French Grain Sack Chair

Unfortunately, I do not have a before picture of this chair.  I bought it last summer off of Craig’s List and never snapped a picture of it.  It had a wood frame and lavender plaid upholstery.  It was in great condition, but it just wasn’t “me”, so I gave it to Ruthie, my upholsterer to let her work her magic.  I also gave her two antique grain sacks to use as the fabric.  I can hardly take credit for how amazing this chair looks.  My contribution was a naked chair frame painted white with some grain sacks and Ruthie did the rest.

I love her choices on the position of the grain sacks.

My *plan* was to sell it, but I am so in love with it that it’s not leaving my house.  Ever.  Well, I guess I shouldn’t say that, because I do often change my mind about furniture.  Well, I’m at least keeping it for a while, but I will do more chairs in this style to sell.

Today, I placed an order for the first round of Miss Mustard Seed t-shirts!  They are going to be a heathered charcoal gray with white writing.  I went with a higher quality, traditional style t-shirt made by Champion.  It has a nice stretch to it and should work well for almost all body types.  They will be $12/each and I am planning to sell them at the Lucketts fair and I will make them available for order online as well.  I need to get my ducks in a row before I can do that, though, so I’m not sitting in my basement packing t-shirts all day!

Love the chair to pieces! I’m also a terrible font junkie – would love to know the name of the font you selected for Miss Mustard Seed on the t-shirt.

I’m not sure. You’d have to ask Reni of Bliss & Tell Branding Company. She designed it.

Good to know I will take a couple of t-shirts but I am so far from Lucketts so I will watch for the on-line sale

  7. This is really beautiful.

I know grain sacks are beyond my budget. However, I DO know how to embroider, and I’m a huge fan of redwork, as well as initials. I can’t help but think that I might enjoy some pillows with redwork initial embroidery on them, made from drop cloths. . . . Thank you for your inspiration! I have been watching your tutorials on slipcovers and I am planning on using them to cover our falling apart couches (we had them custom made several years ago but 6 children who like to mistreat the furniture leads to huge holes. . . .) I’ love the grain-sack look and I’ve been wanting to make some new pillow covers to go with the slipcovers but I didn’t quite know what I wanted before. Now I do!

Oh yes! You can make some beautiful “faux grain sacks” by embroidering on drop cloth. I wish I had the patience for embroidery! Please share how they turn out. :)

  8. I want a chair like that so bad for my reading room! I look high and low to come up with nothing! I love the grainsack cover for it! Love it!

Would you ever consider selling some of your furniture online? I know so many of us would be willing to pay. That chair is a great case in point- I would pay for one in a heartbeat plus shipping across the country!!! Please consider. :) sarah

Yes, I think so. The issue has been shipping. I hate packing stuff to ship. My parents are moving up here and my dad is going to start shipping for me, so I’ll make more things available online.

  10. Could you please tell me what this style of chair is called? High, rounded back, arm rests–I know it’s French as you said, but if I go to a store and ask for one…what do I ask for? :) thanks for sharing your beautiful chair. I saw one like it at a model home furniture sale, but I missed it and have been looking ever since. Yours is really close, so hoping to be able to find one near me soon!
I second the other thoughts about being able to buy your work online, looks like it would be great.
    Thank you for your help!

Love the chair! Have wanted one like this for a loooong time. Will have to start searching. I have been to Lucketts and if anyone hasn’t been, they must try to go—it is true eye candy and so much fun. Thank you for all you do to inspire us.
