Applying Wax to the Rocking Horse – Video Tutorial

Well, we finally got the camera and lights out and started making some video!  We shot this one on waxing last week and short some more today on mixing milk paint and the colors in the MMSMP line.  I can’t even say how nice it is to have someone working the camera and taking care of the editing for me!  Jeff has taken up that role and has been soaking up all he can about using the equipment we have and making quality videos.  We both have a lot we still want to learn, but this is our first video together, so if this is our starting point, we feel like we’re going to get to a pretty good place!

So, the video today is showing how I waxed this rocking horse I painted a couple of weeks ago…

The horse is painted in MMSMP Grain Sack over Trophy with Shutter Gray on the runners and bridle.  I finished the horse off in Furniture Wax, followed by Antiquing Wax.

(If you can’t see this video in the post click HERE to watch it on You Tube.)

Did anyone spot the light on the right side of the camera?  Yeah…I said we’re still learning.  We made sure all of the “gear” was out of the frame when we did the videos today!

More videos and tutorials to come!  I’ve been working a lot on The Mustard Seed Pages and photographing things for my online shop lately, but I’m really looking forward to painting some furniture and working on some sewing projects.  I’m getting that itch…

I realize now, while watching your tutorial, how small your sisal rug is. Nevertheless, I heart it!

  6. Loved the video ,,,your horse and your smoky eyes…Your hubs did a great job! ….I know this question is way off topic and I wouldn’t ask except I just have to ….In a picture of your Christmas table the year before last you have some white milk bottles with a blue and white straw in them…Do you recall where the milk bottles came from …I would love to give them to my niece for her sweet child , like I said I just had to ask I have been thinking about them for the longest time now.

  10. Marian: Wonderful video! Photography was perfect, and you are more professional in your presentation than many “professional” seminars I have gone to. Keep up the good work and bless your family. {{HUGS}} Joy

Great video, Marian! I’m curious about the music…is that you playing the guitar?

That’s actually one of the kids in our youth group. He wrote and played it. :)

Just absolutely loved the video. So helpful and the eye candy of your home was a real treat. Also loved the relaxing guitar accompaniment. Great job !!

  13. Marian – I think your video was extremely well done! You make it all look so easy. I hope you have a great weekend and hope to see you soon!

  14. I really liked this video, also. The light in the room is gorgeous, as are you. I was surprised to see how big the horse is in reality. It is very cool. The tutorial is just what I needed. Thank you and I’ll be putting my order in for the wax.
Marian, I originally got on your site to tell you that I realize how much it must have cost you to set up the Mustard Seed Pages and I can’t even imagine the extra workload load. That was such a beautiful thing to do for us.
Who does something like this for people these days? You are a beautiful person, inside and out. P.S. And your husband, too!

  15. Marion, the video was wonderful. It looked picture perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

  16. Great job, thanks so much. Move that camera around the house we want to see more!!!

  17. Well done. It’s always nice to be able to see the process.

So much more effective to watch a video than to read printed instructions. Thanks for doing these. You did a great job. Thank you very much.

  19. You’re so cute on video! Meaning, you have such a great personal, relatable, vibe. What a dream it must be to have your hubby working along side of you?! You go girl! I look forward to more videos for sure. Are you going to redo the slipcover tutorial for the wing chair by any chance? I’m attempting my first try and I’m studying the videos and using your tutorial from your book for my ottoman. I’m having trouble sandwiching my piping in between pieces. It’s so hard for me to sew it correctly! Any tips? I am a beginning sewer(is that even the right word?:-)only a few pillow cases and simple blinds under my belt. Yay-for the video section of your site!

  20. Wonderful video! and I love the horse!

I just used your wax for the first time and all I can say is WOW!!!

This is the 3ed type of wax I tried and I was just about ready to give up on waxing and go with a wipe on poly because of all the problems I had with the other waxes–BUT your wax is a dream!!! It goes on and wipes off easily–it really is just as easy (for us beginners) as you make it look in the video!

I haven’t used your milk paint yet but that is next on my list –stand by for another gushing report!!

I’m sure that you are happy and proud that you are able to have a successful business and support your family –but I think your real success is in the inspiration, support and help that you offer to so many people. You have changed many lives for the positive–far more than you know.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the great products and for all the inspiration!!

I do like the video, and its nice to see how you applied the dark wax. I was never quite sure how to apply the dark wax. One point of constructive input here. I think the mirror in the video that was reflecting your image was a bit distracting, but all in all it was a great video. ..very professionally done.

I have been looking for a wooden horse like this for a year now. Do you know where I can find one?
