I can hardly believe that I have been writing for Cottages & Bungalows magazine for over a year! Wow. It’s been a real honor to write their DIY Essentials column to share everything from how to make no sew drapes to building a simple bird house to building a shelf. In the issue currently on newsstands, I show how to make an “antique” sign using graphite transfer paper. I love any project using paint and this photo shoot was one of my favorites…
If you want to see the tutorial, check out the magazine. I’ll post it on my blog in a few weeks when the magazine is no long available.
I tell you, you never know what is going to happen when you start a blog. I never, ever, EVER thought I would write for a magazine. And I’m still not really over it. I STILL rush to the magazine section, scan for Cottages & Bungalows, flip through the issue to find my article and look at it right there in the store. I’m sure my shopping cart is blocking the aisle, because I’m a little oblivious when I shop. I have to resist the urge to grab a stranger walking by to show them that my name is on the glossy page. Yeah, I’m a dork. It’s been over a year and I’m still a dork.
Anyway, both of my dressers (Typewriter and Lucketts Green) sold at Lucketts, so I’m bringing Flow Blue and Kitchen Scale there on Thursday. I think I’m also going to try to scrounge some other things from around my house. I haven’t been able to shop for WEEKS because of the work that’s come with the milk paint line and sporadic babysitting and VBS and traveling. August looks much better (as far as having a consistent schedule) and I’m looking forward to getting back into a routine of some sort.

Love the sign! Going to try and pick up an issue of Cottages and Bungalows. I love the mental image you painted of yourself in the grocery store with your cart
Congrats on the one-year anniversary. Can’t wait to get the next issue. Love the sign. BTW, are you gonna be able to make the Southern Bloggers Conference in October. Would love to see you again.
Take care.
Marian ~ I am totally going to go find this issue of Cottages and Bungalows!! I am loving loving your sign!!
this is my first issue of C&B – just got it a couple of weeks ago- it’s a great little magazine and I was terribly excited to see YOUR name in there (even though i knew it would be in there. . . cuz i, like, know you and stuff). I can’t even IMAGINE what my reaction would be to seeing my OWN name in a magazine!! ha!

I love this sign. You are such an inspiration.
Great sign Marian. I would be excited too if I were you.I can only imagine the thrill of seeing your name and creations in a national publication. Congrats on your sales they were great pieces.
Guess it’s about time to go and get a copy of the magazine.. I love anything similar and that sign
is too cute ! I have the perfect place for a vintage, aged sign in my kitchen, but since I can’t find
something with just the right colors.. think I will just make one. . . Perfect !
Thanks for the idea.. hoping your schedule evens out.. I know the feeling.
Diana
I hope you tell them that the only reason most of us buy the magazine is because of you. What is it? $8.00 Sometimes I think I’ve seen every country trick in the world. But, Funky Junk”s signs are too complicated for me to figure out, so I;ll take a stab at yours. I just don’t know what to say. I don’t like to label things like “laundry” and I don;t like to tell people to “eat” or ‘dream” Maybe “Think Different” or my husband’s family’s Ship Chandlery – since 1843. That’s a plan. Ann
This came at the perfect time… I was planning on searching for a sign-making tutorial because I have some old cupboard doors and things that would make some great signs!
So happy for you and all of the exciting things happening in your life!
Marian — I hope the thrill never goes away for you!
When your living the crazy you wish you had some sanity…..live is about crazy enjoy……ever anniversary and each every new opportunity ….because you deserve….time to wash my hands of paint…and good luck on your next sale..my subway dresser sold in one week….wish every thing we took to our shops sold so fast….
i knew that there was a name for me, when i made someone look at photos in a magazine… of some of my work. i am glad to be a dork along with you. now that i define it so well.
xow.
I love the sign! I’m positive that if I was ever in a magazine, I would do the same thing, blocking the aisles and all! I love how you share your excitement with us!
You are so funny. I can see you now grabbing a stranger and making them look at your article. I’ve been published Once, and it was not me submitting, but when it happened, I felt the same way, all giddy. You have worked hard and You have what it takes. I enjoy your blog so much. Thank You, Susan
BRAVO!! how fun! and well deserved!! when my signs first appeared in HomeGoods I was rearranging and scaling furniture in the aisle for my “photo shoot”. A girl has got to do what a girl has got to do!
xo ~ kristi
Don’t you have a sign in Target, too? I was looking for it the last itme I was in there.
I do have one sign at Target. It’s my Be Real design. It’s blue with a color bunting flag across the top.
Congratulations on your anniversary with Cottages & Bungalows! I can only imagine the thrill it is to write for a recognized publication like C&B. I love your word picture of you standing in the aisle thumbing through the magazine to find your article. It is only enhanced by the fact that, in my mind, I see you there in full painting-outfit-regalia (bandana included) while blocking the aisle with your cart to peruse the pages.
LOL…yes. I would be totally paint splattered. It’s just the grocery store!
I’m just here again to thank you for sharing so much with all of us. It has meant so much to so many of us. You’re a household name!
I’m just here again to thank you for sharing so much with all of us. It has meant so much to so many of us. You’re a household name! (Bakerella, Pioneer Woman, Miss Mustard Seed, etc.)
The sign is wonderful! I may just have to grab a copy of Cottages and Bungalows now…
Love the sign! i am so happy for you! This is exciting!
I love the sign and all your tips and tricks… Congrats on all your successes!!! My sister and I have been following you for a few years now, we are just a little on the quiet side, but had to let you know how proud we are of you!
My husband is a writer and editor, so he has many contacts who are in the same business. One long-time friend said he was a approached by a woman who complimented his writing and was gushing what a thrill it must be to see your name in print on a by-line. He replied, “Madam, the only thrill I get when I see my name in print is when it follows the words ‘pay to the order of’. ” Free-lance writing is a tough business and the romance soon wears off. I’m proud of my husband’s work, but the paycheck is where it’s at.
your website is great. when is the next post coming on this topic? i’m happy i found this blog.http://www.casaemail.com.br
Great post. Always enjoy your blog. How funny, I realize there are no signs anywhere at my home. Maybe I will think of something and make one or two.
Thanks, Marian. I have begun making a few signs. Fun to do and you continually have taught and inspired me. I picked up the magazine and it is very well done. Again, thank you.
My husband is a wooden boat restorer. Working on a Chris Craft now. I made a sign for him from an old board purchased at a garage sale that says, Great Lakes Boat Livery. It hangs in our patio area. Since we live on the property of our church, many congregants see it and want to know where we ever found that old sign. Nice compliment! Thank you for the instruction…in so many areas. Blessings, Sarah
I knew those dressers wouldn’t last long! p.s. I don’t think it’s weird at all to rush in and search for your article. I know I would. It is just such a concrete way to see that other’s appreciate your work therefore something to be super proud of!! You go girl!
I agree with your conclusions and looking forward to your coming updates. Thanks for sharing
Wow Im so very proud of you and weve never even met!!!l lol I can only imagine the rush your feeling to have accomplished so much and to see all your hard work finally being realized! “your my hero”
Dear MMS, I’m so glad things are selling well at Lucketts. Of course, your furniture is beautiful! I subscribe to C & B magazine and love seeing you in print too. Thanks for your great blog. Hugs, Anne Boykin
My mail is being forwarded and I can only hope my C & B magazine is in the first bunch that we get. I love love love the sign and the hutch and especially the sign and hutch together. Pinning it on my “Country Kitchen” board. Can’t wait for the tutorial.
Do you know if the magazine is available in Australia? Or somewhere online, I would love to check this one out… =)
Hi, this is great, I love it. I decided that I would go ahead and subscribe to the magazine also. I just moved into a craftsman bungalow and this sign is perfect for a space in my kitchen.
This made me laugh out loud. I think it’s fabulous that you are still giddy after a year. If I was in your shoes, my husband would have to tie me up to keep me from posting a framed copy of each month’s article on the outside of my house with a big neon sign reading “As Seen In Cottages and Bungalows”. Maybe it’s a good thing I’m not published. But congrats. What a fun thing!
Marian
I think it’s cute you flip through the mag and look for your article.
That is what makes you do endearing to us all I think. Looking forward
To your chalk paint line coming out. Watched you painting tutorial and
Was blown away by the awesome coverage that piece had.
I also use the same method of transfer when I make my scripture signs. It’s old school ,
But that’s okay with me.
Have you posted the tutorial for the sign yet? I can’t seem to find it. Thank you!
I’m looking for the tutorial for the antique sign…have you posted it yet? Thank you! KB
What a cute sign! I have searched for the tutorial here on your blog, but I can’t find it.
Me either. I have been waiting. Thanks!
Sorry ladies! Yes, I need to post that!!
There is still no link, any chance we can get one? I love the sign!
Sorry! Here it is… http://missmustardseed.com/2012/11/making-an-antique-sign/
