I’m so excited to be a part of the True Value DIY Blog Squad again this year.  One of my “duties” is getting to answer some of your DIY questions in an Ask the Blog Squad session on the True Value Facebook page.  The session starts tomorrow, July 24, 2012.  If you’d like to jump in and ask a question, come on over!

Check the date again…shouldn’t it be July 24, not June 24th? Or maybe you are like me…I am so far behind, it is still June at my house.

Do you have any magical cures for bleed through when painting a piece that was previously stained? I have tried several things and even after a good sanding there are certain pieces that still bleed. My most successful anti-bleed treatment has been light coats of Rustoleum’s Painter’s Touch (2x coverage) primer.

    • Miss Mustard Seed says:

First of all, don’t sand those pieces! The poly finish seals in the stain and when you sand the finish, you expose the stain and it seeps through. If it’s really bad, use a SEALING primer or a coat of poly to seal it.

    Hi, Marian!
I’m anxious to try your milk paint. Do you know where it might be carried in a store in/near Atlanta and when? Or, can it be ordered online?
2nd question/request: If possible I’d love for my neighborhood hardward (Intown Ace Hardware) on Scott Blvd. in Decatur, GA to carry it. They have great stuff — varied, unique things and I think your milk paint would be a big hit.
3rd question: I’d like to paint 2 pieces of furniture — one for a living room that opens into a dining room. I’m thinking they should be the same color. I’d welcome your thoughts.

Thanks so much. Can’t wait for the milk paint.

    OH! I have a question!
I have 4 wood chairs that have been painted black. I would like to paint them a cream or something much lighter. What would you suggest? Would milk paint be a good option?
These chairs are used in my dining room along side other wood, (maple?)dining room chairs.
Do you have a suggestion on a color? Trying to get away from the dark :)
    Looking forward to any suggestion!

I get so frustrated with paint drips…. finding them after they have dried. Am I painting with the paint to thin? And my brush strokes are really showing. Basically, I am not getting a smooth finish. Do you have any suggestions?

I have Pennsylvania House table and 4 Windsor bow back chairs with spindles.. I think they are oak. They are at least 30 years old and in good condition but sure would like to make a change. Think your typewriter paint would work on them?? They do have a poly finish but it isn’t high gloss.
    Suggestions???

I have 2 questions, is ere a “clear” wax that doesn’t leave a yellowish finish. I like the Fiddes and Sons clear, but it makes all my white painted things look yellowish.

Also, what is the best way to “finish” chairs? Waxing and buffing all the spindles of the ones I have seems too much work! Rub on Poly? Thanks!
