When picking up a piece of furniture from one of my clients, they asked if I would paint a few other pieces for them. When I completed and dropped off the first piece (a white side table with a hand painted Delft handle), they showed me a cabinet and this shutter. Cabinet, no problem. You want me to paint the shutter? Really? What a great idea! I love it! It looked cool as it was, but the paint was pealing and left a trail. Definitely not safe to have hanging above a bed and the color wasn’t right for the crisp blue & white style in their weekend home.
As you can see, this shutter needed a lot of cleaning. First, I scraped off all of the loose paint with a paint scraper. I then sanded and brushed the piece. This was very time consuming, but necessary.
I am fortunate enough to have a HVLP paint sprayer (which I use almost everyday), so this was simple for me to paint. If you’re using a brush, it’s going to take a while, but I think it’s worth it or you can use spray paint. I applied a bonding primer, then this gorgeous Sherwin Williams color called Open Seas (SW6500) in a satin finish.
Even with all of the chipping and brushing and sanding, there is still a lot of texture to this shutter. I like that. It says, “I’m old, but I was loved enough to be given a new life.”
And here’s the full view. I can’t wait to show you how it looks in their home. They are planning to hang it vertically above their bed.

This is a neat idea. I found one sort of like the original at an antique store, but passed it up….oops!
It does have a sweet texture!

Lots of prep work on that shutter but the results are beautiful…love the color.

Hi all you bloggers out there. Marian's Aunt Susie here. First of all I must say that Marian you are just plain talented, no getting around that. Please keep up your fine fine work. KD and I might open a shop in Charleston and may want to sell some of your goodies there? if you are interested. Since I am Aunt Susie I have to get in my motherly advice. Please (and I'm sure you already do this) wear a super duper mask when taking paint from old furniture as some may contain lead paint. YIKES!!
