using & caring for silver every day

A couple of years ago, I decided I wasn't going to keep my pretty things hidden in cabinets and drawers.  I was going to either use them or let them go.  Since I didn't want to get rid of it, I decided I would use the silver pattern I inherited from my mom, Oma, and both great-grandmothers as our everyday flatware. There are moments when I cringe at how expensive each piece is, but then I  (read more …)

how to clean old bottles

Before I get going, I wanted to let those who have been waiting for hemp sheets know that I just got a shipment in today!  I will list them in the online shop on Thursday, July 14, at 8:00 pm EST along with some other recent finds. I shared on my "favorites lately" list that I've found an affection for old bottles.  I was never really into them before, but all it takes is meeting one bottle  (read more …)

using old quilts every day

I definitely have a thing for old textiles.  I love table linens, fabric, clothing, embroidery, quilts...you name it.  I'm always drawn to the "linen lady's booth" in antique stores.  I like to look through the stacks to see if anything catches my eye.  I'm usually looking for blue and white, of course, nubby linen, pretty monograms, crochet trim...things that will compliment the decor of my home,  (read more …)

the easiest furniture makeover ever

I spotted this piece on craigslist and I knew, despite the missing knob and dry finish, that it was a real gem. Painting is my natural tendency, but this piece spoke to me loud and clear...  I just need a drink!  (Not that kind of drink. Although, I have heard of using vodka to clean stinky furniture, but I've never personally tried that one!) What it needed was hydration. The old finish had  (read more …)

why I use my silver everyday

I've talked about this before, but it's worth talking about again. When I shared pictures of my new drawer organizers, I received a few comments and questions about my flatware.  The most common one was, "Do you really use your silver everyday?" The answer is yes, I really do.  Even with two young boys, I do.  Even with a husband who would be content using plastic picnic ware, I do. It wasn't  (read more …)

farmhouse white ticket & reviving old metal

If you haven't noticed, I am just a little excited about our new MMS Milk Paint color, Farmhouse White.  I've been into white lately, anyway, but I'm just so in love with the tone and coverage of this paint.  It's a winner. Launching the color in the usual way just didn't seem like enough.  I got this idea that it would be fun to offer a "golden ticket" style giveaway as we launch this color.  I  (read more …)

cleaning & sealing chipping antique pieces

Remember that awesome "cubby" I found a few weeks ago?  I spotted it when I was out shopping once, but I passed it up, because it was a little pricey.  I kept thinking about it, though, and decided if it was still there the next time I stopped in, I would buy it. Well, it was still there and I snapped it up.  (It's so funny that I get so excited about buying things I'm just going to turn around  (read more …)

sealing the crusty counter

I shared this crusty counter I bought off Craig's List last week... It is a fabulous piece, but it was shedding paint chips all over the place and it was dirty and had quite a number of cobwebs hanging out in the drawers and corners.  So, if I'm going to make it functional, it needed a good cleaning and needed to be sealed. Many of you ask how I deal with pieces like this, so I thought I would  (read more …)
