mixer on the counter, the microwave is just to the left. I’d love to create a built-in cubby for it at some time, but my husband told me we’re done. 🙂 I have a ton of counter space, so it’s not a big deal to have it on the counter. When I was in a tiny townhouse, I lived without a microwave for 2 years. I can hardly believe it now, but I just decided I wasn’t going to use one, so I learned how to heat everything in the oven/double boilers/steamers, etc.

        • Melissa

Ah, I see it now. You’ve got my wheels a turnin’! Thanks for the inspiration!

    13. Karen

Beautiful Marian, your kitchen looks amazing, the range hood is to die for. I was torn between a range hood and an under mounted microwave for my kitchen redo. After seeing yours I’m totally sold on a range hood. Love the cow too!

    14. Lauren

Absolutely gorgeous! Those countertops are perfect and I love the chalkboard wall! Everything looks so great together – thanks for sharing!

    15. Debra@CommonGround

just beautiful, Marian. It looks so much bigger too!

    16. Laura

So beautiful and inspiring! Thanks for the cost breakdown! I see that the stove is white. And I’m glad somebody asked about where the microwave went. Is your fridge also white? I think it’s at the end by the chalkboard wall on the right with a cabinet surround? I’m contemplating painting our cabinets but I’m not sure if I’d do white appliances or stainless. Did you prefer the white because they blend more or were you just working with what you have?

      • Miss Mustard Seed

The white appliances were already there and I can’t jusity getting new appliances just for looks. I go back and forth, though, wondering which I prefer for the space. I like how the white blends in, but i would love a beefy gas range a shiny French door fridge! 🙂

    17. debi

Love it all! Even the cow’s head…but here’s another unsolicited idea. Why not paint the cow’s head? Either whitewash it to blend more with the kitchen or use an accent color like the green in your stepstool. It would soften up the look and it would not be as stark against the white range hood. An easy & quick chalk paint project—or maybe milk paint. Just a thought.

    18. Jaimee

This is absolutely gorgeous. I just sat and watched your video on painting cabinets while sipping my afternoon latte. After seeing the video and your inspirational kitchen reveal, I am more convinced than ever I need to paint mine. Do you think the oil-based paint will help provide protection as well? The cabinets in our home are quite soft, meaning already knicked and scratched quite extensively on the lower ones. I keep wondering if the oil-based might help create a “veneer” to harden the surface a bit. Your productivity amazes me!

    19. Abby

I don’t thing I’ve ever commented on your blog, although I read every post. I just had to tell you what a beautiful job you did in this room! It is so inviting and fresh, I believe I could sit in for hours just looking around. It gives me great hope, as we are in the midst of our own kitchen reno and, like you, it will have to be done over time as finances allow. I know we’ll get there if we just stick with it!

    20. Amy

It looks beautiful! We are moving into a rental with white cabinets and unfortunately, weird pink countertops 😛 Hoping to take some of your ideas and make it a little more liveable lol!

    21. Gloria

I have a set of the same canister and also the spice jars to match. Very pretty kitchen.

    22. Linda@Coastal Charm

      Hello Marian,
What a beautiful kitchen…my favorite part is your vent hood. Well…I like it all…it has such a great farmhouse feel.

      Blessings,
      Linda

    23. Brandy~greylanehome

Amazing!!! I love how bright and cheery it feels. Of course all your special little touches just add to the charm. Oh and those countertops…..Gorg.

    24. Angie

What a stunning transformation, Marian! It’s so light and bright now, and an interesting room to look at and enjoy all the special touches. Well worth your hard efforts! Now, sit back and enjoy it!

      Blessings,
      ~Angie

    25. phyllis

wow your kitchen has come a long way, the power of paint,…love the light bright cabinets, I love those faucets too, counters are such a treat, you must love being in that wonderful kitchen, not cooking just sitting and looking and enjoying….lol

    26. Nancy

WOW!!!! It’s amazing. I am so awed by your talent. Got your book last month—absolutely fabulous.

    27. Connie

I am so amazed at each of your room reveals how much you and I have the same tastes. I spend so much time studying all the details for more ideas for my own home. We are do it yourselfers also and my kitchen is my next project. I am totally in love with those wooden countertops; they are absolutely beautiful. Hope they stay that way. There is one picture that I wished you had put up. You can only see partially the glass front cabinet atop the microwave. Please post if possible. Great job and looking forward to your next project. Bathroom maybe?

    28. Kerri, A Pop of Pretty

Oh wow, it’s now so light and bright and pretty! You must LOVE it! I am mad for that boxwood wreath and cow head, and the open shelving with the chalkboard backing! Perfection. ~Kerri

    29. Julie Shaw

Marion – your kitchen is stunningly beautiful. Congratulations!!! I think you get so much more satisfaction from a job you’ve been up to your elbows in rather than just paying a contractor/designer etc to do it all. Thanks for taking the time to show us all the work you did and how you did it. The kitchen counters are amazing. I never even thought about butcher block but your counters gleam like jewels. I think they are the centrepiece of your kitchen. I can’t even begin to tell you how impressed I am. I am finally getting your paint on Saturday. The hutch in my sunroom is the next painting project – can’t wait to see what it looks like in mustardseed! J

    30. Wanda G

This really looks lovely in your kitchen. We want to put an above stove microwave in ours, can’t wait till that comes about. I wasn’t a fan of the cow at first, but have to admit in the whole it looks good. Love your vision.

    31. shelia

Marion, your kitchen is so beautiful!! You’ve taken such care in choosing every detail. You nailed it.
      Be a sweetie,
      Shelia 🙂

    32. Nita{ModVintageLife}

The whole kitchen is just so beautiful. How does it feel to have your dream kitchen?

    33. Kris

      Marion,
This is just gorgeous. I love every inch so beautiful. What a transformation. Love it all. Happy Easter.
      Kris

    34. Christi

Wow, Marian! It looks fabulous! I love the cows. I have a thing for cows, too. I think it’s their pastoral quality and the idea of farmland that attracts me to them.

You never cease to amaze me with all you accomplish. Were there any Raisinets involved?

    35. Brandi

Absolutely gorgeous! I love every single detail…even the cow!! ; )

    36. Susan

Beautiful beautiful MMS I love everything about it! Congratulations!
Now I have to get busy with the painting of my own cabinets!
      Susan

    37. Janet Lawson

Your kitchen is beautiful but that before photo..WOW..What a tranasformation..

    38. Rie

Beautiful! So light and airy now, but also warm!

    39. Kathleen

What a beautiful transformation! I’ve been hinting to my husband that we really need to paint our dark ’80’s kitchen cabinets white but he’s dubious. Is there any substitute paint (hint: cheaper) that you can recommend in place of the white paint you used? Thanks!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Honestly, I have tried cheap paints and they are a waste of money. You end up applying more coats in the end and they don’t wear as well. Painting cabinets is a big project and it’s worth using high quality paint. I believe Sherwin William’s ProClassic is a bit cheaper and that’s still a very nice paint.

    40. May

I love everything about it! I noticed the sliced apple way up as I was reading and thought “how artistic” then I get a close up later 🙂 I love the fresh coffee too 🙂 I can’t believe how pricy that faucet is but you saved so much on everything else…My kitchen looks like your before and it’s much smaller can’t wait for us to be able to do it…
      Enjoy your fabulous kitchen!
      Regards,
      May

    41. Melissa

Those counters are amazing ~ I love them!!

    42. Melissa

A job well done. Simply stunning. I just LOVE a good makeover story and you have done a fantastic job!

    43. ellery

That is one fabulous kitchen! It looks so high end and makes me get the itch to start painting my cabinets…..You never cease to amaze me!

    44. aimee {sixteen fourteen}

WOW! What an amazing transformation…truly gorgeous. I’m so impressed by your ability to have so much stuff without it looking cluttered at all. Also, thanks for the info on the backsplash, I’ve been searching with no luck…and now I’ve found it! As long as it doesn’t compete with the pattern on my kitchen island that is. 🙂

    45. bekah

GORGEOUS! we are moving on Saturday, and I CANNOT WAIT to start the kitchen(think carpet and pink counters). That said…we wont be doing it for a little while. I am going to email your kitchen to my husband though…you know…just to remind him. Haha

    46. teresa

I love all the little touches….the cow, the chalkboard on the back of the cupboard shelf , the green stool….well, I just love it.
Looks divine….I bet you are truly happy.
      Happy Day
      Teresa

    47. MARY EGUIA

Looks gorgeous ! Just a thought ,how about putting molding w crown around the doorway?

    48. KC

I love it! Your kitchen is huge it appears. I have a question – how did you hang that sign over your stove on the tile backsplash?

    49. Erin@Managing the Manor

GOR.GEOUS. Those are the most swoon-worthy countertops I’ve ever seen!!!

    50. jeanne crackel

I love these countertops and that gorgeous little detailed backsplash. This is truly a kitchen I would love to cozy up in an stay for hours chatting over coffee! Thank you once again for your inpsiring work and beautiful renovations! I have loved following your blog for many years and I love to watch the transformations of your home! Your blog has inspired me to start a blog of my own and my home renovations! Keep up the great work!

    51. Kristen

I liked your kitchen the way it originally was, but now it’s amazing! ~and~ the fact that you made “trades” for most of it makes it even better! Excellent that you provided suggestions for less expensive alternatives for those of us on a budget as well…

Love your Delft canisters – those are sweet…

I’m a sucker for signs, the “For Rent” above your stove and the “Tourists” ones are awesome…FYI – I had to have a Tourist sign of my own, so I designed and painted one of my own…the first sign that I have ever painted and I must say it came out great and I have made two more signs since…so thanks for the inspiration!

    52. Sherry

Just love it all! You are so inspiring!

    53. Peg

I prefer wood cabinets over painted almost any day…but that’s just me. Your backsplash and countertops are drop dead gorgeous!!

    54. MAH

Can we all say WOW?! I think my favorite is the thickness of the counter tops. I had wood counter tops for years and LOVED them. The only thing I don’t like is the pot rack, it just bothers me so much. Oh well, thank goodness we all like different things. Oh I asked my husband about a cow head, he looked at me like I had lost my mind!! I then explained it would be for the kitchen, he was relieved, he thought I was thinking of putting it in his “room”, his hunting and fishing room. Thanks for the update on your beautiful kitchen.

    55. Bobetta

I started reading your blog shortly before you painted your kitchen cabinets and have really enjoyed seeing the transformation you have made to make it YOUR dream kitchen. Great job! It’s a thing of beauty! You are such a talented lady and a really hard worker, an inspiration! God Bless!

    56. Andrea

What an inspiration! It is beautiful.
Are you without a microwave now or do you have one tucked away somewhere I don’t see?

I am debating whether I could do without one. Not sure that I can so I am curious.

      Congrats on a beautiful transformation!

      • Liz VanKirk

The microwave is there. I see it on the counter. (We have the same one).

    57. debra

Beautiful kitchen and I love the cow head. Please encourage Decor Steals to offer them again! Thanks! Debra

    58. Barbara

It really looks great. I have fir countertops that have been oiled and love them but don’t ever leave frozen juice to thaw, or the lid to an iron casserole on them, that makes dark rings that just doesn’t come out. Maybe the finish you used will prevent that. Also, at one time you mentioned that you would like stainless steel applicances but I think the white ones with the white cabinets look much better. BTW yours is the first blog I read every morning, can’t believe how much you get done in a day!

    59. Rose C.

      Beautiful! Love the countertops!

    60. Cynthia

I LOVE it! Th whole kitchen is just gorgeous. I really like the canisters on the counter too with the blue….did you find them recently or are they old? I also like the kitchen faucet. Very pretty lines, I usually gravitate to Delta but for our new house I may check this one out for our kitchen.

      Cynthia

    61. Claudine

I love your kitchen, Marian! Congratulations for competing it and sharing all the steps with us!
You got me hooked in ironstone, old scales and now I’m obsessing with cows… Lol!
I love the butchers block, you did a wonderful job!
It is unique and not a budget breaker, love that!

    62. Sheila

Absolutely gorgeous kitchen, Marian! I love all of the details, the tile, everything!

    63. Bryonna

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ! I love everything you’ve done, your exquisite attention to detail, and especially for sharing it all with us. Thank you, and much joy to you and your family in this light-filled space.

    64. Danielle

I am drooling over your kitchen. Love all that you’ve done with it. The counters and back splash are amazing. I also LOVE white cabinets. Fabulous, fabulous job!

    65. Liz VanKirk

      Hi Marian –

I think the painted cabinets came out great! Couple of questions for you. Are your cabinets maple underneath the paint? When you painted did you just start with the primer or did you have to prepare them with something else before? Also how many coats of paint did it take to cover the cabinets?

I so want to paint ours (which look almost like yours minus the beadboard inset).

      Liz

    66. Joan

Aha! I spotted the microwave in picture 4 (just the edge of it on the left) and in picture 7 just across from the lovely Clarabelle! I love how the kitchen turned out. My favorite? the chalkboard paint INSIDE the cabinets that say bowls and plates. What a great way to organize the cabinets! Keep up the good work!

    67. Nancy

      GORGEOUS!!!!!! Nuff said!

    68. sandra

Found the cow head that everyone wants on antiquefarmhouse.com and the decor steals are awesome to check out!!
Love the makeover and if this is what you have dreamed of doing, you have finally made your dream come true! Happy for you and the family!!! Your dad has helped save a lot of money but the kitchen is extra special knowing it was a family affair:) Enjoy the great makeover, which I know you will. Come to the Texas Hill Country and I will help you do MINE and I will even give you a down home welcome with a Texas BBQ and sleeping quarters at no charge:)))))—-oh, bring that handyman dad of yours, he might have to show me HOW to do my counters too!!
Great job and Blessings for all.

    69. Lin

Asolutely fabulous! I have enjoyed following your kitchen redo. It is so light and airy and I know you will be enjoying it for many many years. There is such satisfaction in knowing how much you saved and also the hard work you put in it and got this wonderful outcome isn’t it! I can not pick a favorite..but it all looks just like your taste and that is what makes it so awesome!

    70. Rachel

      Fabulous!

    71. Linda S. in NE

Oh Marian, What a fabulous final show. The kitchen is so “you”. I guess that’s because you were the one who dreamed it, designed it, and then with hours and days and nights of hard work, made your dreams a reality. Congratulations on your finished project.

    72. Kerry

Love everything about your kitchen. My eyes were also drawn to the area off the kitchen. Looks like a little nook with a desk. So neat. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    73. Anne Boykin

Dear MMS, It looks fabulous! I’m so glad you have your cow – she looks great there over the stove. Isn’t it rewarding to see the results of your hard work? Thanks for sharing your sources with us too. Hugs, Anne Boykin

    74. Nanci

It is so pretty…my favorite thing hands down is the backsplash! I love it. Such a open, bright and beautiful kitchen to cook in now. You did a fabulous job.

    75. Nancy

This is fabulous Marian! Now, with all of the moeny you have saved by doing it yourself and getting things for free, splash out on a new Stainless steel stove! (I know we have spoken of this before). You current stove is letting the side down.

      • Emma

Just when I was thinking how charming the enamel stove looks. It fits in with the rest of the kitchen and doesn’t look show-off…….. nothing else but the sink in SS is there?
I have to blink and swallow twice when i read about a $1,000+ faucet. That’s astounding to me. But it will probably last forever.
That kitchen suits the woman who created it and, except for the animal head, I love it.

        • Emma

          PS
I love love love the countertops. Fabuloso.

    76. Winnie

      Breathtaking – absolutely breathtaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    77. Denise T

Amazing kitchen makeover. It turns out beautifully…

    78. Mary Anne

      It’s really, really beautiful!

    79. Kathleen

Just this morning I was wishing to see more “reveal of your kitchen” thank you! And well done!! Enjoy its deliciousness! Smiles, K

    80. Kari

Man! What a fantastic remodel. I am particularly fond because I also have the same cow head in my kitchen! LOVE HIM!

    81. Jan

Your kitchen is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing all of the “after” photos. I also like the blackboard shelves where you name the items on the shelves. I really enjoy your blogs, even though I don’t comment much. You are an inspiring and lovely woman! I’m glad I have your book, too!

    82. Kerry@homecrush

Love it all, from the wood countertops to the backsplash to the chalkboard wall and right down to your twin topiaries next to the sink! Gorgeous!

    83. KMP Modern

Wow, your kitchen went from generic to just plain gorgeous. It looks well planned and easy to use, all with a fine eye on design. I especially love the shiny wood counter tops and the back-splash tile in a herringbone style. There is such a great flow and humorous touches, like the bear head with wreath. I can just tell this room is well-loved and honored!

    84. Judy

What an amazing transformation. I love the pan rack. I looked at BB&B and it doesn’t come with hanging hardware. Is it tricky to install? Can you just drill into a ceiling? I too would love to “borrow” your Dad. Lucky girl!

    85. Peggy

Love, love, love it – I wasn’t sure about the countertop – but result is beautiful! I think I’ll go clean my kitchen now 🙂

    86. Terry

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. I adore this space now. It has so much personality and I can see you in it. I just think something like a grain sack valance over the sink window would be so you too! Not a grain sack in sight of your kitchen! That surprised me.

    87. Seleen

Umm, can I come live in your kitchen for a few days? 🙂

You’ve created such a beautiful space!

    88. Audrey Zumwalt

Love it all Marian. You worked hard to make your dream come true. Congratulations.
      God Bless.
      Audrey Z. @ Timeless Treasures

    89. Andi

Unbelievable! This is so gorgeous! Congrats on a job very well done.

    90. peggy huff

I so wish I could PURCHASE BREATH, right now!! Wow, so lovely & PRACTICAL, I am
breathless! Delighted for all of you.

    91. Shelly

Love your kitchen so much! I like your white stove with the rest of the white as well. I wanted to share my feelings on the stainless steel appliances. I have a Kitchen Aide stove and dishwater in SS and I do not like it at all. The first week I had my new stove I accidentally sprayed the drawer on the bottom with some floor cleaner while cleaning. I have tried EVERYTHING I can get my hands on to get it to come off. Martha Stewart’s advice was to use Windex but that did not help. I have tried the Kitchen Aide SS cleaner and all other products that others have recommended, but nothing works. The front of my dishwasher some how got a drip of what I think was dishwasher soap and it will not come off either. So now I have new SS that already looks awful. ( I like a nice shine). A lot of other ladies I know have had some of the same issues, especially if you have little children touching the SS, you will find that you are always shining their sweet little finger prints off of things. 🙂
      Just sayin! 🙂

      The countertops are absolutely gorgeous!

    93. karen

oh Marian, it is alllll fabulous!! Absolutely love it all and your hard work prevailed. What a special gal you are, and agree, a very hard worker! Thanks so much for your wonderful blog site…so glad I found you (fav!!) And thanks for giving us so much good information. I am just starting to paint (and resell)…fingers crossed. because of you! 🙂

    94. Sharon B.

OH! MY! GOODNESS! Your kitchen has gone from drab to absolutely gorgeous! I loved when you painted the cabinets white and tiled the floor but now the icing on the cake – those beautiful wood counters, the herringbone backsplash and that awesome range hood cover (it looks like an expensive custom range hood). What a great result for all that hard work. I’m sure you smile every time you look at your kitchen!

    95. Beth Morrow

What a beautiful transformation! Well done Miss Mustard Seed!

    96. Laurie V

      Stunning! I am so inspired.

    97. Ashley

Love, love, love your kitchen!! I’m planning to paint my kitchen cabinets (would love to do white, but I have white Corian counters which I don’t want to replace right now and I’m afraid that would be too much white – so I’m thinking a sage green). Anyway – I’ve been reading a lot about chalk paint and using it in kitchens and was just wondering if you considered using it on yours. Would you recommend it?

    98. Peg Mitchell

I think your kitchen is absolutely AMAZING! Would love to have a cowhead like that – any hints on where I might get one?

    99. Denise

oh wowsa. That is crazy to see the before and after! It wasn’t that long ago that you had all the before!!
It looks truly amazing, and I love all the touches you added to make it so fresh and unique. I never did get any of the boxwood from Home Goods. 🙁 They only had 3 pieces left by the time I was able to get up there, and they were too huge for the spots I wanted. Still keeping my eyes peeled though! 😉
      Enjoy your gorgeous new kitchen!

    100. Pamela B.

Absolutely love the transformation! It is so clean and chic! We have wanted to paint our medium oak cabinets which came with the house 25 years ago. No sense in replacing solid oak that is in great condition with brand new cabinets! I look forward to reading your article on how they are holding up. Thanks for all your articles and tutorials…they absolutely inspire me to take on these projects ourselves!

    101. Susan @ glorygivers.com

Clean, earthy, stylish, practical, warm, welcoming….it’s all good!

    102. Kim

      One word…….LOVE!!!!!

    103. Jill Cooper

Just beautiful – everything looks perfect. And thanks to you my kitchen is now on my bucket list LOLOLOL I’ve done little pieces here and there but now I want the whole thing!

    104. Sandy

Marion, it doesn’t even look like the original kitchen/home. You and your helpers did an amazing job on the entire kitchen! I’m envious that you are so talented and BRAVE! I’m afraid I’d start something like this, and not be able to finish. You give women like me such inspiration! THANK YOU!
Blessed Easter to you & your precious family!

Question: when you paint your cabinets, what about the inside? Leave as is except for the ones that may be doorless or have glass fronts?

    106. Pamela

Marian your kitchen looks fabulous! We are in the process of redoing ours as well. I sawSharp that you have a counter micro now. What brand is it and do you like it? We took our above range one down as well and purchased a Sharp counter top. I love the options of the popcorn button but it does not work. It also has a soften ice cream button. Haven’t used it yet but most certainly would have. It looks great and fits in our space well but it sounds like a Mac truck when it is on and fluctuates in power as it heats things.

    107. Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality

Marian, it is all just beautiful!!! You really worked hard on it and it is totally your personality and style. Love, love, love it!

    108. barbara

Hi, I finally got a chance to see the finished product, all completed. You must be in love! It looks really terrific! Enjoy!

    109. April Hoff

Love your kitchen! The chalkboard wall, the backsplash, the countertops….everything is gorgeous! Found you through Centsational Girl today! Love your blog! 🙂

    110. MaryS

Very, very nice!! You should feel so proud of the accomplishment you and your husband have done to your home. Kudos to you both!

    111. Leslie

It’s lovely! I especially like the counter. How do you like the Daltile floor tiles? Are they convincing?

    112. Linda

Great kitchen remodel! What we do when we have to use any type of saw to cut; we use painters tape and mark it and cut through the tape. leaves a nice cut edge. Not sure what you named your cow in the kitchen? Nellie would be fitting 🙂

    113. ToTheMoonandBack

Absolutely gorgeous! Love the transformation and all your details.

    114. Hannah Walker

Gorgeous! (as always!). I love the counter tops and the tap (faucet). In fact I love everything you do lol!

    115. MyVintageLoves

I love your kitchen, you did a great job! Is the wreath around Ol’ Bessie, the 24″ diameter boxwood wreath? I am having a hard time finding the perfect size and wonder if this is the one I need. Thanks in advance for you info.

    116. blair

Would love to know where you got the little trees on your sink? Thanks!!

    117. Deirdre

      Hello!

We want to write an article about your awesome white kitchen! We have a few questions to ask you and we need to get photo permissions. Can you shoot me an email so I can get all the details? Thanks so much! Your kitchen is drop dead gorgeous!!!

      Deirdre

    118. Deb

Love it! I want to paint our kitchen cabinets. They’re high quality oak so it’s a waste to replace them. But there’s so much oak in there – cabinets, floor, island. This is inspiring me to see the big difference that just paint can make!

    119. Kallee

I’ve loved your kitchen and white kitchens in general. My bubble was TOTALLY burst today when I had a cabinet guy come over to bid out changing my knotty alder cabinets to white and adding to the top of them so they go to the ceiling, when he told me the white cabinets are a nightmare to maintain. He said every little scuff mark, water splatter, hand print will show and then make things look awful. What has your experience been with your white cabinets?

Also, I’m looking into replacing my entry/great room/dining area/kitchen flooring with hardwood. Have you liked your hardwood? Why did you choose tile in your kitchen?

Lastly :), do you regret giving up counter space for your microwave? My set up is like your old set up – microwave above stove.

Thanks! Everything your hands touch turn into beautiful things. I love your blog and have loved your book!

      • Miss Mustard Seed

No, I don’t think white cabinets are a nightmare. If I really get close and look, I can see where I need to scrub, but that’s true of any cabinet. They are dirty either way, so I would rather see the dirt and clean it off. I wipe them down every once in a while and wipe off clear splatters from cherries, coffee, etc. when I see them.

Yes, I like the wood floors, but I wish I had gone lighter. Dark wood shows a lot of fuzz, footprints, etc. and a mid-tone wood would be a bit more forgiving while still giving a beautiful look. I picked tile for my kitchen because 1.) to be honest, Home Depot asked to partner with me on a tile project for my blog and 2.) we have two different hardwoods going on, so the tile separated them. I like the durability of the tile as well, but would put hardwood floors in a kitchen, no problem. I would probably opt for sealed hardwood, though, instead of prefinished.

Lastly, NO! I love my range hood and don’t regret giving up the counter space at all. I do have a lot of counter space, though, so I might have tried a built-in microwave option elsewhere if I didn’t. Or, I would do what I did in our tiny townhouse for 2 years…just not have a microwave. I know! Gasp! I learned to live without it, though, and didn’t miss it too much. 🙂

    120. Alison

I would also like to know what size boxwood wreath I need for the cow head! Thank you!

    121. Janice

What an amazing difference!!! Love the lighter look.

    122. Jennifer Stephens

I noticed with the flooring tile that they aren’t 18 x 18, at least they don’w look like it. Were the tiles cut in half and then installed? The kitchen is beautiful. Thanks so much.

    123. stephanie

Your kitchen looks amazing! Could you please give me further details about the range hood that you made?

    124. Felicia Price

I am curious, and I may have missed this but why not use your milk paint for the cabinets? I keep hearing wonderful things about using milk paint on cabinets. I am currently considering using milk paint on my cabinets. Now rethinking if you didn’t use it on your cabinets. ???

    125. Ginger

Oh my gosh! Are you kidding? This kitchen re-do is amazing! I can’t believe how beautiful it is!! Paint does make all the difference in the world. I just redid my kitchen on a smaller scale and I love it -but now you’re having me rethink it! lol…I couldn’t decide between grey cabinets or white. I loved both. I ended up choosing the grey (which with a huge bay window and all the light in my kitchen kinda looks blue) and now I am wondering…..
      Geez!

Would ya mind checking it out and giving me your opinion? It doesn’t compare to yours but I would love to know if ya think I should have went with white? I’d value your opinion! I still need counter tops and I love the butcher block but I don’t want my kitchen to look “country” and I am afraid with the grey blue it might, so I thought white counter tops????

I am in love with the cow head in the kitchen!!!!! What a great idea. Love!

    127. Mesha

Wow!!! Every since I read your book, I have been in LOVE with you & your eagerness to help people find their niche. You have out done yourself again. You are such an inspiration & I thank God for allowing me to be encouraged by you. Keep doing you cause no one can beat you at that…. 🙂

    128. Mary Beth Schwarz

WOW it is gorgeous! Where did you get the backsplash polished marble herringbone tiles? We will do our kitchen in about a month or so and I would love to have that backsplash! Thanks for showing us your kitchen! Mary Beth

    129. Kelly W

Love Love Love! I have been wanting to switch my laminate counters with butcherblock counters for a long time. My husband fears that they won’t hold up, especially near the sink. How are your countertops doing? Thanks so much!

    130. Sherill

LOVE the counter top! We are finishing our basement and planning to add a kitchenette, I was wondering did the Waterlox alone give you that great color or did you stain them too? Thanks for ALL your inspiration! I received a gift certificate for my birthday (I’m a Christmas baby) from a local bookstore and had them order your book for me and I cannot tell you how much I love having the book in my hand, even the guy who checked me out commented on the beauty of your book:)

    131. Suzan

Oh my gosh – what a fabulous kitchen – the details ( especially that mini herringbone tile ) are beyond gorgeous!!!

I have been scouring Pinterest, Houzz.com and Google images for almost a year trying to find a backsplash for my kitchen and was about to give up the idea of ever finding one that I like until I came across a picture of yours. I am totally in love with it. I read through your entire blog post and clicked on the link at the bottom that directs me to Amazon for the tile and it doesn’t look the same color as yours. You said you used Oriental White Polished Marble. In your pictures it looks to have a slight green tint to it which I really love but the picture on Amazon doesn’t look the same at all. I need mind to look exactly like yours b/c our cabinets are an antique white and it wouldn’t look right if I went with a grayish tile. Can you help? Is it a different color in person than the picture shows on Amazon? I really hope so b/c I want your kitchen!!! Thanks for your help.

    133. Jennifer

Beautiful! Having a hard time picking which grout color to use. Which grout did you use on the herringbone back splash? Also, we previously had unsealed butcher block counters and had some issues around the sink, but loved having the freedom of food safety and cutting. How has the sealer held up on the counters around the sink? Thank you.

    134. Nancy Guffey

I am an interior designer currently working as an art coordinator for a school district. I painted my cabinets white in my first house back when the whole country trend started in the seventies and have never looked back! We built a house in ’91 and painted the kitchen white then and we are starting a kitchen reno and will repaint the cabinets white. Over forty years of white cabinets! Never tire of them! I so love and appreciate this post as it will be helpful with our project! Thank you! Love your blog!

    135. Debbie

I have been looking for a backsplash like you have in the kitchen. Thanks for a link to the tile. Would you tell me what you used for your grout. There are so many choices and I like the way yours compliments the tile.

I’ve been exploring for a little for any high-quality articles or weblog posts in this sort
of space . Exploring in Yahoo I eventually stumbled upon this website.

an incredibly good uncanny feeling I came upon exactly what I needed.

I such a lot definitely will make sure to don?t put out of your mind this site and
give it a glance on a relentless basis.

    137. Ann

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I was wondering if you added an edge to the butcher block countertop …I just bought the Butcher block from ikea …thank you..Anna

    138. Anna

Hi, I was wondering how many coats of waterlox did you use on the countertop and a silly question but how do you like the two handle faucet compared to a one handle faucet, thanks so much your such a inspiration to me!

    139. Liz Aitken

WOW – this is one of the most stunning kitchens I’ve seen. I love all the details and finishes. You are really talented! Love your blog!

    140. Susan Wachtel

Love the transformation…beautiful. This week we are jumping in and having our dark knotty alder cabinets painted white. Looking forward to having the kitchen looking brighter. Thanks for sharing!

    141. Kipper Price

Beautiful work! My husband and I are getting ready to renovate our 1950’s kitchen, and your kitchen gives us hope! Thanks for the inspiration and the insight!

    142. Carrie

I was wondering if you made the wood sign above the sink? If do you have a tutorial on how to make one? Thank you

    143. Meg

This is a random question I’ve been meaning to ask you since I got my cow head! What size boxwood wreath fits around it? Don’t want to order one that is too small.

    144. Debra Parveen

I just Love it! I want to paint our kitchen cabinets. They’re high quality oak so it’s a waste to replace them. This is inspiring me to see the big difference that just paint can make!

      Cheers!
