favorite Ikea finds

We live about 90 minutes away from an Ikea, so I don't go there often.  Maybe once every three or four years.  On Friday, my mom and I made the trek and spent the day "doing Ikea."  It really is like a theme park.  Wear comfortable shoes, get your map, make your lists, so you don't miss anything.  Make your plans, so you hit lunch at the right time.  It's an event. I went with a pretty sizable  (read more …)

the little things | wooden spoons

I think it's easy to be intentional when making choices about the big things you bring into your home.  The big commitment items like sofas and china hutches and statement pieces.  I don't think it's quite as easy to be intentional about the little things.  Things that are utilitarian and inexpensive. But, if you're going to buy something, anything, even something little, relatively cheap, and  (read more …)

vintage-style barstools

I can't believe that I've had new barstools for months and haven't shared the details until today!  I used to document every tiny change that happened in my house, but now that I work at the studio most of the time, my house is just my house, so I don't take pictures as regularly as I used to.  So, finally...these are the new barstools... A few months after we moved into our house, my mom and I  (read more …)

the evolution of my house | part 4 | the kitchen

And now, it's time to walk through the evolution of my kitchen.  This is part four in a series where I'm showing how each room in my house has evolved over the nine years since we moved in. I have always loved a good before and after, but the truth is that there are usually a lot of steps between those two pictures.  In the case of my house, each room has been years in the making...pieces bought  (read more …)

10 minute decorating | “antique” bread board

I was asked by one of my blog buddies, Laura from Finding Home, to join a "10 minute" challenge each month along with some other awesome bloggers.  I tend to take on projects that are more involved..refinishing, painting, upholstering, etc., so I like the idea of pinning myself down each month to do something simple and quick. The theme for this month is "10 minute craft". As soon as I saw  (read more …)

Christmas decorating | the kitchen

I got out of bed this morning and was ready to do some more Christmas decorating.  I had toyed with the idea of going to the studio and doing some work there, but the kitchen was calling my name.  It needed a bit of cleaning and I really wanted to give it some festive touches.  In typical "Marian-fashion", I got so into what I was doing and didn't want to stop, so breakfast didn't happen until  (read more …)

a fresh way to organize

I've been working on organization for the past year or two, off and on when I have the time.  And I've been getting better and more proficient at decluttering and organizing with every pass.  I started with getting rid of the obvious items.  Then, I took it further and got serious and asked myself why I had certain stuff.  I think I just got used to the things around me, so I didn't even think  (read more …)

Butcher Block Counters

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about my dream for our kitchen.  I wanted to do a little something like this... Now, I fully acknowledged then (and now) that there wasn't a darn thing wrong with that kitchen.  The cabinets were a pretty hickory and the laminate counters were in great condition, the layout is awesome and even the linoleum floors were very nice.  It just wasn't my taste.  I  (read more …)
