best of 2016

The first week in January is usually when I hit the ground running, but I've been in a post-holiday, pre-head-cold funk and have just wanted to curl up under a blanket and ignore the world!  I'm starting to come out of that, though, and it actually helped me a lot to put this post together and see everything that happened over 2016.  It's sometimes easy to get lost in a daunting to-do list or pick  (read more …)

hello 2017

Well, here we are in a new year.  Hello, 2017. As I'm standing here on January 2, looking out over the days ahead, I find myself a little hesitant.  I'm usually ready to plow ahead, but this year is already filled with big things and a lot of unknowns.  This hesitation, thankfully, is balanced with excitement and hopefulness.  The stage is set for 2017 to be the biggest year for Mustard Seed  (read more …)

things have changed…

I've been needing to write this post for a while now, but the words were just never there.  I have felt stuck with my blog for a few weeks, though, and I knew I would feel stuck until I made myself sit down and write. I need to tell you, my readers, that things have changed. Don't worry.  It's all good stuff.  I'm not dropping any bombs, here.  I just need to put it out there, maybe more for  (read more …)

the business brain & the human heart

Before I get into the thick of it, I have to say that you all overwhelm me so often!  The first installment of the Lucketts Leftover Sale went live today and pieces were selling before I could even get everything live on the site.  So, I'm "listening" to what you're "saying" and I need to have more things for sale online on a more regular basis.  That's a part of a grand plan, anyway, but I can  (read more …)

it may look like a ticking stool slipcover…

Remember the stool slipcover I made a few weeks ago out of antique blue & white ticking? Well, this little slipcover that I made in an afternoon has now become a big deal in the history of my business.  It is the first home decor product I designed and made that is being reproduced to sell. I just felt a little jump in my heart. I've been wanting this for a long time, because I learned a  (read more …)

CEO lessons & january goals

Sunday night, I was conflicted.  We had just flown in from our trip to the Vintage Whites Market.  I had been "working" all weekend and I really wanted (and needed) to just spend Monday at, hitting the grocery store, unpacking, etc.  You know the drill.  I own my own business, so I can do that, right? Yes, I could.  But I wasn't going to.  I've declared 2016 as the year I'm  (read more …)

running a creative business | making profit-based decisions

I wrote a post answering a reader's question about how I balance business and the rest of my life.  The short answer is I struggle through it.  Sometimes successfully and sometimes not.  You can read the long answer HERE. I received an e-mail from a fellow creative-business owner and blogger, Cassie from Lovely Weeds, about balancing different aspects of our kind of business.  Here is her  (read more …)

How my business began | part 6 | when it takes off

The last two installments of this series sort of overlapped.  In part 5, I shared about starting this blog.  In part 4, we left off where the consignment store I sold out of was closing their doors. That's where we'll pick up the story. This was the time in my business when it was really scary.  I had become comfortable with what my business had become in two years and I just imagined more of  (read more …)
