cottage bed update

I finished the twin cottage bed today and I had so much fun styling it to shoot.

Let me back up, though.

We painted it in two coats of a custom mix of Kitchen Scale and Boxwood from the MMS Milk Paint line.  After the second coat, the milk paint started chipping in certain places.  It pulled up the pale pink paint as well, exposing the wood underneath.  I don’t think I could’ve planned it better!  Milk paint is always full of happy accidents.  (Well, most of the time!)

Since some of the paint was so loose, we vacuumed it off and then distressed with 120 grit sand paper.  I mostly hit the chipping areas and lightly distressed the edges.

Because it was chippy, we finished it off with a coat of Tough Coat, which is a great sealer.

I made a quick Facebook live post, showing how I brush it on and talking through some of the benefits of using Tough Coat on a project like this…

Jeff was hanging out in the studio for a few hours today, so he helped me assemble the bed.  I used a twin mattress I already had (it’s always been in a full, waterproof cover) and a new, folding 4″ boxspring I bought off of Amazon.
Jeff and Sebastian had to test it out.

I bought a new padded, waterproof mattress cover for it, so we put that on and then added the antique bedding.  I’ll show the full reveal soon, but here is a sneak peek…

Until next time…

Marian, you are godsent! A few days ago I bought a sweet vintage bedframe and looked up your blog archives for a low profile platform that you recommended. I was concerned about the assembly, because the base was basically a pallet. Yet today you post this new source, which requires no assembly. Thank you so much for sharing.
Your bed looks so sweet and serene.

The bed looks so pretty now but nothing can top the picture of Jeff and Sebastian. And just when I am ready to repurpose my chenille bedspead I am inspired by your picture to tuck it in and top it with a quilt – endless inspiration from your blog!

Oh my gosh I LOVE IT!!!! Love love love it!! You’re a genius. I was just painting something in kitchen scale the other day and used bonding agent. And then several big sections flaked off just on one side. Oh milk paint. Never a dull moment.

So cute! Good luck at Lucketts this year it sounds so exciting at the new venue. No more flooded parking lot wading. The new venue looks at lot like the Country Living Fair sites I’ve been to in Atlanta and Nashville. Jennifer Taylorsville, KY

Your portraits are really beautiful, they remind me of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books a bit/maybe the artist then used the same medium!
