bed crown take two?

Years ago, back when my blog was just a wee little thing, I made a bed crown for our master bedroom.  I wanted to make our cheap mattress on a metal frame look more important and high-end.  And, it doubled as camouflage for a doorway that made arranging furniture in the room awkward.

And here it was…

This is sort of like looking at an old year book photo!

This was before blog beauty shots had to be beautiful and when revealing a finished project with fabric wrapped around pillows and wrinkled bedding was completely okay.   And this was my phase when I decided to forsake blue and give aqua a try.  Which didn’t last very long, so the bed crown, that I pestered Jeff to hang and I was so elated over, soon became something I wanted out of my house.

Memories of that fickleness hang around me as I am even considering…even daring to utter the words bed crown.

But, it just might suit this house and this master bedroom…

…and this Frenchy bed frame…

…and this toile linen fabric and pale blue/gray walls.

And my sewing skills have improved leaps and bounds, so I think I could make something that looks more sophisticated.  Maybe something along these lines…

But, the head board on our new bed frame is tall and it might not leave enough room for the fabric to drape without looking wedged in there.

I’ll be painting the bedroom walls tomorrow and we’ll go from there.  I have plenty to keep me busy without adding a bed crown to the list, but it’s a thought.

The bed frame was delivered today and it is beautiful!  It will work with the wall color I picked, so I will be in paint clothes tomorrow, roller in hand, if you need me for anything.

In other news, I ventured out to a new-to-me antique store today while I was running errands and I definitely found one of my spots!  I bought an old table for the studio, an antique pine dresser, and some cool smalls.  I even found a couple pieces of ironstone!  Between painting, cleaning, wrapping presents, etc., I’ll share my finds and the bed in the next couple of days.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

I can’t wrap my brain around the fact that you are organized enough to tackle painting your master bedroom four days before Christmas! I am impressed. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Marian! I’m looking forward to seeing all of your room transformations in 2018.

      • monica

Yes, I was wondering about that too!

    2. Linda

I think the bed crown with your beautiful toile linen fabric would look so beautiful with your new bed frame! Can’t wait to see the room all completed. Amazing how much you accomplish in a day!

    3. tina

No to a crown. I think it would just be too “foo-foo” and something else to keep clean, etc. Sometimes less is more. Let the bed and fabric stand on their own. Just my 2 cents worth1

      • DBLori

I’m with you, although I was thinking it’d be more along the lines of “frou-frou.” 🙂

        • Sue K

I’m with the no-bed-crown crrew as well. Seems a bit over the top and may push you into a more formal look that doesn’t seem to read MMS to me either.

    4. Betsy

Isn’t it funny how our tastes change. We look back on things we loved at the time but then it’s time for them to go. I guess that’s what life is about, constant change. I can’t wait to see the end results. Merry Christmas!

    5. Karen Chaudoin

I liked what you said, “This was before blog beauty shots had to be beautiful and when revealing a finished project with fabric wrapped around pillows and wrinkled bedding was completely okay.” Our lives are filled too much with perfection or striving for what is presented as perfection in photos, news, social media, and magazines. Sooo…I can say that keeping it simple will always work and be calming. Enjoying your story and keeping it real.

    6. Sarah

Bed crowns look lovely but be sure that it is something you can take down easily and dust/wash or vacuum (as a former hanger of fabric above the bed myself, and suffered sprinkles of dust eventually). Love the fabric and new bed!

    7. Teresa R.

I say no the the bed crown too. I think a fabric wall would be a better decision with that beautiful toile. From your pictures (and it could just be the angle) your ceiling doesn’t look high enough to support the bed crown and I think it would take away from the awesome new bed frame. But I’m sure whatever you decide will look wonderful, can’t wait to see the finished result!

      • Kimberly

^What she said.^ Get the room painted and the bed installed and the bedding all set up first. Live with it for a while. You can always add a bed crown later if you decide to go in that direction. I love bed crowns; the one in your inspo pic is lovely yet is attached to a very tall wall so it works for them. There may not be enough room for a bed crown in your situation seeing as your the headboard on your (gorgeous!) new bed is rather high.

I agree that fabric on the wall would look be beautiful, depending on how you’re going to use that lovely bird fabric. If you’re going to make a new duvet cover out of it, that’d be too much bird toile in that part of the room. If you’re going to use it for accents/decorative pillows, then yes, the bird toile on the wall would work. Can’t wait to see what the final result is, you always do such lovely work!

    8. Cheryl

Happy Holidays! I agree with the others regarding the fabric bed crown. However, you might be able to use a vintage looking one made from antigued gold leaves and sheer fabric. I have seen this with beds like yours with lower ceilings and it looks great. Just a thought ?

    9. LadyB

Don’t you think bed crowns are a bit dated? They remind me of ruched blinds and frilly dust ruffles! A throwback to the 80s. You can do better and more stylish than that.

    10. Susanna

I’m so sad! You moved to Rochester not long after I moved out! Anyway, there’s this little shop in Chatfield on Main Street whose name escapes me. Google, come to my aid… oh they’re called adorn! I think they even sell your paint line. And have you tried Saver’s? Thrifty but nice. A little overwhelming, but so many good finds!

      • Marian Parsons

Yes! I went to Adourn last month to do a milk paint demo. It’s a beautiful shop and a cute, little town.

I just learned about Saver’s yesterday. I was in Collin’s Feed & Seed and another shopper said I needed to go there. I’ll check it out after Christmas.

    11. Terrie Schmidt

I would say no to the bed crown. They look a bit dated, and at this stage look more at ease in a little girls room.

    12. Patricia

Maybe the crown is better in the guest room where your queen size bed will be .

    13. Marlene Stephenson

I certainly would never assume to be as good at decorating as you but, make sure it doesn’t take away the beauty of the bed. Can’t wait to see your bedroom freshly painted and your new bed.

    14. Roberta

The fabric is beautiful. But it is hard to imagine what you have in mind based on thee images. I am thinking something simpler with clean lines would have more staying power.

    15. Lucy

I think it would look lovely without the crown. Too much fabric just to collect dust. Clean and simple is the way I would go.

    16. Pamela

i’m all in on a bed crown, especially when there is some sort of interesting wooden top (dont know whatcha call it!) . have tried to work them into a client space several times and above the bed art can be difficult since it is such a focal point.i’ve been giving it a think since we moved in this summer and find this idea VERY appealing to consider. the more amazing thing is that you are actually painting the weekend before Christmas!! Mercy.

    17. Renee Metzler

I have always loved bed crowns similar to your new-visionary pic, so I’m excited to see what you will do.

    18. Lana

I’m voting (not that you asked) for no crown. Your beautiful bed is a statement on its own and doesn’t need dressing up.

    19. Carla from Kansas

Did your old bed frame move to the guest room? This french bed is beautiful.

    20. Donna

I agree 100% with Lana!! (Not that you asked!)

    21. Pamela Barnabo

I love your new french bed! Did you purchase it locally? I have been looking for a new upholstered bed and live south of Rochester. I too am going from neutral colors to grey walls. Whatever you chose to do on the wall will be wonderful I am sure. I am not one to follow trends as they are fickle and as the word describes change a little too often. I always say go with what you enjoy. I want my bedroom to evoke a feeling of comfort and relaxation and that interpretation is unique to each of us. Excited to see your finished room as always.
      Pamela B.

    22. sandi

Yup, I agree with those above, no, to the fabric crown. I think of a little girl’s room; too much foo-foo; and all the dust mites that find homes nestled in the folds of the fabric – yuk!
Perhaps play off the bed frame shape with some elegant/casual molding on the walls?, some beautiful art, or metal work? or wallpaper? cool wall lighting?
Of course we know ‘you’ll know when you see it’! Have fun painting…

    23. Elizabeth

You’re very creative to think of a bed crown for your new BR. The picture of the King bed you bought is beautiful. Once it arrives and everything is assembled, you can start draping fabrics to try out different ideas and see what works best. Then the decision will become easier.

Good luck painting the BR. Can’t wait to see photos. When you use your roller on a pole to reach high places, how do you keep from getting sore shoulders?

    24. Maria

I think maybe crown sounds like a bit much especially with your already beautiful bed BUT then again it may just be all the more beautiful once they are paired! Go for it and just see! If it works it’s a bonus, if not, the next thing will come to you! You are so very inspiring!!

    25. Kristin McCullough

We saw a few bed crowns in the inns of Scotland but they gave a very formal, dark and royal feel and I wouldn’t personally want that in my home bedroom where I want to relax. I want air flow and tranquility.

    26. Debra Landy

      Have a wonderful Christmas!

    27. Leslie

Just wondering did you get a Cal-King or An Eastern-King size bed? I think a bed crown is very elegant and stately for a master bedroom, as long as your ceiling height can support it. It would be like surrounding yourself in luxury. Just my 2 cents worth. Looking forward to whatever you decide, it will be marvelous. Wishing you and yours Merry Christmas!!!

    28. Mary in VA

I’m not crushing on the bed crown look, ,but then I’ve never seen it done in that gorgeous fabric you will be working with. You can always try it and then see – it’s not like you’re cutting up the fabric in smaller pieces, so you can always use it for something else if it’s not to your liking as a crown.

    29. JaneS

Oh boy, I love your style but it is so much more casual that a bed crown. Versailles called and they can’t spare one. It has happened to me that I love the idea of a think at some time in my life, and I can’t let it go. I vote to let this go. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    30. Maureen Ryan

Marian, I just want to say “Merry Christmas” to you and your family! Congratulations on a marvelous year of growth and accomplishment! May 2018 be just as wonderful as 2017!

    31. Laura L

I would like to see some sort of board and batten-ish molding with an insert of the beautiful toile behind your bed. No foofy gathers or pleats or drapery, just flat fabric and decorative molding of some kind. With the curvy lines of the bed I think the pictured canopies would be too much!

    32. Joan

No don’t do it. I think a bed crown is to foo foo. I love your blog and your style. Merry Christmas???

    33. Robinleach

Oh, sorry, I’ve never liked a bed crown. They get so dusty, and frou-frou describes the, perfectly for me. And I’ve always thought your style was the opposite of from-frou!

    34. Crystal

NOOOOOOOO.. to the crown. Merry Christmas.

    35. Diane

That bed frame looks like the antique French bed we purchased a while back from ebay! I purchased it because the mint fabric looked exactly like the wall colour in our bedroom, of course I didn’t consider that green and blue in any photographs is going to look completely different in real life and when it arrived although its a beautiful bed the colour was completely wrong. So I decided I would paint it with chalk paint…wished I hadn’t done that…I have painted fabric with chalk paint before with no problems but this fabric went hard and rough…so now I have purchased some coral pink velvet that I think will work perfectly and I am going to do what I should have done in the first place and recover it!

What about going for something smaller rounder maybe? I love the bed frame but then I do love everything vintage French apart from their kitchens!

    36. Bookbabe 49

Am using the same toile for some chairs. Crazy for it. Merry Christmas and happy painting.

    37. Mary S

As long as it isn’t like that picture you put in your blog…. that was hideous! Have you considered a “vertical” mirror over the bed? I have one that isn’st very high and has 3 “panes” of glass and I love it. It is almost the width of the headboard. Just a thought. No matter what you do I know it will look fantastic.

    38. Barb K

Oh, isn’t it fun to play “house?” I love doing up a new place! We have put up another cottage for family and friends ‘overflow’ and am having so much fun just planning and buying for it! But, first the tedious stuff like new flooring, etc. For the first time we are going to try doing our own floors and walls. We have easy access to well-priced toungue and groove pine, which we will flip like our last cottage and we are going to do our first floating floor. This is a manufactured home. That is also a first for us. A waaaay different challenge! I know why you are painting so close to Christmas. You can’t help yourself; hence, it’s not even an issue. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

P.S. I envy your ability to make slipcovers!

    39. Norma Rolader

The fabric is beautiful but not as a bed crown! I know you will come up with an amazing inspiration! Thank you for asking us what we thought … I do thank the material would be beautiful done on a tufted headboard
God bless and wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas

    40. MaryLisa Noyes

I say go for it…Merry Christmas to you and your family! It was a joy meeting you at Luckett’s this year…

    41. Trish

I’ve always wanted a bed crown! i think they are gorgeous. if you feel you have room for one, maybe you could simply swag the sides higher up & closer to the crown – then i won’t look squished. i know whatever you decide – it will look wonderful. Merry Christmas to you & yours!

    42. Annette

I too vote no to bed crown. Seems old and outdated. And heavy feeling. Look forward to seeing the new paint etc

    43. Pat

I had wondered if you had discovered Collin’s Feed and Seed! That place is astounding in what the owners have accumulated. It can be a bit overwhelming unless you know just what you are looking for because it is so well organized. I have also enjoyed shopping their wares at Gold Rush in Oronocco.
Here’s wishing you and your family a wonderful first Christmas in a Minnesota!

    44. Laura MacLellan

I think the bed crown would be cool! There was an awesome one in one of the recent One Room Challenges.

    45. Kathy

While I do think bed crowns are beautiful, all I can think about is the dust that catches in the folds. (I am VERY allergic to dust!) I loved when you did a fabric “wallpaper” in the bedroom. Perhaps it’s time to revive that!! btw, the bed itself is absolutely gorgeous!

    46. Vicki Packham

Not a fan of the bed crowns. I see them in the Parade of Homes sometimes, but only in little girls room and then I don’t even like them. I’ve always loved the simplicity of your style, and that just doesn’t seem it and also seems too feminine for Jeff to want to sleep under. How about a big version of one of your beautiful paintings?

    47. Linda Roberts

In my older age, I look back and find that less is more. Your home is so elegantly simple,
I have to agree with many others ….. no to the bed crown.
      Merry Christmas!

    48. Ame Green

Adding a nice crown molding would be a better way to elevate the look of the room – rooms without crown molding look unfinished to me, it’s a simple addition that improves a room’s appearance immediately

    49. Sandra Boff

If I were to do a crown I would use much lighter/thinner/delicate fabric for the inner lining. You’d still be able to hide the door but would take some of the weight away.

    50. Laurie Thompson

Ugh. Don’t do it. Keep it simple. I personally think the master bedroom should reflect the taste of both the man and the woman, so I stay away from florals, ruffles, lace, etc. I want my husband to feel like it’s his sanctuary too. And I agree with everyone else about the dust. YIKES!

    51. PJ

Good to know that I am not the only one who is painting this weekend! We are snowed in here in the North Country so it seems like a perfect time to paint. Merry Christmas!

    52. Debbie

Please no crown. Your ceilings are too low to pull it off, especially a crown scaled for a king size bed. Why buy a bed with beautiful lines just to overtake it by hanging yards of fabric on top of it? In my opinion, the bed needs no competition—let that gorgeous bed be the star of the room.

    53. Christina

There’s a lot of nos to the bed crown, but I say do it. I know you can make it beautiful!

    54. Sarah

Please, step away from the bed crown!

    55. Barb

The consensus seems to be no crown. I must agree. Your bed is so beautiful, I’d hate to take away from it. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
