When I was organizing my decorating book collection on the new bookshelf in my office, something struck me.  Most of the books were written by people who I now consider friends and professional acquaintances.  When I was first joining decorating book clubs 18+ years ago to start and grow a collection, I never would’ve guessed that.   And today, I am celebrating adding another book written by a friend to my shelf.  Melissa Michaels of The Inspired Room is launching her new book, Dwelling, this week.

In full transparency, I haven’t had a chance to read it from cover to cover, but I took some time and hopped around to each chapter to do some skimming and quick reading.  What I love about this book is I was able to do that and still walk away with some encouragement and great ideas.

What I also like about this book is it focuses on what the home is all about.  Your home and the stuff that’s in it is there to serve you, your family, and, by extension, your guests.  If it’s not doing that, if it’s frustrating and stressful, it’s not serving its purpose.

Your home is not there to get likes on Instagram or to be magazine-worthy.  It’s not there to show off how much you have or don’t have.  It’s not simply a place to protect you from the elements.

It should serve you and, as Melissa puts it, it should nurture and inspire you and your family.

As her books always do, this one had me looking at my own house and thinking through my approach to certain rooms.

It’s obvious to me to make the studio a place that nurtures and inspires.  It has to be conducive to creativity or it wouldn’t be a very good studio.

But what about other rooms in the house?  I confess that sometimes I make choices based on what will look good or be photogenic or just what is my personal preference and I’m not necessarily looking at the big picture of wellness in our home and how each room can help or hinder that.

And what about the boy’s rooms?  I haven’t even gotten around to painting them, yet, and it seems like a low priority when trash and dirty clothes are left all over the floor.  Would they even care if the walls were painted? I think that’s the wrong question.  The right one might be, Would painting the walls make their room a place that nurtures and inspires them?

Maybe it would inspire them to put the trash and clothes in their proper place at least.  Kidding, but I’m thinking I should make painting their rooms a summer project.

I bet Dwelling will have you thinking about your own home and ways you can design it to nurture and inspire your family.

In order to celebrate this book launch, Melissa is offering up a copy of the book along with some home and self-care products she loves.  Details on the giveaway and how to enter are below.

Good luck!

If you find the paint color that motivates boys to clean their rooms, please post it!

      • Lisa P

Ha! That colour would become a bestseller for sure!

      • Kathi Mundigler

When my brothers were young my mom painted their room a shade of blue/gray that she dubbed “Greasy Gray” – the perfect color for grubby little boys!

    2. Francesca gunn

I love the thought that if we put some time and energy into a space it will motivate us to take better care of it. I may “borrow” that idea and put it in my Dwell Well notebook .

      • JoAnn Lener

I would love to read this book, then see what I might need to change in my own home!

    3. Gail

Looking forward to any suggestions on how to make my home a calmer place!

    4. Elsbeth

This looks like a good read for me. I am a widow now and I need to downsize and re-evaluate what I want and need in a home.

    5. Anna

I am always looking for inspiration for reevaluating how I use my home. This sounds interesting.

    6. Sally Christiansen

I want to update my home !

    7. Doreen

I can’t wait to read this book. The Inspired Room and Miss Mustard Seed are two of my favorite blogs. Beautiful posts!

    8. Ginag

I think scent is an area of my home that I often overlook (problematic with 2 dogs). I think concentrating on the scent of my home would do a lot. I’m trying to be more intentional about what and when I’m diffusing essential oils as a start.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Oh, that’s such a good point! I’m big on things smelling nice, but I really didn’t think about it in this context.

    9. Mary in VA

I keep my home clutter free. For some reason, clutter causes me anxiety, I guess I’m sort of OCD but honestly, if no one is using an object, why keep it? If it gets in my way and frustrates me, why keep it. My BFF calls me a minimalist. And while I do love her heavily decorated home, I simply can’t live like that. So keeping my house clutter free, a place for everything and everything in its place, gives me peace and a home I’m proud to invite guests to.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Clutter and messes cause me anxiety, too! I have gotten much better over the years with not forcing that expectation on my family, though. I do my best, but I know there are some things I need to let go.

    10. Hannah Rooney

This sounds like a great book! Thanks for sharing and cheering on your friends and colleagues.

    11. Sheila Hull

By organizing and being content with what I am accomplishing

      • Jennifer Rogers

I use Method all purpose cleaner, the French lavender scent to clean.
I also make a point of making subtle changes in decor throughout my home to highlight the change in seasons. This is appreciated by my family and it is such a good feeling for me as well.
I also use candid photos of my kids in my decor. Our home is defitely us!

    12. Sherry B

I’d love to create a space to encourage me to move more, eat better and find joy in simplicity.

    13. Helena Dias

      Thank you for sharing

    14. Kris

I crave light and sunshine! I’m sure this giveaway book has plenty of great inspirations to help me add more light to our home.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

Yes! One of the things on my wishlist for this home was good natural light and we have it! This home was situated perfectly to take advantage of the southern light.

    15. Jen

I love both of your blogs and your homes. The blogs are both inviting and your homes are both beautiful yet cozy.

    16. Amber T.

I try to make sure I get enough sleep every night.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

That’s so true! Our bedrooms have to be conducive to rest and sleep. If a room is too bright or cluttered or too quiet or too noisy…all of that can prevent that atmosphere.

    17. Debbie w

I look to instagram and blogs for inspiration then try to pull things that i already own to achieve the look…or something similar! Usually works for me!

    18. Sue

Looking forward to reading her new book, sounds very inspiring.

    19. Elizabeth

      This looks great! Thank you

    20. Carrie Purkis

Looks like a very fun, inspiring book. The rooms I enjoy spending time in are the ones which I have put a little more time into painting, and keeping clutter free.

    21. Becca

I’ve enjoyed the other books she’s written. This sounds like another potential favorite.

Something I realized after reading yesterday’s post…the colors in your home/paint line remind me of Beatrix Potter’s water color choices in her books. I think that’s why I gravitate to those colors and why I ought to use more of those colors in my own home. They are calming and inspirational to me.

    22. Connie Hoffman

Marian, A beautiful blog and I love all your painted furniture. I can’t wait to find a few pieces of furniture with beautiful lines and details and turn them into something special.

Cant wait to read the book!

    23. Natalie

      Love this concept! Thank you!

    24. Debra

      Fluffy pillows and cozy throws.

    25. Holly Binns

When I take the tool the time to work with my 11 yo daughter to update her room, I found that she was motivated to keep it cleaner. Don’t get me wrong – she’s still a kid and can make a mess with the best of them. But it gave her more ownership of and investment in “her” space. And we’ve been clearing out and donating so much stuff that we didn’t love like decorative items i bought because they were on sale ten years ago. Yikes. Now we are much more intentional about what comes into our home and it is becoming a space we love as a result.

    26. Marsha Monroe

Looks like lots of good information to think about for wellness of your home and family.

    27. Anna

Please let me say again, I love how you married that hutch with the base chest in your studio. It was a stroke of genius!!! Then, the lamps added to each end—-

    28. Victoria G

I didn’t even realize she had a new book coming out. Would love to win! I strive for function over form…but I’m still guilty of hoping that form will look pretty in the occasional IG photo too.

    29. Diane

I enjoy both you blogs. Looking forward to reading the new book.

    30. Debbie Hibbert

Wow, such a great giveaway! Thank you!

    31. SaraJane Herrboldt

Amazing! Love the thought of the home becoming a sanctuary.

    32. Heidi

Living in a doer upper I have had to look past so much. After 12 years of chaos I made a decision in January to have a last big push and start properly ‘living’ in this house before it’s time to move. I want to feel happy that be home and that’s been missing for so long

Most of the big work done now to clear and refine then breathe

    33. Lisa

I believe boys, or at least my son, is immune to the chaos that is his room. Maybe that’s what inspires him?

    34. Donna M

I think we all deserve an area in our homes that we can claim for our very own. It might be a cozy little reading nook or a favorite chair in the garden, just a little retreat for weary days.

    35. Jill McDowell

I’d love to be able to look at my home in a new light. The clutter is getting in my way and bringing me down. This book looks like it would inspire me to do something about it.

    36. Tara N.

We strive for this everyday in our house with 2 kids and all their stuff. It’s a challenge!

    37. PJ

Melissa’s philosophy of loving your home is inspiring to me. I loved her previous book and look forward to reading this one.

    38. Cindy

I’ve always felt that your home should be a place that inspires you and brings you peace. You should feel like it is wrapping it’s arms around you when you walk in the door or in a room. It should make you smile.

    39. Lori Biesecker

Peace at home comes when we live in balance: there is enough for comfort and not so much that it feels confining to be there, each family member’s needs and desires are honored to the extent that it is practicable, and the house facilitates the flow of everyday life as expressed by the people who live together there.

    40. Liz

We just downsized last year into a new home and I have tried to become more intentional in the decor and cut out some of the “visual noise” we had at the other larger home. It has made my mind clearer and an easier place to keep organized.

    41. Mary

Wow! Love the ideas, now if I could finally incorporate them into my home, I would be ecstatic! Seems that I am busier than ever, even though the children are grown. Love both your blogs!

    42. Janis Raines

I love a clutter-free home and function better when things are in their place. I would love the gift pack.

    43. Lisa T.

Thank you for the opportunity! I work every day to make our home a place of love and light. Organization, decluttering and cleaning are my keys. This is perfect. Thank you.

    44. Alison S

I am trying to balance a job, my family, and my dad’s recent diagnosis of cancer. Any peace I can create in my home would be helpful!

    45. Pamela Johnson

I would love to read Dwelling. Having a home that is peaceful and inviting to all who enter is key to me.

    46. kathleen kaliszewski

need new ideas for my home

    47. Debi Maerz

We are in the process of searching for a ‘downsized’ home and preparing to move Would like my new home to be very thoughtful of this new stage in our lives, but inviting for family gatherings

    48. Cathy

I can not wait to read this book!! I’m trying hard to make my house more warm and inviting.

    49. Lisa

As an introverted homeschool mom, I definitely appreciate the loveliness of being a homebody – although not everyone considers this a good thing in this busy-obsessed world today. With an elementary aged boy and middle school aged girl, it’s rarely quiet and peaceful in our home, but I love (almost) every minute of it, and strive to make our home a place of love and learning, too!

    50. Karen U

Now that my kids are adults (at college and still home) I’m actually hoping that soon down the road, we’ll be able to downsize our living space and upsized our property. For now, I just want our spaces to feel relaxed, relaxing, and welcoming!. As well as easy to care for!

    51. Angie

So excited about this book! I have lots of big projects around the home I’d like to get to, but finding the time is complicated. ? I’m trying to focus on the simple, daily things that make the home feel welcoming and special.

    52. April Cheatham

Looks like my kind of book! I am trying to keep our furniture pieces minimal and functional while we are renting and building our forever home.

    53. Julie Williams

Love what you said in regards to your boys’ rooms! Painting it may give them the desire to keep it cleaner! Hope it works!

    54. Maureen C

Looks like an awesome book. I am in the middle of a huge remodel but continue to try to make decisions based on how it will function as well as how it will look.

    55. Rebekah Waggoner

Sounds like a book that would be helpful in making decorating decisions at every stage!

    56. Marianne Barta

Way too much stuff in house! Will do some decluttering this year in every room. thank you

    57. Lori Pederson

Sounds like a wonderful book. Thank you for the opportunity to be gifted a copy.

    58. Janae

Looks like a wonderful worthwhile read!

    59. Cat

Managing the mess/dirt created by two wonderful, lovable, big dogs is top on my list – they shed like crazy & drag so much in from the outside. A black short haired puppy & an off white couch are not a good mix! Add to that a backyard with no grass that’s full of FL sand, not pretty!
I also need to get a handle on pictures & crafting items. So many prints from past trips are just sitting in bags & the guest closet is full of “supplies.” That closet stresses me out!

    60. Kelly Benson

I’ve really been thinking lately about how I want our home to serve our family. I really like this frame of reference instead of focusing on what “looks” good. This summer I want to work with each of my kids and ask them that question – how do they want their room to serve them? That will hopefully give us a starting point for making changes that will last!

    61. Louise

Home as sanctuary. Now that’s a thought I love.

    62. Melissa

I’m in the process of remodeling my home and I’m struggling with the decor portion of it – because I want it to feel like me and not like I’m trying to copy every other “farmhouse” or neutral home on the internet.

    63. Monica

Less time at work, or should I say purging and organizing my piano studio would give me more time to spend with my family. Putting all of the books and paperwork/games away that I use is very helpful in bringing peace of mind. I travel to some lessons and bring materials with me. Encouragement would be so welcome!

    64. Kathryn K

i love keeping my rooms simple and clean

    65. Ann D.

Piles….Dealing with all the piles would make my home more peaceful. That’s where I’m starting.

    66. Tracie

I love the idea of this book – and I like your thoughts about you boys’ rooms – it is hard to want to put the time and effort in it if you think they won’t appreciate it – a good reminder for us all. thank you

    67. Tracie

oops, typo on my email on the 1st comment, I think

    68. Lelia Logan

I like this idea of organizing your home to help you enjoy it more. Thank for the info about this great book. Can’t wait to read it.

    69. Melissa S

      Can’t wait to read it!

    70. Laura B

We’ve been very busy over the past few years, and have just started saying no to some great things so we can focus on family and home. I’ve found I’m just as busy doing that – but it’s affecting us in better ways. So managing my time better is making my home more peaceful, and getting rid of the junk that has piled up during the time I didn’t manage it well! There’s so much left to do.

My four kids are smart and creative (not biased, of course! lol!), and we have a lot of “stuff” to support that – so many books, art supplies, electronics supplies, sewing supplies, cooking supplies. A peaceful home to me is a place we can access our project materials and create/learn without unneeded clutter to get in the way. And welcome others into our home to do the same.

    71. Amanda

Your blog inspires me! The book looks good, thanks for the giveaway ?

    72. Kylie McIntosh

I have really enjoyed following you on Instagram and now your blog! I had a friend tell me I had to look at this blog called Clean Mama yesterday since we are both new mommas trying to find natural cleaning solutions for our homes and the first post of hers I read had you in it too! Small world! ? I love your art and your studio. I hope my artwork is half as good as yours some day and that I could have a studio like yours!

    73. Cheri Dietzman

I’m thinking about and planning a re-make of a few rooms so this book will be very helpful!

    74. Kellie

We have been in our home for over 20 years & it is definitely ready for a makeover. I am currently working on organizing and removing clutter. Then plan to paint walls and refresh decor.

    75. patti pawlowski

Oh I just so love books like this! After being a homemaker for 20! years already I need new inspiration from time to time to keep my home looking and functioning it’s best.

    76. Terry A.

I need to work on working through the things that belong to our girls, and help them make decisions on what to keep and what to donate. We are storing way too much stuff in our empty nest.

    77. Sheila

I’ve been trying to make our home a healthier place by showing more love, making more nourishing meals, and decluttering! This sounds like a book that would inspire me on the journey of trying to make home a great place to be- thanks for the review/giveaway!

    78. Lisa

      Looks like a great book!

    79. Jenny Yagow

This sounds like a fantastic book- I’m excited to check it out! I love your thoughts on your boys rooms… makes me want to work on my kids’ rooms as well! ❤️

    80. Patrice Burchett

      I’m purging and decluttering….it’s suffocating!

    81. Home

Hi Marian, I would love to read this book, I want to start making my life easier and simplifying my life and home. I am enjoying seeing all the wonderful things you are doing to your home.

    82. Beth

I am a stager, so I am always looking for inspiration!

    83. Tami

I still need to combine my garage stuff with my husband’s garage stuff. We’ve been married over two years now!

    84. Margie Pieracci

My biggest issue is always organization in a really small home-736 square feet!. I look forward to any and all suggestions. My kids refer to it as Snow White’s cottage, although I don’t have the seven dwarfs to help me!

    85. Heather Braun

I love the peace and tranquility of my home but do still need to down size more. This book would be a great read!

    86. Anne Marie

I love to simply life by decluttering and organizing – my hobbies!!! This book sounds great.

    87. Shelly

I love her books ! What a blessing it would be to win! Looks like a good learning tool!
      Thank you!

    88. Sherri Gonyier

Spring Cleaning, organizing, touch up painting! It definitely make my house more inviting to me!

    89. Kristie

I like the mindset of looking at your rooms to see if they are serving our families and guests. Great perspective!

    90. Kari Cox

I’d love to read her new book, and then walk around my home and see what I could improve on. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

    91. Diane Ruebel

As my husband and I consider a move to an apartment in an retirement village, it is heartening to anticipate ideas to make our new home tastefully simple.

    92. Karen

Far too often I let life get in the way of making our home inspiring and I used to be an interior designer!

    93. Robin

I leave this comment with paintbrush between my teeth! As a business owner, wife and mother it is important to care for yourself as well. Sometimes a little paint or dirt under my nails is all I need to “get out of my own head” and decompress. Making a home is the greatest blessing!
This book sounds like a great way to make my home a peaceful and happy place!

    94. Kristen Polcyn

I’m about to move into a house that desperately needs to be updated and redecorated…but we will not have the money to do anything but painting at first. At first I was discouraged, because making a house feel like a home is so important to me. But now I’m excited and ready to step up to the challenge. I’m praying for a creative passion for this job!

    95. Susan

I am so happy that soon, I will be able to open windows to let in fresh air. I have two porches which my kitties love so they too are looking forward to the warmth of the coming seasons.

    96. Katherine

If the calming and soothing colors Melissa uses for the artwork in her book are an indication, the content must be an inspiration

    97. Eileen

I packed away some of my treasures; I have too many, but I love them all. So I decided to rotate them as well as reduce the amount as I view each one and decide, “does it bring joy”, “is it functional, but not necessarily joyous” or “is this something that someone else might enjoy?”. I’ve been giving a lot of things away and that is a joy in itself. I don’t mean the closest charity although I do that, but some special item that a friend might enjoy It makes for a more thoughtful process, deliberate and conscious choice.

    98. Karen Valenti

Sounds like a really good book!

    99. Dee

Looking to create a more peaceful, inspired space! Thank you for the opportunity.

    100. Crystal

I like your thoughts on painting the boys rooms! I need to think about spaces that way I think rather than essentially the reverse. Thanks!

    101. Helen

      I need this inspiration !

    102. AMY KOMACK

      Thank you for sharing.

    103. Colleen

      This is a great giveaway!

    104. Paige Green

We are about to move and I like the idea of designing rooms that nurture our family. I have to say I’m better at doing this in my childrens’ room than I do my own. I just kind of throw my clothes all over the place and pretend like the mess doesn’t bother me because no one but family sees it….

    105. Anne

I look forward to reading this new book. I love the word intentional. As I contemplate a new project or purchase, does it fit my goal to create a warm, inviting home? Making my kids’ rooms warm, inviting, and functional for them was a way that I showed my love for them…just like showing up for all of the sporting events, etc. They had a priority in my life and they knew it. (And no, they still didn’t keep their rooms clean ? but they got the message LOL)

      • Teri Eastman

I am looking forward to reading this book!

    106. Michelle McInnis

Thank you for this opportunity. I cannot wait to read the book!

    107. Faerie

Would love this! Thank you for thinking of us.

    108. Jamie

I would love to have this book to help inspire me to make my home to be more aligned with my vision that will nourish by body and soul.

    109. Cathy

I love rethinking of how our home nourishes us and can help us live a healthier life! I need a bit of help!

    110. kim

The book looks very inspiring. I need to order it! Thanks for sharing the post!

    111. Lisa

I’ve been selling or getting rid of things that we don’t use or don’t serve a purpose in our house for the last 6 months. That has helped me have more of a sense of peace in our home. I’ve recently read your book and love, love, love, where you write: “Don’t allow a fear of falling to let you miss out on all the things you might enjoy. Yes, you might fall. Or you just might discover a hidden talent.” Reading that helped me to jump in to new projects that I’ve been putting off this week. 🙂

    112. Connie in GA

Wow! Do I need this book! “…kick out the junk, live with greater simplicity…” is speaking to me. I really want to do this but need a big push. As always Marian, thanks for your inspiration.

    113. Margo

The word dwelling has such broad connotations, both a noun and a verb, it depicts both our surroundings and the art of pondering upon something. What better name for a book about finding inspiration in our homes. The books sounds like a lot more than a book about decorating!

    114. Patty Soriano

I am in the process of changing my home. It needs to be what I want it to be. And for so long, it has not. This is a beautiful, bountiful giveaway, and I am so appreciative for the chance. Thank you, Melissa and Marian

    115. Cheryl W

As empty nesters, we’ve been on a mission to purge and simplify our home. This book would be very helpful in getting us closer to the finish line.

    116. Betty Bashaw

I love the concept of this book. Our home should shelter, encourage, motivate, and serve our families. Thank you for offering this book to us!

      • Mary

I have two of her previous books and would enjoy having this one too!

    117. Kathy

I love your home and your style!

    118. Melissa

At a time when the world seems to be moving so fast and furious, an evaluation of our home would most likely help ground us all.

    119. Rebecca M

      I would love this book!

    120. Krista

What an interesting looking collection of fun items! I would read the book from cover to cover! Thanks for the chance to win.

    121. Charlotte Delaire-Meyers

My craft room definitely needs some inspiration.

    122. Pam

The empty nest…to every season there’s a purpose. I love to hear others talk of the joy and the struggle as we find our new place in the world. But it really is a season to enjoy just dwelling at home a bit more.

    123. Dee Parker

I do feel like my home is cluttered. I’d like to pare down to necessities and a few things that I just love.

    124. logan wilhelm

Our focus changes as we get older, would like to incorporate some changes into my home. Need more comfort, ease of keeping clean and orderly. Sounds like there would be some good ideas for my family!

    125. Jolene

I would like to create spaces that feel restful and cozy…spaces (even small ones) that speak peace to my soul. In fact, I would love for my whole house to be a place of peace to those who reside in it and those who visit it briefly or long term.

    126. Kim

I love the idea of living intentionally in our homes. To not live by the “rules” but to live in our homes in a manner that suits our unique families. It is easy to loose sight of that intentionality when life gets busy and hectic. A book like this is a sweet reminder to sick with it and make our individual houses homes that fit our needs.

    127. Darla Thomas

In the past few years, I usually TOTALLY and COMPLETELY agree with you on everything, so if you say it’s great, I would LOVE to curl up with it and let my mind soak up some inspiration for my home. Thank you!

    128. Doris K. Kuhn

Four years after moving from a custom designed home to a one bedroom apartment, attached to my son’s home, still making choices of what I really need and what I can let go. Could use some new perspectives.

    129. Cindy

I’d like to get rid of the clutter and have a less is more attitude.

    130. Nancy Dempsey

Less clutter would bring so much peace and calm to my life, and I’m working on it!
      It’s hard but so freeing.
Thanks for sharing your home with us.

    131. Ingrid

It’s tough sorting through and disposing of sentimental belongings. However, the mind is restful when the surroundings are uncluttered.

    132. Buffie Wixon

This book looks intriguing! Creating peace in my home is very important to me. I feel like home should nourish you, physically, emotionally, spiritually and creatively. It’s lovely to meet like minded friends.

    133. Judy

      Clutter is stressful !

    134. Rebecca Sargent

Definitely need this. Ten years after my husband passed away, my daughter and I were discussing making time and space for me now, not me then or some dream or fantasy in the future. This is along the same line.

    135. Kathy

We currently are downsizing due to empty nesters. I am homebound due to illness. I want to make my new home my “sanctuary”, a place that is warm and inviting. I can use all the advise possible. Love your blog.

    136. Jeanne Bell

I love your home and the love that shows thru. That is the goal I want for my family, to always have a place of refuge.

    137. Sharon Dobbs

So many of the comments are similar to mine. Empty nester, been decluttering a lifetime of “stuff”. I would love to read this book.

    138. Michele Gaydos

really enjoy reading your posts! love your studio!

    139. Diane Schneider

This looks just like the inspiration that I need!

    140. Susan

I try to live mindfully, which seems to give me a peaceful life. Healthy choices lead to good health !0

    141. Pamela

The heck with the book, as soon as I clapped eyes on that 20-drawer chest with the glass cabinet on top I became so enamored with it I can’t think of anything else. WHAT A TREASURE. Oh my! I would almost give my front teeth to make a find like that. I’m curious, I’m going to make a guess the two parts were not originally combined, they were not built to be paired together. That’s just a guest but there is something about the two that seem to each be their own individual unit. But it doesn’t matter, it’s PERFECT together. The things I can store in that. WOW……..I would love to know what sort of retail business or office or shop that lower cabinet was originally created for. That’s all I can think about now, that cabinet pair. Dang gone you, for years now I’m going to be watching for one or both of these pieces and won’t be content until I can find something along this line. It is just exactly the sort of thing I like. You do have the best luck at times finding the treasures you do. But I have to admit, I can’t quite figure out what the piece to the left was originally used for. Is it sort sort of easel? It’s interesting, but my true love is the cabinet. Sometimes, I’m better off not seeing things I fall in love with, it just drives me nuts, especially when its not something I can just go get if I want like a little accessory from IKEA.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

This piece was originally two pieces. The bottom half was from a hardware store in Maryland and the top half was from the Wilder School in Minnesota! They work together perfectly, though.

    142. Kathleen

I love reading decor books they are such a nice compliment to all the blogs I follow.

    143. Alexandria Smiley

Thank you for sharing Melissa’s new book.

    144. JeanFB

What a lovely package of goodies, and the book sounds so interesting! I’m currently trying to go through two spaces – my art room (which has up until now functioned more as a craft room, but which I would like to be more conducive to fine arts) and the attic – finally going through all those old boxes that haven’t been touched in years, and clearing out the clutter. Both of these things will hopefully clear my mind of clutter, too!

    145. Janet

Looks like a book worth reading and learning from.

    146. L Bordelon

I am in dire need of simplifying my home. My mother-in-law passed away a few years ago and a lot of her things ended up in my house. It is so hard to pare down what we want to keep and what should go. I need inspiration!

    147. Addie

I would love to win the book and take an afternoon to sit back and enjoy it!!! All the giveaway gifts look great!!!

    148. Beth

I can’t wait to read this book. I need to get better at taking time to pause. My mind lately has a non-stop to-do list and I need to slow things down.

    151. Johnna Throm

Just FYI…I’ve tried the links in the above post many times and different ways. They aren’t working and shows that I have “0 entries” in the “giveaway “. Let me know if there is a new opportunity to enter please.

    155. Mimi Matthews

I love the concept behind her book! Thanks for sharing.

    156. Rachel Hanson

Over the years, my home has become more and more cluttered with “stuff.” I’m in the process of trying to decide what actually works in our little house, and what doesn’t. This sounds like a great book!

    157. Kandra Stukenborg

Sounds like a great philosophy. I grow weary of the tendency I see on social media to make the home a showplace just to impress others. Thank you for the giveaway.

    158. Janna Solis

I could really use some inspiration! I went back to work 2 1/2 years ago after being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years and now my house as turned upside down.

    159. Amanda Pennington

I’d love to be encouraged in helping to shape our home to best serve those there and entering! There are so many goodies in the giveaway I’ve been itching to try as well.

    160. Lila

Trying so hard to declutter all the rooms in my house plus the large garage. The kids are launched so now is definitely the time. I’m craving simplicity and airiness in my home but, for me, it’s so hard getting rid of so muc that brings back so many memories of the “young” years. This books looks lovely and inspiring.

    161. Nora

I have been praying for a book to inspire me during a time when
life has been very difficult. God knows. He will provide.
Thank you for your lovely giveaway. I know it will go to the person
      who needs it most. <3

    162. Deborah Raney

Great giveaway. I think the thing that would create the most peace for my family right now would be to downsize our belongings. We’re not hoarders, but we do have a lot of things and I’m learning that the fewer things we have, the more we appreciate what we do have.

    163. Marty

      Fantastic giveaway!

    164. Jeanne

Creating a room that nurtures and inspires…now that truly is inspiring. And a wonderful giveaway too. Thanks.

    165. MaryAnne Hergert

Thanks for the give-away. I love all the pretty things. Blue is my color.

Your ideas and decorating styles always inspires me.

    167. Phyllis Henry

I know that I need to simplify the things I keep in my home in order to give myself a calmer space.

    168. Cathy Zuehlke

About a year ago I embarked on a mission to declutter our home from top to bottom. (It is still a work in progress!) It would be wonderful to read a book that inspires me to then think about my home in a new way, as a place to nurture my family.

    169. Jeanne

The book looks beautiful and I’d like it to be the start of my own design book collection!

    170. BeverlyO

Right now my target area is the kitchen. I am working to update it bit by bit. What we are tackling right now are DIY projects like adding a book case to the island and finishing it off with beadboard, trim, new paint color, and new counter top. Next will be adding to the cabinets to take them to the ceiling – a much bigger project that won’t be DIY! We will also replace the double oven with a microwave/oven combo and adding new counter tops there. Our inheritance of an antique lazy Susan table and chairs prompted all the new changes. Now other pieces we inherited will prompt us to do a bit of cleaning out and giving away. We have lived with some of these treasures for a year and now we know how we want to edit. I had to clean out quickly to make room for some of these things and while I don’t regret the changes, I do wish I had taken more time to decide on a few of them! One can live with lots of things for a year but we now know we don’t want this to be a part of our forever home.

    171. Tomena Reed

This is beautiful. I love being intentional in decor, but I need inspiration. Hopefully this book can help me with that.

    172. Ginger Marshall

I started buying junk for resale about 6 years ago, I started by purchasing stuff I liked & moved to stuff I thought I would fix up & could make money on. But life is much busier than I anticipated. I have sold lots of stuff at a couple of Junk shows but they have been few & far between. Now the junk is literally taking over my home, my garage, my once beautiful & relaxing huge patio, the guest room & family room not to mention the living room & dining room…. I’m getting to the point that I have little energy to upcycle the stuff I had planned, let alone haul it all to a show & set it up. I need to have a clearance sale & reclaim my home! The first quote your shared from the book inspires me. It’s Spring & time to clean it all out!

    173. Sue

The cover alone is inspiring. It’s a beautiful book. I would love to have it!

    174. Lynn Osborne

My home is slowly getting to a place that it really suits me. Part of that is eliminating all the “stuff” that doesn’t suit me! Would love to win the book and other goodies!

    181. Yvetta

I’m working on clearing out the clutter to make my dwelling more functional and relaxing. We’ve lived here longer than we’ve lived anywhere, 20 years! This is almost overwhelming!

    182. Sandy Ross

I am working on organization of paperwork esp. financial, so my husband and I don’t waste time looking for things, trying to remember on-line passwords, etc.

    183. Patti

My husband recently retired and I went back to work. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can simplify, make our home more comfortable, and easier to care for. This book sounds like one to help me process the changes that need to be made.

    184. BetsyJ

    185. Linda A Charlton

This post made me think. I choose items based on what I like and can afford. Some of these items, mostly the ones I chose based on affordability, do not serve me in reference to happiness and enjoyment. I wish I could just choose what I love.

    186. Erin P

You and The Inspired Room combined are an explosion of drool-worthy inspiration! ? Thanks for the opportunity!

    187. E.S.

With my children getting older I feel the need to re-examine how we use our house and I feel the desire to work on our home. Not a full redecoration, just some extra attention.

    199. Mary

Its time to simplify and weed out what no longer works, to promote peace and spark inspiration. This book could be the catalyst to happily ever after!!

      • Joy

Im currently in my favorite spot of my home: corner of my couch, feet up on the ottaman, opposite of my balcony looking out watching how wind moves the branches. This book would make the perfect compliment for this spot! <3

    204. Kiersten

My struggle with creating a space that nurtures and inspires my family is that we are in a tiny apartment that just frustrates the heck out of me. We moved into it last August after our cross-country move and I sit on the couch staring at everything and don’t know what to do to make it work better for my family or make I feel more like a cozy gone that serves my family well. I am loving working through Melissa’s book and hoping it will help change my attitude towards our current home.

    205. Lynn C

I’m looking forward to reading this book-so far I’ve only done a very quick flip through. I do want our home to be a place that my family enjoys being in, a safe place where they can be themselves, relax and be at home.

    206. Kris

My husband and I bought a home six months ago and he passed away three weeks ago after 22 years of marriage. I always decorated with his “manliness” in mind and was fine with putting small splashes of my personality here and there. Being inspired to create my new future is not easy but necessary for my own contentment. I want to live intentionally and would love to have a kick-start with these products. Who knows, maybe I’ll find my inner creativity again!

    207. Susan P

Would love to read this book! Getting ready to purchase a new home. Thank you.

    208. Rhonda

I like the ‘dwell well’ philosophy. I moved into a 600 SF cabin on 5 acres and have eliminated so much unneeded stuff. I now have all the things I love and that give me joy. I also spend more time doing what I enjoy-being outdoors, growing lavender and a garden. Cut back on work and have no debt. In the winter it is so cozy and peaceful. I am enjoying the dwell well philosophy. The book sounds right up my ………country road.

    209. Karen

I’m always struggling to find balance at beautiful and what is practical

    210. Elizabeth

I’m always trying to instill peace in my home. Sounds like a great book to read.

      • Laurel

I’m looking to discover how to create the home that works for me and my dogs at this stage in my life (empty nester) so it feels like a home even though it’s no longer populated with so many people.

    211. Cindy Knighten

I’d love to read this book since Marion thinks we all should!

    212. Sandra Marshall

I would love to read this new book . The giveaway has a lot of great things that I would love to win that would inspire me to work on my home environment.

    213. Jane

Dwelling sounds like just what I need to read. As empty nesters we are refreshing our home but want it to still be a place the kids want to come home to.

    214. Sandra

Simplicity is definitely what I strive for. Thank you for sharing.

    215. Dorene B.

I received my copy of the book this week and am loving it so far. It is what I needed at this stage in my life and I am looking forward to using her suggestions to create a serene home that offers comfort from the many stresses in life and a welcoming environment to family and friends.

    216. PJ

I love Melissa’s philosophy of making our homes nurturing spaces and loving our homes even if they are not perfect.

    217. Denise

I can’t wait to read this book. I am definitely a homebody and love being home but sometimes become overwhelmed with all I need to do to keep it clean and tidy. Hope this helps.

    218. sue

with my recent injury i have come to the realization my home needs to be my sanctuary. with 6 animals it can be chaotic at times and the de-cluttering can not include pet toys dang it…. with my daughter of 27 moving back in with us in June my guest room is top priority but since she will bring her “stuff” with her not much other than fresh paint is needed and maybe a mirror and new floor. LOL it never ends does it???

    219. Theresa

I would love to read this book.

    220. Kerry

      Love this book!

    221. Mel

We’ve spent the past 18 months remodeling an old house to use as a business. As a result, our home has been at the bottom of the priority list, and it shows. It’s time to finish the half-painted rooms and declutter the stuff that has accumulated in that time.

    222. Ashleigh Hall

After struggling for years to find peace and balance, I have come to realize the closer my relationship is with Christ, the easier that peace and balance is to find!

    223. Sue Anderson

What a lovely way to explain how to make a home, not just live in a house. Yours is a very inspiring group. Thank you!

    224. Pam Rychener

I have her first book and it is beautiful. Your home should be a safe and peaceful place for all who enter.

    225. Christy

It looks like a great book. We are looking to downsize and move permanently to our lake house. The book would be helpful.

    226. Jeanne Boardman

I am working on paring down and getting rid of the visual clutter

    227. Jeni

How would I create more health and peace? Tough question because I’m anywhere but there right now. The best, most obvious answer is to rest in Christ. I have to work harder on that.

    228. Bonnie Peterson

Looking to simplify our home so I can have peace from clutter and less cleaning!

    229. Lyn Wooley

I know that there is too much clutter in our house, and it affects the way we feel. I’m also learning that stuff that I love, will not necessarily be the things my children will want one day. I want to be more thoughtful about what we actually need in our home to make us all happy!!!

    230. tracy kerr

Thanks for sharing this book with us. I need some focused direction concerning my home.

    231. Annette

    232. vicki wright

Would love to read her book and get some ideas on being more intentional when decorating my home.

    233. Anu

    234. Shar

    235. Janet

I am so looking forward to reading this book! Thanks for sharing!

    236. Laura F

I would create more health and peace in my life by clearing clutter in the house and in the cupboards….better choices in my food choices….and more thoughtfullness in my purchases for my home, and getting rid of items but not memories

    237. Mary Koenig

      Hi,
Inspired to create a healthy environment in my home.

    238. Christina

About 3 months ago, I moved into my first house. I tend to look at Instagram and Pinterest too much and do things that others do instead of doing things that make my house a home for me. I am happy with my choices but I want to try to be more intentional about picking things that are what I like and not what is popular. Also, I still have stuff to unpack and put away. I want to work on getting it done. It’ll give me more peace knowing it’s done.

    239. Lynne Wingard

Ordered the book and am looking forward to reading it.

    240. Christi Williams

I need to live my life with more intention, focusing on self-care but also making my home a place to feel peace and joy.

    241. Nancy

I am in the process of de-cluttering and the book will inspire me to simplify our home. Thank you for the offer.

    242. Debbie Keith

What a wonderful idea for a book! Even the title itself is intriguing. 🙂

    243. Wendy Drake

Currently my husband and I are doing some updating on our home. The reason being is that we want to down size and create a home that is simpler so that we can enjoy the upcoming seasons in our lives. We will soo. Be empty nesters and look forward to enjoying each other and a simpler life without so much upkeep. This book sounds so inspiring.

    244. Amanda Whitley

i would love to start by making my home feel more peaceful and relaxing

    245. Karolyn Love

This is the Spring when I’m going to declutter a set of cabinets with items I don’t even know I have!!! Making my “Dwelling” feel even more peaceful and uncomplicated is my goal and getting rid of these hidden items has been on my mind for a long time…time to “git-er-done”!! This book, whether I win it or not, is one that I definitely will purchase and pass along to my daughters for their homes/lives!! Thank you, thank you for this opportunity!!!

    246. Judy Westmoreland

Looking forward to reading the book since my husband and I are in the process of looking for a home.

    247. sharon

I am working on cleaning out and paring down. More inspiration is always needed!

    248. Jenn Anderson

I agree that our homes should serve us. What good is it to have furniture that we don’t use so that it “stays nice” or just “looks pretty?” The home is for the family for sure. This sounds like a good book.

    249. Susan

I want to read this. I am beginning a new season in my life as I just lost my husband. I am entering into a whole new phase of life with no husband or children at home. I can begin to think of how I will dwell in my home alone. Thank you for the opportunity.
      Susan

    250. Rebecca Jones

Oh what a delightful topic!! Who among us wouldn’t want to warm up the welcoming of our homes? Thanks for the giveaway!!

    252. Candace Thurman

I have had multiple family deaths in the past 3 years and have new stuff. I need to go through everything and prioritize to simplify my life. It is making me overwhelmed and I don’t know where anything is….

    253. Danna Garcia

LIfe is so hectic and we are all pulled in a thousand directions. I’m working towards serenity and simplicity in my house! I want it to be a place where the family wants to spend time together relaxing. I’m excited about reading this book!!

    254. Deborah Wire

A perfect addition to my own inspired home!

    255. Kelly

I need to work on making things in my home easier.

I need to have my children help me more. When I read about clothes and garbage on the floor. Ugh. My kids are older and don’t do that, but I don’t have them clean up. I am not doing them any favors for their future. Years ago children were taught how to do everything by watching their parents. My children are busy in sports and they don’t see what I am doing

    256. Paula J

I live design books – this one looks amazing!

    257. Mary

We have just married off the last of our six children and are trying to clear out years and years of everyone’s collections. Some of them take their stuff willingly and others like to store it where its always been! We are trying to make our house less stressful with our own collections too and I am loving the freedom it brings. This book seems like it is directly in line with my thoughts!

It is so important to me that friends and friends-to-be who come to my home immediately feel comfortable. I want them to feel like they can make themselves a cup of coffee or grab that pretty throw on the sofa and throw it across their legs if they’re chilly. I used to think I had to have everything completely done before others could come over, but am now realizing how important it is to just embrace the journey and invite others along. I love the idea of dwelling and am reminded mostly of Phil. 4:8 where we are reminded to let our minds dwell on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, excellent and praiseworthy. That’s a great place to start!

A well-planned room arrangement is something that brings peace to my life. Although, with little kids I’ve learned it’s also helpful to let go of instagram and Pinterest-worthy interior aspirations! The book sounds amazing

I truly need to get rid of excess in my home. I work full time and have a senior this year. Seems there is no time to get everything done. It would be easier to keep things cleaned and picked up with less clutter. This is my goal for the next few months.

Our homes should be a grounding refuge from the earliest age. A secure place where we can grow, create, share, and love so when we do go out into the world we can be a positive influence. Having this refuge, however humble restores us for the next day. Thanks for your inspiring blog!

    277. Kathleen Rettig

As a military family ourselves, every home requires reassessing how we will dwell here. Especially as I share this home with 4 teenage boys and my husband. I thought toddlers were hard on furniture!
