With the heaviness that’s hanging over our country right now, I thought offering up another #happymailmovement giveaway to my readers would be a nice way to kick off the week.  It doesn’t make anything right or better, but it’s an itty-bitty way to spread a little happiness.

I’ve been spending a lot of time while under the stay-at-home/safe-at-home orders working on projects around the house and in the garden.  In the evenings, though, when I’m tired from the day, I’ve been crocheting dishcloths.  I’ve even come up with a couple of new and simple patterns to share!  But the point of adding to the growing stack was to give them away.

So, I’ve accumulated ten crocheted dishcloths in a variety of patterns to offer up.

They are all made of 100% cotton Sugar n’ Cream yarn in Ecru.  I have found that these wash up nicely and are great to use for wiping down counters and doing light cleaning work.  I keep one folded up over the divider in my sink and change it out every day or two.  I love their texture and the fact that I can wash and reuse them over and over.  They also don’t get stinky like sponges.

I’ve played around with making them with tighter, denser stitches, with popcorn bobbles, and with more of an “open weave” to allow more air through.  I even made a little “scrubby sponge” with a loop for hanging…

I like to try something a little different each time.

To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment on this post telling me something you’re thankful for.  That’s it!  The giveaway will close Friday, June 5, 2020, at midnight PST.  I’ll notify and announce the winners the following week.

If you’d like to learn how to crochet, I have several patterns that are a great place to start for beginners or people who need a refresh.  There are printable patterns, a video, and a supply list for each project.

My husband had surgery a week ago today. This morning, we went for his post-surgery appointment and the doctor said he is doing wonderful! We live in the country in Oklahoma and had to drive to Dallas three times for his surgery and related doctor visits. I am thankful I survived Dallas traffic!

      Hello Marian
First-time commenter here. Although our styles are very different, I stumbled onto your blog years ago and enjoy following for your thoughtful reflections on life. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to learn to do something new — not related to my work. When your dishcloth tutorial arrived, it seemed like fate. My mother, who died last summer after a short battle with cancer, made all my dishcloths — and I never learned how. I still have not learned how — and would so love a few of yours to tide me over and give me inspiration.
A long note to say I am thankful for the desire and ability to keep learning.
      Wishing you all good things.

    5. Shari

Most of all I am thankful that God’s word is there to keep us focussed on the right things, the things that matter most, the eternal things. He knows all, sees all and He is not surprised by any of the things going on in the world today. His love will never fail, and His mercies are new every morning. Our world is hurting, and HE is the healer.

Thankful for my family. I have 3 grown sons and my oldest is a policeman. He’s 30 and he, his wife and their son are living with me and my husband at the moment because they are moving into their newly bought home in a couple weeks. He works the mid shift as a sargent and my heart worries for him everytime he walks out the door to do his job in the tragic world. He’s a great, compassionate man, not only for his family but for those he encounters in his job. My heart hurts for the travesties that go on in this country. I pray for his safe return everyday. I pray for all of the police that have to work in these trying times. I pray for our country. Daily.

We lost our 22yr old grandson to Cancer. I thank the Lord every day that we had a close relationship from the day he was born. Grief is complicated. It’s said that it never leaves you in the place it finds you. The last thing I said to him was it was such an honor to be his Grandmother, and he replied, “well it sure wasn’t hard to be your Grandson”. God bless all of you readers who have the love if a child.

    117. Robin

Have been watching your painting tutorials while making masks for our local hospital and town residents. I’m thankful for the friend who lent me a sewing machine so I could that. I’m at 150+ and still going. I’m thankful that someday I’ll be able to view your painting tutorials again and try something new. I’m also thankful that our kitchen remodel is back underway after a 10 week hitatus. Soon, I’ll be able to put away the hotplate and cook in a real kitchen again. Many years ago my pastor’s wife gave me a pretty dishcloth like the ones you make and I just couldn’t bring myself to use it for washing dishes because I didn’t want it to wear out, so it continues to be one of my favorite potholders. I really should learn to make my own someday. ?

I have adapted it and am mailing my sister and niece a surprise to start summer.

      Love your work, Barbara.

    201. Alice Jane

I’m thankful that you share so much of your talent with your readers. I retaught myself to crochet after 50 years using your ruffled edge pattern and my first try was a disaster. Too tight in places and too loose in others with a gap here and there. I kept that one for myself but the next was much better. I was going to give it to my daughter who brought my great granddaughter who just turned three over to visit. When I brought it out for my daughter the little one said, “what’s that/” I said it is a wash cloth that I made. She rubbed it against her cheek and said, “oh so soft” Of course she took it home with her and I am making another one for my daughter. And then another for my granddaughter and then one for a friend and on it goes. I write this to let you know that your gifts to us who read your blog reach way beyond us to bless many others. May God continue to bless you and Jeff and your boys. Your talent and generosity are boundless!

    202. Linda

Today I am thankful for my children. Well, I’m always thankful for my children. 🙂
But today I am thankful that they are loving and respectful adults who take a stand for what is right. Loving and supporting those who are unjustly treated, taking a stand against hatred or those that take advantage of others, being generous with those you need a helping hand (even when my children could use a helping hand themselves). It brings tears to my eyes to know that they want a better, kinder, cleaner world. And they put feet on those desires.

    232. ROBERTA CORDELL

First off, I am so happy you posted the patterns again…I got the yarn before the shelter in place but could not remember the stitches you used. Right now I am very thankful that in spite of falling twice this month the only thing broken is my elbow. While it does hurt it could have been a hip or a pelvis. At my age only having small breaks is a blessing…on June 7 I will be 84…don’t know how on earth that happened! I really enjoy looking at all the pretty things on your blog…especially the beautiful yarn on your shelf.

    233. Kathy

I am so thankful for the creative relief you have given us all during this time. I am a newbie to your page and blog. Of course, I’ve known about your paints for years, but I didn’t know that you were on Facebook doing lives until a couple of weeks ago. I’ve watched them all over and over, now I’m going back through to watch your other tutorials. I am a seamstress so I now have plans to try your slipcover techniques, I have ordered some oils paints, and I have dug my sugar and cream yarns out of the bin I put them in a few years ago. Thank you so much for getting me out of my chair!! I am forever grateful!

    239. Tracie

Thank you Marian. It is very sweet and kind of you to offer a little bright spot that we all need right now and always really. I am thankful that even though my son’s May 17th wedding in Brooklyn was cancelled due to COVID-19, that he and his fiance are well and healthy. They will be getting married in a civil ceremony next week on the West coast, where we live and they will start their life together. I have two sons, like you, :), and they have chosen their life partners very well. It is such a blessing to have 2 beautiful daughters-in-law that love their husbands.

    240. Melissa

Im so thankful for Jesus. I’m thankful for a faithful husband of 23 years and that I still have 6 of my 8 children at home to share life with. I’m especially thankful in these times for those who put their lives on the line to protect us. Im thankful for my Marine son. I’m thankful for mostly restored health after a mysterious illness a few years ago that affected my nervous system.

I am thankful to have my husband at home, even through his work place had to let him go about a month ago, it has been nice to have him here with all of us. We are still praying about the next step, and would sure like to have him be able to be home more than back to a 16 hr. a day job. We shall see.

I’m so thankful for blue skies, chirping birdies, blooming flowers, sunshine, sunsets, the comforting sound of crickets at night, a clear night where I can see tons of stars… Thankful that these hard times have magnified the wonderful pleasures of life that many of us have taken for granted. Looking to what is pure, and good, and worthy of praise will get us through these dark days. And lots and lots of prayer.

    247. PC

I am thankful to be at home on a furlough -the $$ is not as much, but my safety and my husband’s safety (both seniors) is better. I also have found delight in cleaning out my house I have liven in for 20 years without being on a hurried timeline. God has given me the gifts of time and safety and I am thankful.

I am so thankful for the sovereignty of our God. I am thankful that despite covod-19’s attack on the world, my fiance is now my husband and we are coming out of what has been an extremely dark season married, homeowners! Our wedding was to be a big celebration May 1 but it was just us two with a pastor. Our friends played a worship set over zoom from the opposite coast before we said our vows. Married by a pastor we didn’t know in a state we didn’t know because it was the only state offering marriage licenses. We wanted to honor God and still get married. We did on March 25 and now we are closing on a house we never thought possible! Homeownership wasn’t possible, but God. I’ve always admired your dishcloths as well as all your work. I have some old pieces of furniture I’ve saved your tutorials on so that I can make our home “our home”. God is good all of the time and I am so thankful!

    251. Cindy

I am a relatively new follower of Miss Mustard Seed and I would love to win one of your dish cloths! I’m also going to check out your crocheting instructions ! Thanks! ?

    257. Jane B

I am thankful for each and every day that I wake up 😉 I am thankful that my family is physically, emotionally and even financially in good shape (my only surviving son has taken a huge hit in pay but continues to work and get that reduced paycheck, at least for now). I am thankful that my 3 grandkids are thriving at home. I’m thankful that my daughter-in-law who is a stay-at-home mom was a teacher in her earlier life; I am thankful that she is a wonderful mom to those kids and a loving wife to my son and a true believer and “truster” in God. I am thankful that my partner has, so far, survived over 8 years of prostate cancer which is now metastatic but doesn’t stop him from living and loving each day on this earth. I honestly wake up each morning, fix a cup of coffee and talk to God thanking Him for the life I live and love.

    258. Tyson Ann Trecannelli!

      Greetings from Salem, Virginia!

I am thankful for FAMILY. Been working on family history for months now with some pretty powerful online tools and have enjoyed every second. This is the most rewarding project I’ve undertaken. Everyone loves to hear updates on what’s been discovered and what ‘missing’ relative has been found. I love and appreciate my family more than ever! Best to you, Mary

Thank you for the give-away. I plan to order some yarn and begin making some dish rags. I like pieces I can wash and bleach.

I am thankful for the extraordinarily beautiful area of the country I get to live in. I’m thankful for an amazing husband, and that we live near two our grown sons and six of our grandies. I am thankful for technology, and most especially, I am thankful for the love and the goodness of God.

One more, I’m thankful for all the beautiful ‘thankful’ comments here today!

      Blessings!

    275. Sue Anderson

Right about here and now I am thankful for YOU. And for all the other people who spread cheer and kindness. I am mightily sick of the skulking about in masks and miss the open friendliness that disappears when we get anxious and afraid. Let’s not lose that. So smile behind that mask and extend a greeting. That is contagious is a GOOD way. Thank you one and all.

    276. Debbie Nisson

I am so grateful for the wonderful community we live in. We have been doing our own version of happy mail.-special delivery. One neighbor dropped off an Easter lily. Another a bottle of wine. Another a flat of annuals. Another magazines. We reciprocated with my husbands woodworking and my crocheted cotton dishcloths using your pattern.

I am thankful that at age 66, and having been nursing now for 45 years, I am still able to step up and make a difference in the life and health of others. God’s plan for my life is the greatest blessing and I know that he is not done with me yet! But this wife, mother and full time nurse manager needs balancing and crafting and creating things provides that for me. I love your blog and am inspired by your style and gifts. I am a DIY, vintage lover but lately I have had to settle for reading and not much doing! I used to knit but never crocheted. As soon as I saw your wash cloths, I was inspired to start! Unfortunately, COVID-19 got in the way! I am thankful for finding your blog and the peace and inspiration it gives me especially in these often overwhelming times.

    287. Tina

I can tire myself out weeding, shoveling and moving plants, so that when I go to bed, sleep comes quickly. I create a very safe and positive environment for my students. I am not looking for the next Van Gough, I am looking for kids who are inspired and at peace creating art. I appreciate my four children Rocco 11, Brooklyn Belle 10, Ridge 8, and Rhett Beau 5. The things I appreciate the most is the grace they give me for being there mom. When I was down a few days ago my oldest said mama you do so many things for us and others without blinking an eye or even think about doing it. Please know that I love you and I think you need to rest and know you can please everyone. It showed me that I am doing something right. For him to understand at his age that someone needs grace and love made me so proud. It is hard to be a mom in todays world. They all really show that love is the most important thing you can show a person. It really does spread so much peace in the world instead of mistreatment and the discerning things happen right now.

I am so thankful that God is in control. During these recent, hard days, I am reminded to be thankful for law and order and can only imagine what life could be like without the order that law and justice give us. We don’t know just how all this unrest will come out, but we do know that God’s plan will not be thwarted. Thank you, God, for all the many blessings you bestow on us each day!

      Hi,

I would first like to wish everyone a big HELLO and say how wonderful and strong you have all been in protecting the frail and weak with your efforts in social distancing. This has been a struggle but everyone is showing their true “mustard” and are making an outstanding effort. The greatest thing I am thankful for is to be safe. I find the news of each day is always in the back of my mind, but knowing I can be home without fear allows me to find the strength to get through the day. We all are finding our ways through this. Be strong, just keep swimming.?

    437. Dianne

I stumbled across your Instagram one day during quarantine, and you’ve been a bright spot each day! I was so excited to learn to crochet when I saw your tutorial for the dishcloths, but then my sister-in-law died suddenly at the end of April, and we’ve spent our days helping my in-laws pack up her apartment and sort through all her legal and financial issues. Hopefully one day I’ll make some dishcloths that I can share!

It’s because of the walking and building strength. So, yes, I’m very thankful for bossy friends!

      Thanks, Marian!

I am thankful for so very much, am so blessed. I am most thankful for the freedoms we have in this country – even though there is such civil unrest – we still are free to (usually) say what we want, worship the way we feel is right, and are free to be the best we can be. Yes, there will always be inequalities – but we’re getting there – talents, hard work, commitment – there still is hope for each of us to be the person we dream to be!

There are opportunities. No excuses – it is there for us if we reach for our dreams with both hands and a full, appreciative heart. I am most thankful to God in every single moment of every single day.

I’m also thankful for the good police officers that serve and protect us. My husband , son and son in law are those good people. They are just as saddened and outraged as most people are. God bless.

I am thankful for all the first responders and essential workers who have selflessly given so much during this pandemic. I am also grateful for the many acts of kindness that have occurred. In these trying times it is good to see the best of humanity. Thank you for your practice of happy mail.

I am thankful for having the privilege of being raised by a mother and father who loved each other. They were married 65 years before he died. Now my husband and I have been married for almost 42 years. We are enjoying watching our son and his wife raise their two daughters. Life doesn’t get much better.

I am thankful that my husband and I will be celebrating 28 years of marriage on Saturday. I’m also thankful for the small town where we live in Sherman. We are fairly sheltered and that feels nice right now.

I am thankful that as a programmer I was able to work from home. I turned my quilt room into my office. I guess spending so much time down here i realized it really needed to be updated. It was blah for the room where I make the quilts that make me so happy. I am ready for my final layer of paint and it has specks of glitter in it. So as inconvenient as this time may be. It has also made me look around and really see the things I take for granted every day, Thanks for the patterns another thing on my bucket list.

I am thankful that my husband and I are celebrating 48 years of marriage today.

I was laid off from my job due to the coronavirus – have spent every day since March 19 enjoying my home, my cats and dogs and my garden – my husband is disabled and my dad who lives with us in 90 so I have had to be very careful. My grandchildren ages 4 and 7 live next door on our land so I haven’t missed a moment with them. I know how lucky I am when I hear about new grandparents unable to see their grand babies. My daughter and her husband live in Florida and I am looking forward to the day when we can be together again. We have our health and life is good.

    636. Marilyn

I’m thankful for my spectacular family, thankful for my home which survived California’s worst wildfire in 2018, thankful for the resiliency of my small town as it struggles to rebuild and thankful for the optimism that we share as we look forward to a healthier future for the community, country and world. Tough times make tough people as long as it’s tempered with love and tolerance.

I am so thankful for my faith. Without God to hold on to, it would be impossible to survive during this stressful time in our world. With health issues and financial problems and not getting to see our children and grandchildren for many months, I just try to remember that God can handle it all. Thank you for sharing your blog with us.

Marian, I am thankful that my preemie granddaughter was discharged from the NICU to her first time parents in stable health the night before the turmoil began in their Chicago neighborhood. Together, the new family will find strength and security in one another.

I am thankful for my family and the life we have. Life has not always been easy, My husband and I and our daughter were in a a car wreck 25 years ago that changed our lives. My husband could never work again and thankfully I had a good job in health care. God has been with us every step of the way. We now have two grown children and 2 grandchildren that are the joy in our life, I pray for peace in our troubled times.

I am thankful for each new day I get to be here on earth! I have learned to appreciate my new home, and have been most productive with enriching projects. This time at home has allowed me to be more productive in terms of balancing my few minutes of time between virtual meetings to get things accomplished, like prepping and making the dinner meal in time segments throughout the day and challenging myself to brief time commitments as though I were on a fast paced cooking show with only 7-8 min to get cutting veggies accomplished for a soup base. I went to my container garden and brought in fresh basil to make freezer tray pesto in 8 min! I laughed the whole time! I am thankful for all that I can accomplish while at home. I know God has my back, and I can be successful in finding my happiness. Finding your version of happiness and staying in the moment is what I am thankful for every day. Take care of you!

I am thankful that the virus is on a downturn worldwide. I am thankful that no one I knew or loved was stricken with it.
I am thankful for all essential works and bang my pots at 7pm along with 100’s of others on my street in New York City. I am thankful for my friends and families who Loved me and kept my spirits up when I was having bouts of deep depression these last few months.
      I know I am loved

I’m thankful for the health of my family and friends and I’m thankful that Distance Learning is almost over. It’s been a tough learning curve instructing Kindergarten and First Grade students over a computer but I’m happy that we got through it together. I still miss them so much and am hopeful to see them in the Fall in person.

    658. Cassandra E

Without sounding cliche` I am thankful for you. I’ve been busier than normal, and not as able to interact with people, not just in person but even on line. But I know there’s going to be something that feels a little like fellowship in my inbox every few days at least.
I am also thankful for so many other things. This SIP has not been difficult for me at all as life was already quite challenging. Sip has almost allowed me to slow down a little. And for that, I am actually grateful!

    659. Trudy Boyd

I am thankful for so many blessings that God has provided for me and my family. There are too many to list but I would like to include you. In the evenings, after a long day, I enjoy reading several little blogs to lighten the day. Your posts are at the top of my list. My sweet sister tried her best to teach me, the left handed one in the family, to crochet many years ago. Unfortunately, it just did not click for me but the time we spent together was priceless. I cherish those memories. Thank you for a bright spot in my days.

I am so thankful for my gardens, the birds chirping, the cool night breezes, my health that is improving, my sweet husband, my wonderful kids and grandkids, books to read, podcasts to listen to, my faith, time to savor life in retirement…the world is tough for so many right now, so I count my blessings and try to figure out what to do to help others. Sometimes its just the little things, like a handmade dishcloth made by a kind and generous person…

I am thankful that God is in control. I am also thankful for quiet, peaceful time at home w/a loving husband in these uncertain times. I retired (after working for 46 years as RN) the month before the pandemic began.
