Inside the Armoire

Over the past couple of months I’ve been working on my work office (not to be confused with our home office) for a magazine feature.  It’s been so fun moving things around and adding some pops of color to inject a bit more personality into the space. The art director asked me to move the fabric from my mirrored armoire, which wasn’t being photographed to my French armoire, which was.  Well, the inside was an orangish-yellow pine and I was not going to have that in a magazine.

Here’s the best before picture of the interior I could find.  See…knotty, yellow, orangish, not cute.

So, I went to my paint stash to decide on a color.  Since this was the inside of a piece, I could have a little fun with it.  I decided to use ASCP Antoinette, which is a soft ballet pink.

Since there are inset panels in the doors, I decided to paint those in ASCP Old White to make a feature of the detail.  I did not bother with wax, but simply buffed the paint with a soft cloth to smooth it out a bit.

And I moved my fabric over and made sure it was folded, stacked and color coordinated.

The pink is a little surprise when you open the doors, but it makes sense because there is pink in the rug.

…and with two boys and a husband, there’s just not going to be a lot of opportunity for me to use pink in my house.

I did some more painting today, but only two small pieces and I’ll save the waxing for tomorrow.  I have a lot to do over the next week to get ready to fill my space again at Lucketts, but I need to remember to pace myself.

Before I sign off for the night, I have to say a huge thank you to all of my readers.   Your comments about my TV appearance have been so sweet and encouraging.  It means a lot to know I have so many people cheering me on.  This really is a very special community and I’m honored to have so many amazing friends.  Big hugs and thanks.

  3. I grinned through the entire Nate segment! So very happy for you!

The armoire looks darling, but I also like that yellow European pine! I gravitate toward painted furniture, but I have a couple pine pieces in my home, too and it give a little warmth to the space.

Always enjoy stopping by your blog!

  4. I love that rug too. It is so cool and really like the inside of the cabinet painted a different color. Also, saw your segment on Nate’s show and you were terrific. Your house showed even better than it does on your blog.

  8. Marian,

That armoire is stunning! I love it. I am so inspired by your work. And BTW I have 2 boys too, so I understand the lack of opportunities to use pink. What a great idea to use it for the inside of this piece.

  9. such a beautiful armoire…it is to die for

  10. Your attention to detail, as always, is spot on. The pink is lovely! I got a kick out of how you thought of all your readers being in the audience on Nate. If they weren’t, they are now!! I’ll bet you gained a few. Keep up the good work and be good to yourself.

  11. I LOVE it!!! My dining room curtain fabric is in your armoire :)

  12. The pink touch was brilliant. Perfect for a girl in a world of blue. Love it!! Nate should be commended for having the wisdom to snatch you as a guest for his show. Great move because you did an awesome job and attracted a whole bunch of us who normally don’t get to see his show. Your segment was my favorite of the day. My second favorite was the comment from your youth who thought you were probably on it for some dumb decorating. Classic! :)

  15. I love the pink. It became the inspiration for a vanity with a curvy carved mirror and bench, I picked up at the thrift store today. I can hardly wait for my Antoinette Chalk Paint to arrive. I was so glad I was on Spring break so I got to watch your fabulous presentation on the Nate Show.

  16. Hey girl – I don’t think I’ve ever commented before – sorry, I’ve been using you;)

  21. That armoire is gorgeous! I’ve been meaning to try the Antoinette color. It’s much softer than I thought, so I will have to try it. Your Nate segment was great and I thought you seemed very relaxed. You’re the 3rd blogger I follow to be on Nate. It must be his thing…to promote bloggers. It’s great you’re feeling well enough to do some painting!

  22. Very cute and fun to use the pink inside the armoire! And I agree, much better painted!
I didn’t get a chance to leave a comment about your tv appearance but I did watch it! how wonderful for you – you did a great job! It was fun to see and hear you ‘in person’, makes me feel like I know you a little better now:)

  23. I would LOVE to have a huge armoire like that, and yes, the inside would need to be painted! I love surprises of pink or red in unexpected places.

  24. I love the pink too! I am on the hunt for an affordable armoire that needs a little love. What a great inspiration!

  25. This turned out beautiful. YOu did such a good job with the armoire. I am fortunate to have one where I store all my vintage quilts and I painted the inside that Martha Stewart green. I love it. It is solid white on the outside. If you get the chance come by for a visit and see it. It is definitely my favorite piece of furniture! http://ribbonwoodcottage.blogspot.com/2012/02/aqua-and-white-bathroomk-armoire-and.html

    Beautiful..
I saw several pieces of fabric that I would love to have..LOL
    Happy painting..

  42. How clever of you to find a way to add a little girly-ness to your nest of boys! Sometimes all it takes is the tiniest little pop of a color of good cheer to make us feel joy. And if it is hidden, it feels like it really is just for us.

  43. Your armoire is very pretty, and the AS Antoinette pink is indeed a lovely surprise.

  44. Oh I love the soft Pink inside. It is just barely pink enough to where you don’t think PINK! When you open the door. I see we have some fabric in common too! It looks beautiful stacked up like that. Good for you for being patient with yourself. I am usually starting to go a little unraveled at this point after a surgery. Good luck for Lucketts!

  45. Beautiful Armoire ! Sure wish I could have seen you on the Nate show… any way to see it now?
    Little busy lately.
